Tom Quinn outta here....

Ray_Ray (NYG) : 1/20/2018 10:10 am
Following up initial @josephperson report of mutual interest, source tells @SportingNews that Thomas McGaughey expected to become new @Giants special teams coach. I'm told McGaughey was confident enough about getting the gig that he turned down an ST job elsewhere Per Alex Marvez

You forgot "He has no talent to work with." The Giants give pro bowl ST player Dwayne Harris 17 million and he comes to the Giants and his stats instantly decrease. We have the best LS in terms of making plays down the field. We have had several good ST players on this team during Quinn's tenure yet ST's were never a strength. The only players that seemed to perform well here were Josh Brown and Robbie Gould who were already established NFL kickers.

I don't want to see Rosas released yet. Let's see how he does over the off-season. The Giants need to bring in a proven veteran to compete with him though. Take a look around the league and you will find several kickers who struggled early in their careers only to turn into good kickers. Rosas has a very talented leg and the Giants need a second kicker anyway for training camp.

that things worked out the way they did here during eli's golden years. i wish mara had had the balls to fire reese (or at least ross) once the dearth of talent and lack of viable replacements for aging core players became apparent by 2012-2013. i can understand how he couldn't really feel a need to fire reese or ross so soon after the 2nd superbowl win, though. just a shame that he botched things even further after 2015 in deciding to let coughlin walk but hold on to reese and ross and various other garbage on the coaching staff (i.e., quinn, gilbride jr.)

rosas has a big leg but terrible aim. i can't remember the giants having a worse kicker in my lifetime.. rookie HC who was OC on a losing team for 2 years, trading up to draft a third string QB in the 3rd round, going with a rookie kicker over a proven vet, drafting garbage at OL and insisting on NOT looking for upgrades.. this organization certainly had a curious approach to "win now" mode, with an aging MVP QB..

He texted me before the game that Rosas missed nearly every kick in the pregame warmup.
Then Rosas misses a 33 yard field goal wide Left and we go scoreless.

This team deteriorated in all phases this past year.
At seasons end - this may be the worst Giants team I’ve ever seen.

Change from top to bottom is very much needed.

The final element of this disgraceful season that needs to be purged is Spags. The school argument is pretty irrelevant for a kicker though. And you're completely wrong on the "no competition" thing. There was a very good kicking competition in camp.

What? Show me one other coach who had an extra point, field goal and punt all blocked in the same game? How about making an adjustment after the 1st of those?

I've never seen that happen in any game including High School and he should've been fired that night. He deserved all the criticism thrown his way. It's the big leagues and he got paid to coach. It wasn't Pee Wee football where he volunteered for helping out.

They only signed any kind of competition for Rosas once camp already began, and had only leftover table scraps to choose from. Not exactly a proactive plan. And to retain Rosas after a lousy first year, you'd have to show me some evidence he was ever any good to begin with.

It was Mike Nugent, a veteran kicker, who was perfect in preseason and so was Rosas. The right decision was keeping the younger player with the bigger leg for kickoffs.
Never saw any evidence Rosas had a strong leg
Chris : 1/20/2018 11:56 am : link
Giants were 28th in the league in touchback percentage under Rosas. Early in the season, when the games actually counted, it seemed like they were reluctant to even go to Rosas on any kick of 50+ yeards, his supposed strength. I get that they wanted to go with a younger kicker, but dont agree Rosas is that guy. They should upgrade the position for next season.

The personal attacks on this site towards him have crossed some lines Eric. I don’t question the fact his units have been disappointing most years and he needs to move on as we need to make a change.

That said when he’s been given talent, they’ve performed. By and large a big chunk of the special teams roster has gotten worse the last 5-6 years too. People overlook that when viewing Reese’s draft failures.

If the barometer being applied to Quinn is applied to Spags, Spags not only didn’t deserve to get the interim tag or and interview but deserves a quick firing as well. His units have not only been embarrassing some years but also disgustingly undisciplined. He has shown an inability to adapt when the chips start falling and adjustment have to be made.

No he has not. Giants had some decent years under him. When the Giants brought in proven talent in guys like Weatherford and Feagles our punt game improved significantly and won us field position battles. With Dwayne Harris our punt and kick return yardage grew significantly and we had blocking schemes that were consistent.

Has there been more lapses than not recently? Yep. No doubt. But the problem isn’t just coaching. It’s bad or ineffective talent.

It's funny. Before the season started, I was actually most worried about Rosas (aside from the obvious OL concerns) because I thought this was actually going to be a competitive football team that would be involved in a lot of close games.

It wound up not mattering, but I really wasn't impressed by him at all and think the Giants would be well-served to look elsewhere for a kicker.

Punter too for that matter.

Brad Wing absolutely sucked this year and I'm not sold on him at all.

Weatherford had one good season here when you look at the stats. Wing went from a solid punter to dead last. Dwayne Harris was solid in his first year with the Giants and then in his next two he experienced his career worst numbers.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. We'll see how Quinn's career goes after he leaves here.

