I would assume DG is more than capable of taking care of the draft for the next few weeks and when Shurmur arrives there's still plenty of time for him to put his stamp on the process.
It's not out of the question that a few minutes of the first interview were devoted to the best option for #2 position.

I'm warming up to the possibility that Shurmur was the choice from the "get-go". (e.g. wholesale departure of the O staff and most of the D staff staying put.)
