NFT: Tax filing question

Up to what age can I claim my children as dependents? I'm seeing something about 17 years old when I try Googling the topic. This can't be right, since my 17 year old is still in high school, and still depending on me.

Any insight on this is appreciated.
our accountant allowed us to use that designation

on our 2 college kids, aged 19 & 21.

you should be ok with 17 year old.

however, I am not sure what the actual limit is.

Or if a full time student I believe
Must be under the age of 19.

If a full time student, under age 24.
If disabled, there is no age limit.

Qualifying child

...to claim an exemption for your child, you must be able to answer "yes" to all of the following questions.

Are they related to you? The child can be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, adopted child or an offspring of any of them.

Do they meet the age requirement? Your child must be under age 19 or, if a full-time student, under age 24. There is no age limit if your child is permanently and totally disabled.

Do they live with you? Your child must live with you for more than half the year, but several exceptions apply.
Do you financially support them? Your child may have a job, but that job cannot provide more than half of her support.

Are you the only person claiming them? This requirement commonly applies to children of divorced parents. Here you must use the “tie breaker rules,” which are found in IRS Publication 501.

These rules establish income, parentage and residency requirements for claiming a child.

Thanks a lot for your quick responses.

I also have one more question:

My two oldest children have jobs. They don't have to file returns of they make under $6,350, correct?

They should file returns. They will get a refund. They will not owe money.
Correct-

if they have unearned income (investment income, for example) over $ 1,050 they have to file also. If unearned income for dependent children is over $ 2,100 ("Kiddie Tax"), then Form 8615 has to be filed with the parent(s) 1040 and their income must be taxed at the parent(s) rate.
My kids filed as well, on summer internship income

their returns sort of had a pointer to mine, since I claimed them as dependents. So their returns were somewhat affected by my tax rate, if that makes any sense.

yes

on filing if children are getting a refund.
Do I still claim them as dependents if they file their own?

That seems like I'll get a visit from the IRS.

Thanks for all of your help, guys.

I appreciate it.
They need to make sure and not claim themselves as

dependents when they file their 1040-EZ. The EZ design is a little confusing, so it's relatively easy to make a mistake.

That depends on how they filled out their W-4 when they started the job. You can exempt yourself from withholding if you owed no tax last year and expect not to owe any in the current year. If you did that, there’s no reason to file since there’s no money to be refunded.
When I got my first job my dad taught me how to file

a tax return. Not sure if it would have been better to let him continue to claim me as a dependent, but it was a good learning experience. Understanding taxes is a good lesson to pair with learning fiscal responsibility as a teenager.

17 is the limit for the child tax credit, not dependant status. Though dependant status won't matter after the 2017 return because personal exemptions go away for 2018 in favor of the higher standard deduction.

When they file their own tax returns while on yours as a dependant, they just need to mark the box for "dependant of another".
