NFT: Selling a vintage guitar advice needed...

EricJ : 1/18/2018 1:49 pm
so this may apply to a very small subset of individuals here. I have a 90 year old Martin guitar. Guitar shops of course want to steal it from me. Looking for advice as to where the best place is to sell it. I hear at auctions but I am not connected at all to any of that.

Yes, I can (and have) do a google search but looking for feedback from anyone who has done this before.
I sell my gear on Reverb

depending on the value.. Old doesn't always mean collectible you might consider listing it on Reverb after getting an idea of the value.. Also go to Martin message boards. People sell their gear on there all the time.

Stay away from Guitar Center and Sam Ash unless you are desperate for the cash.

Good Luck!

I'm a saxophone collector, I would use Reverb and Ebay. Reverb you may be able to get more but Ebay has a international market, Ebay has a much larger footprint.

Reverb is good, but I've had the most success selling several acoustics on the Acoustic Guitar Forum (AGF). It's the BBI for Acoustic guitars. You can also try " the unofficial martin guitar forum". I've looked for prewar Martins on there before.

And I might be interested a well. rossww@yahoo.com

Not sure you could sell to an international buyer if it's Brazilian back and sides (I assume most that old ones are) as there are restrictions about shipping these woods out of the US. I'm not sure of the rules, but it's probably not worth the risk.
I have a very good friend who was very close

with Les Paul. Les left him a lot of his guitars. Over the years he has sold some of them I will ask him who he uses. I know he has an excellent connection with Gibson.
What model is the guitar???

You should call Norman's Rare Guitars in LA for info - I bet they would give you a fair quote.

For listing, you might also try Mandolin Café - they have a separate section for guitars for sale, and it's pretty active.

For appraisal and possible sale on consignment - check out Retrofret, in Brooklyn. You can google their website and see what they're about.

check out Retrofrets website and look at the old Martins for sale (there are a bunch) as one metric.
After researching the value,

I sold my '71 Rickenbacker bass to a vintage dealer. I knew what to expect price wise, and I got a price I could accept. I may have been able to sell it higher had I been more aggressive and pursued a direct sale, but in the end, I was saved the hassle and I was satisfied.
