how to build a team

Eagle model is exactly the opposite of the Reese model. The Eagles lock up their good players. The giants have a lot of players on one year contracts or the last year of their draft contract. The Eagles emphasize line play. The giants draft lineman and sign free agents but do not get good value.

Eagle Model

You're right. The Eagle model is exactly the opposite of the Reese model.

The Reese model built two Super Bowl championship teams in the last ten years.

The Eagle model has led to zero Super Bowl titles for a franchise that hasn't won an NFL championship since the waning days of the Eisenhower administration, when the league had 12 teams, each playing a 12-game schedule.

The Reese model was a spectacular success.

The Eagle model has been a dismal failure.
Eagles /Giants

In the last 8 years the Eagles have won 12 of 16 games against the Giants. The Eagles are playing football tomorrow. The Giants are playing with their kids. The Eagles will be a tough team to beat for as long as you can project in the NFL (which is not long). That cannot be said about the Giants.

How many Super Bowls would the Eagles have won if they had Eli ?
The DG model in Carolina is the model that

we should be focusing in on now. He’s of the strong belief in strengthening your lines and keeping them that way. It’s the only way you can compete. It’s similar to the Eagles. Reese, for all his failings, actually brought in some pretty damn good players too, but he didn’t bring in the right players at certain positions, namely Oline.
It all starts up front

That hasn't changed since football started.

OL & DL is where you start to build a team.

What good is an all world RB/QB/WR if you cant give your QB more than 2 seconds to make a play or open a hole for your RB.

How good are all world LB's and DE's if you DL cant keep the opposing teams OL off your LBs and give the opposing teams QB all day to throw?
Reese Model did not win
twostepgiants : 1/20/2018 8:49 am : link
I give him more credit than most on here for the titles and think he was an overall success but

His model did not win a Super Bowl.

He didnt draft Eli. He did hire TC. He didnt have the “you cant have enough pass rushers” and he didn’t build the OL.

He contributed a lot more to the 2011 Super Bowl win then 2007 but he didn’t put the main pieces in place. Its a lot easier to plug holes then to build ships.

ZERO Super Bowls.
The eagle's model has never been successful. It leads to a team that wins a lot of games but not championships.
Ask Andy Reid if he would like to win a lot of games or 1 Super Bowl.
Fairly sure there is no "one model" but if there were

the results say go take a good look at the Patriots, Steelers and Packers. And to a lesser extent throw in the Seahawks and the Ravens.

The biggest common demoninators on those teams is arguably the reliable QB play they get, and that they all have very strong coaches.

But I also think they have shown themselves fairly well in how they find starters and stay consistent on the field each year.
Interesting read on how the Jaguars turned it around

Nothing earth shattering
1) Culture change
2) Draft well
3) Use free agency
4)Improve QB play

I think the Giants could do the same. the Jags drafted for defense. The Giants should do the same on offense - draft OG, OT, RB. Go with Eli. Check out linebackers in free agency - a lot out there. Definitely could use a culture change - Gettleman and the new coach should do that. If it's Shurmer that should also help working with Eli. Go Giants - biggest turnaround in NFL history!

The Reese model is the Reese/Accorsi model
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 1/20/2018 10:16 am : link
but the differentiator in the model was Tom Coughlin and the emphasis on physical play of both OL and DL winning the line of scrimmage. Pretty simple.

Such a spectacular success that they just fired a HC after 2 seasons, the team has not had an O line to speak of for 5 years, and the defense was good for one season after spending a fleet of Brinks trucks on Free Agents. Strahan, Osi, Eli, Tuck, Jacobs, all drafted before Reese. I would consider those guys the main reason they won SB 42. He gets credit for SB 46, having drafted Bradshaw, stuck with Cruz, drafted Nicks, and Manningham, but none of those guys stayed with the Giants, or had much success after their rookie contracts. But defend Reese by all means.
The draft can really help you,
Doomster : 1/20/2018 11:20 am : link
if you can get contributions from players after the second round....take a look at all the players we have drafted after the second round, the last 10 years....of all those picked, how many became starters, that were any good?

More often than not, your 1 and 2 picks, may take a season or two, to contribute, so there isn't an instant fix from the draft, unless your name is OBj.........

Many penciled in Engram as the starter at TE, and that he would be another OBj.....others pointed out, that many of the star TE's of today, took awhile to grow into their roles..........Engram proved no different......and hopefully, Double E shows vast improvement this season, especially with the drops....

The Draft may give you one or two players that can contribute right away.....but look at our top two picks of the last 6 seasons......inconsistency, health, and the inability to take that next step have hampered them for the most part....

We need a reversal of fortunes as far as the draft goes......can Gettleman do it? We better hope so....

As I recall this was Coughlin's

plan as well when he got the HC job. OL and DL building first from the inside out. But it got lost along the way after the two SBs.
. . . so are we going to just pretend like the Eagles

weren't a complete dumpster fire just 2 years ago under Chip Kelly?

The Eagles have not done anything special. Credit them for bringing in some well-seasoned coaches and taking the plunge to trade up to get Carson Wentz, but that's about it.

Even with their QB and starting LT injured this season, they've managed to remain as one of the league's most healthy teams the past 2 years. Their D Line is good, their offensive line is just okay - aided by having a future hall of fame player at left tackle and a quarterback mobile enough to extend plays when protection breaks down.

Pretty basic steps to success in today's NFL: 1. stay healthy, 2. get the right QB (mobility helps), 3. get the right coaching staff. There's no "secret formula", and it's easy to imagine a team like the Eagles falling back to the bottom just as quickly as they rose to the top.
Yea well

Wentz is going to have to stick in the pocket now he probably won’t be right for a year mobile shmobile.

You need to make good individual choices. You can’t have success plugging things into simple equation. It’s more miltivariable calculus than linear algebra.