Something like this...

Over his entire tenure here
Jay on the Island : 1/20/2018 1:19 pm : link
What special teams player can you say that Quinn developed? How many players blossomed under his tutelage?
Maybe McGaughey
Peppers : 1/20/2018 1:22 pm : link
could lure Graham Gano here.

giving Quinn a pass, and I remember who some of you are. Some of my favorite excuses...

"We had a bad bottom roster and thats where ST guys come from"
"We don't draft well in late rounds"
"His units were up and down over the years"
"Yeah but remember how big STs played during the NFC Champ game in SF"
"How can you blame Quinn because his guys can't (fill in the blank)"
"NFL rules dont allow for enough practice time to focus on Special Teams"

anything I missed?

Apparently Sammo thinks I did miss some...

- Giants had some decent years under him
- When the Giants brought in proven talent in guys like Weatherford and Feagles our punt game improved significantly
- With Dwayne Harris our punt and kick return yardage grew significantly
-The problem isn’t just coaching. It’s bad or ineffective talent

I guess they fund his computer and destroyed all of the blackmail evidence with bleach bit. Thank God. YIPPEEEE!!!
I don't think of special teams as a unit that requires a certain level

of talent. It's more coaching-reliant than how fast or agile your players are. He's done a lot more poor work than good.

Coaching is the difference between needing proven or veteran talent to be effective and being able to develop players. You shouldn't have to spend free agent money just to have any kind of punt return success or have a good gunner on coverage. It also shows in the kicker situation. Why couldn't the coaching staff prepare Matt Dodge? Why are the young kickers who show up in camp getting cut here, then going to other teams and becoming solid players? I'm thinking of Boswell and McManus. And getting your kicks and punts blocked is absolutely preparation and coaching.
Part of me has never understood the Quinn hate
BlackLight : 1/20/2018 1:59 pm : link
It always seemed to me that people always attacked the coaching whenever something got fouled up - no matter what the mistake was, or whether it was really the fault of "coaching" or player execution (if the kicker misses a FG they've made before or a returner muffs a punt they've caught before, then logically, I'm not sure how that's a coaching issue).

That said, I do think it's weird he kept his job as long as he did when so many other coaches over the years got sent on their way.

No point...

in dumping Rosas now. We are 7 1/2 months away from the start of the season. Let's see if a new coordinator can fix what is broken, while bringing in competition for the job earlier than last year.
Any notice who the Panther's replaced McGaughey with?
USAF NYG Fan : 1/20/2018 2:31 pm : link
The Panthers didn't renew McGaughey's contract after the season and he reportedly is being replaced by former Giants linebacker Chase Blackburn, who had been the team's assistant special teams coach for the past two seasons.

something odd about our special teams
mdc1 : 1/20/2018 3:44 pm : link
is they do not make plays or change games(positive manner), only seem to play just a field position game in a low risk manner. The only big plays are NEGATIVE.

Who here thinks DG
Canton : 1/20/2018 3:48 pm : link
told Shurmur he's getting McGaughey? It definitely doesn't sound like Shurmur reached out for this guy on his own since McGaughey is from the Panthers.

Or didn't even tell Shurmur yet and just told McGaughey' to stand pat. You're coming to the Giants once we have our HC.
Anybody
Sammo85 : 1/20/2018 4:04 pm : link
really think Tom Quinn made Brad Wing shank a bunch of kicks or teach Rosas how to miss easy kick after easy kick?

I’m sure Quinn personally instructed Rosas to kick his multiple kickoffs to start games out of bounds!

Both kickers killed this team in numerous games. Most of the blocks and misplays on specials came long after the team was dead with injuries and turmoil. It’s not Tom Quinn’s fault when a player simply cannot block a guy.

It’s called execution. Our players have been terrible at it and gotten worse the last few years. Quinn wasn’t being given much to work with the last few years.
What a relief.
Beezer : 1/20/2018 4:06 pm : link
Quinn being shown the door is as much a sign of real change as anything.

I guess he had no photos of Gettleman.

Or maybe Shurmur has his close guys (coordinators and a couple of assistants) but didn't have a complete staff at the time of his interview? It is one thing to say Gettleman is overstepping his boundary but it is another to let a qualified person go because he could get a job somewhere else. Remember, Marrone wanted a coach. I am pretty sure he interviewed him and told him he wanted to hire him. Then it got to Coughlin and Coughlin said no.

Things like this can be in an issue if there are egos involved but if everybody is following the same shared vision then there is no issue whatsoever. This "hire" was done as Gettleman proving his power. It was done to get the Giants that much closer to being a contender.
This "hire" WASN'T done

Rosas kicks appear to be too low at the line of scrimmage. Either too low a kicker or sets up too close. Either way is that the reason for his distance.

Change coordinators like they change socks. Yet the Giants have kept the same (mediocre at best) special coordinator forever - until now.
The speculation on this board is wild

and entertaining as well. Some think that DG is going around his new HC and hiring and firing his new staff without telling him. Get real, think about it.
