Schwartz: What Pat Shurmur thinks about Eli Manning

gidiefor : Mod : 1/18/2018 8:46 pm
Quote:
Newly hired general manager Dave Gettleman, along with ownership, will ultimately make the call as to Eli Mannings future with the team, but Shurmur made it clear in the first interview he does not view Manning as shot. Shurmur believes there is still life left in Manning, according to the NFL source and sees this as a case of having the best of both worlds, with the selection of a top-rated quarterback in the draft. Shurmur could break in with the Giants with a quality, although aging, Manning while at the same time grooming the next franchise quarterback.

The Spags thing is just frightening

The defense played like shit last year. I don’t know if they’re listenjng to that voice anymore it is very scary that it’s totally acceptable for them to potentially retain him.

That would suck badly.

Interesting that it still isn't clear who the Giants #1 choice was. Doesn't matter now.

I think they are making a big mistake with Spags and his staff.

If they keep Quinn, I will go ballistic.

If Shurmur takes a page from Belichick's book and tells him keep it simple, no elaborate schemes, we may be OK

Based on what? 2 of the 3 seasons he’s been back the Giants have been last in defense. Historically Bad. And three of his players had to be suspended. He has to take some blame for that as well
The players took advantage of Spags....

Yeah, that's not happening, and the team won't cut him this offseason. If your contract at work was guaranteed and your boss told you he wasn't happy with your recent performance, how willing would you be to take a pay cut?

Mc had to own TQ as a rookie HC; could live with him year 2, but likely would have asked for a change id there was a Y3. Shurmur likely saw TQs body of work, has the experience/voice Mc didnt, and will likely ask/demand to pick his own STC. If TQ is kept maybe WE can petition our minority owners to insist TQ be replaced.
Eli needs to lower his contract

if he wants to play a few more years then they need cap relief to get him the offensive line he needs to protect him and also to establish a good running game.
Spags getting blamed for the DRC suspension is not fair.

Considering he gave Shurmur his first shot as an OC, is only a couple of seasons removed from the #2 defense and has the support of Giants brass...I don't see how he has much of a choice. I prefer they go in a different direction, but put yourself in his position.
Sure sounds like

Mara, Shurmur, and Gettleman are in the pro Eli crowd.

The Giants may take a QB number two overall, but I would not be surprised if they trade down if they aren't in love with any of the top 3. Shurmurs ability to work with a variety of QBs and be scheme diverse is a real asset and allows the Giants to consider a wider variety of QB prospects. If they don't love Darnold or Rosen they don't have to take them and they don't have to reach. As long as the Giants come away with the QB they WANT, I'll be happy.

I get the Spags criticism, but give him some LBs and a better DE rotation and I think he is still capable of 2007 and 2008. We often forget how good the Giants linebackers were those two years.

and FFS stay relatively healthy! I’m not on the Spags train any more than most, but I have a hard time killing the coach with what was trotted onto the field at LB and CB for most of the year.

My only issue with Spags was the bad start the defense got to while relatively healthy...looking back I think many of our stars must not made it out of camp with a “clean” health bill...something we may never get to the bottom of.
They’ll be much improved on defense if they can get some kind

Of pass rush. It’s not working with JPP and Vernon together. Or it’s not enough.

prdave73 : 1/19/2018 2:26 am : link
The problem I see happening is if they keep Spags, the defense mostly likely will stay the same. No change to the culture. Now if they go with a new DC there is a good possibility they make changes to the pass rush(Jpp), LB's, schemes, and the whole mindset of this defense. For the amount of money and talent poured into this defense, they have been awful.
I think the main problem on

In 2015, it was terrible. And his Saints and Rams defenses were terrible. Any coach can look good with lots of talent.

Really? If they kept the OL coach would have taken hostages shooting one every 20 min? I would...

Eli's contract is not fully guaranteed, so that analogy doesn't completely work.

tell the story, but I did find it funny regarding the article's comment " but the fact defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has, for now, stayed put is viewed as a sign Shurmur will opt to stick with Spagnuolo"

Or maybe, no one else wants him as a coordinator, so he's just sitting on his couch hoping Shurmur sticks with him. As I recall, he wasn't in much demand before the Giants brought him back, and his second time around has been a mixed bag. If he were not retained, I doubt his phone will be ringing off the hook with DC job offers.

I get the feeling Shurmur has to convince Mara to part ways rather than convince Mara to keep him.

Spags then it should indicate to Giants fans that the team has all the pieces in place to fit the ideal system they want.

OV , JPP , LC , Snacks , Jackrabbit, DRC are all core players while Tomlinson Goodson D. Thompson are guys who could emerge.

I dont anticipate a huge change in the defense and neither does ownership.
Spags is fine
HoustonGiant : 1/19/2018 9:12 am : link
Look at the games. Most points given up were 4th quarter. They were hurt and tired. No "complimentary football" and by the end of the season why bother.

The best defense is a good offense and vice versa.

Agree. Also, why bolt to GB after only a year to coach backers if there’s such a strong indication your boss/DC is going to be retained by Shurmur? Strange.
Spags getting one more year works for me
Torrag : 1/19/2018 10:32 am : link
The HC hung those guys out to dry the last couple of years and they pulled a rabbit out of their ass in 2016 despite the entire load being placed on their shoulders. That type of performance isn't sustainable when exposed to such heavily skewed time of possession. Ranked 29th in TOP both of the last two seasons.
I have no problem with Spags staying.........

the biggest reason is I expect an improved O with PS as the head coach. An improved O will only improve the D. And hopefully a healthy D.

Spags is a good coach, I'm happy with him to stay and I agree with Tom here. People are just mad because it feels like another half measure, but the reality is Spags D was far less responsible than the O for the recent failures of this team.

We had a HISTORICALLY bad offense. And the defense was off this past year, injured, and just plain stupid with bonehead decisions on and off the field.

A new leader in Shurmur, a better offense, and Shurmur's influence on Spags, and I think you see the Giants with a top 10 defense next year with Spags at the helm, easy.
Spags might keep his staff
Reale01 : 1/19/2018 5:17 pm : link
I think the players had issues with some of the secondary coaches. They need new blood there IMO if they keep spags.
I cannot say this strongly enough
LG in NYC : 1/19/2018 6:02 pm : link
Keeping Spags would ruin this off season for me. Half measures killed us 2 years ago... do NOT make the same mistake. He is not a guy people talk about when you think of DC's who have historically made their teams better every where they go.

He has had a couple of good years with the Giants and been terrible the rest of the time. Terrible.
This past season alone should disqualify him.

Please Please Please do not let this happen.
