"I was happy for him," offensive tackle Lane Johnson said. "No animosity. He's helped me in my career. He's well-respected around this building. We wish him the best." ... "He's one of my favorite coaches I've played for," veteran tight end Brent Celek said. "He's got a great personality, a great dude, on the field and off the field. I've got a lot of respect for him. If he goes to (the Giants), I wish him a lot of luck except for the two games he plays the Eagles." ... "Every time he's been here," Celek said, "I've always enjoyed my time with him. I think he knows how I feel about him. I'll always wish him luck wherever he's at. He's a friend." ... "Pat was well-loved by everyone in the building," Johnson said. "His knowledge of his game, but as far as his temperament, he knows how to handle a lot of players. And I think he's a very good offensive mind as far as rhythm. He knows how to call a game." |
Boy won't that be refreshing on the Giants!

Assuming he's calling the plays of course.
An inside look at expected Giants coach Pat Shurmur's tenure in Cleveland from Browns insider - ( New Window )
I hear that bro
The best offensive game can be called, but if Spags defenses are giving up a historic amount of yards, points and not getting off the field on 3rd down, it won't matter.

but what about this defense that was arguably pound for pound the bigger disappointment last season?

But if Shurmur is going to be installing a new offense and calling the plays, it's important that the DC have lots of experience and be somewhat of a CEO in his own right. Del Rio fits the description, but I'm not a fan. I'm much more familiar with John Fox, of whom I'm a big fan. With John Fox as DC, you know for a fact the defense is in good hands.
great question! Makes perfect sense to bring back the architect of that hot mess, no? :-)
Still, it worries me that Spags could really stay on as DC
But that article also said he was overwhelmed being a hc and calling plays.
Did the defense play great, no. Keep in mind that OV missed a ton of time early in the season and our only "pass rusher" for most of the early season was JPP, who played terribly this year. Combine that with all of the injuries and the DB issues, and it was a disaster year for the defense.
Spags has has 3 good years and 2 bad years as a Giants DC. If he does come back, and the Giants add another legit pass rusher (and who knows, maybe a capable LB), this defense can get back to a top half unit.
Sure they're professionals, and they "should" be able to overcome that, but quarter after quarter, game after game, week after week... They're human, and our three-and-out offense was brutal.
Fine? Am I remembering incorrectly that against the Eagles, Bucs, and Chargers in weeks 3, 4, and 5, the defense was handed a lead or tie late in the game and lost it (against the Eagles in mind blowing fashion)? To me, the defense was the #1 biggest culprit this season. Yes, the bar was set high the year prior...but those early games weren't really lost by the offense (for better or worse, their output wasn't noticeably different than the year prior).
Even setting aside on field performance, as I've said on other threads recently, I don't know how you bring back the coordinator for a squad that tore itself apart at the seams the way this team did. In fighting. Lack of effort. Kind of a disgrace. I'm sorry, I just don't see how you can lay all of that at Macadoo's feet (especially given his offensive focus) and expect it to be noticably different with another offensive HC.
I think he will be just fine as a HC.

Shurmer left in 2012. Pettine lead the Browns to 7 wins in 2014. I don't see his time with Cle as any kind of success story.
The biggest problems on defense are depth and attitude. I think with a new perspective it can be middle of the road or better.
Offense was horrible and did nothing to help the defense. Defense can't really help the offense (minus turnovers and or scoring themselves) but the offense can help the defense. picking up a few first downs changes field position and rests the defense. If the defense has a drive against (points or no points given up) they were on the field for a number of plays. Having to go right back out there because the O went 3 and out is just draining physically and mentally. It shows up in the 4th quarter. Do that for a number of games and it begins to show up earlier in games and with the number of Defensive players with nagging injuries....

Unfortunately for you, that's probably something that will never be known. Even if Spags, TQ, and Eli all stay this year, who's to say it wasn't his idea. Keep in mind, he worked with Spags on two different teams, so there's probably a lot of respect for each other.
I keep saying this, but for whatever reason, posters seem convinced that Spagnuolo is staying.
I won't like it if he does, but I'm not going to put the cart before the horse here. I'll worry about it when it happens.
This really needs yo be emphasized. I'm not saying this team was ever going to be good, but they would have had a winning record heading into the Broncos game if the defense can hold those leads. Head into the bye week at 4-3 instead of 1-6 and the season might not have been such a disaster.
