NFT: David Wright admits the end is near

"It really hurts to say this, but I obviously can't be relied on to go out there and do what I've done throughout my career," Wright said Friday, before hosting his annual Vegas Night to benefit the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Virginia. "That is a tough thing to say."

"Everything is a concern for me. I haven't progressed to the point where I'll know how it feels to throw a baseball until we get closer to spring. I certainly don't know how the back is going to hold up."

"I don't want to have regrets," Wright said. "If I can't play? Then I'll be able to say I gave it my best shot, I really did. And if I can play, which obviously is the goal, then that's great as well. And that's ideal. I just don't want to have any regrets when it's all said and done that if I would have just put in some more work, or if I would have just concentrated a little more on the rehab program, I might have been able to do it.

"When the end comes, the end comes," he added. "Hopefully, I've got a little more left. But I guess that's to be determined."

One of the greatest Mets in my lifetime. But he's been out what, 3 years now? Poor guy looks like he's got cancer.

The other person that doesn't know it's over is David.

He is owed $47 million, would you walk away from that?
I thought he gets his money either way.

Theoretically, if he's medically cleared to play, or to try to play, he can't just walk away and still get paid. But as long as he's declared medically unable to play, which seems like what will ultimately happen, he can "retire" and get paid.
I think it’s safe to say he gave it his all. And I can’t blame him
PhiPsi125 : 1/20/2018 11:48 am : link
for that. But I can blame the team for leaving 3rd base a gaping hole for years. Even if there were holding out hope for a DW return, they had to know he wouldn’t be a full time player. Or anything lose to it.

It’s really too bad. He was a shoe-in for the HOF.

After his back injury either

Just think Wright was so good he was a cover athlete for the Show at one point

I have always had respect for Wright. He was a great leader and a great all around third baseman. It is sad that his injuries have derailed what was looking like a HOF career. I admire how hard he has worked to get back on the field, whether or not the motivation was money. With that said he really should retire now. There is an extremely slim chance that he would be even a replacement level player at this point due to his age, injury history, and physical condition.
Wow....

I feel really bad for him.

One of the easiest Mets... actually, easiest athletes to root for across any sport. DW is a guy that you want to represent your franchise.

I admire his efforts. I really do. But I wish he'd just admit to himself that he's not going to make it back or ever be the player he was before.

At least now, you can tell he's realized that the odds are not in his favor and that if he can't get back this year, it's time to call it.

He looks sickly, though. It's hard to watch.

..hasn't played in a couple of years+....concerned about throwing but should be equally concerned about hitting since. because.you know.it's still using arms.
How many games can he play when / if it all comes together and he can?
How many W's can he add? 10? 5?
Even when ready cut this deal: Bring him back 1home game. It'll sell tix.
Plays as much as possible this game. They cut him or he retires..his option. He retires post game hold a quick DW Appreciation night.
He takes the cut likely isn't signed anywhere anyway..but there a1 in 3 they get out from under the contract. Everybody gets what they want.
On the other 2 they were gonna own the rest of the contract anyway so no big thing.
No PR pain.

Same medical staff as the Giants (Hospital for Special Surgery). Makes you think, doesn't it?

Not really. HSS is pretty nationally renowned every year.

I get it, though.

Steve Nash said that an athlete dies twice. Once when he retires and then his natural death.

Playing this game has been his life since he was probably 4 years old.
It’s pretty clear
Dave on the UWS : 1/20/2018 4:19 pm : link
he’s going to give it his best shot in Spring training. When he can’t play anymore he’ll retire before the season starts. This way he a: gets paid and b:walks away with no regrets.

Mets, on the path from HOF lock to career derailed by injuries seemingly overnight.

It would be unwise of him to retire with that much guaranteed money on the table, he should probably look to get some kind of arrangement like Prince Fielder has.

Not a Mets fan, but I really like and respect Wright.
Matt M. : 1/21/2018 11:11 am : link
I don't understand some fans complaining that he is milking the team. I truly think he is trying everything he can to get back on the field. If I was a professional athlete, I would be doing the same thing.
Watch him go out with the Yankees

I'm pretty sure as long as the money is guaranteed in the contract (which there's no reason to believe it is not with Wright), it doesn't matter if he retires...he's getting all of that money. This is unless he works out an arragement to defer money.
Nope
pjcas18 : 1/22/2018 8:38 am : link
He retires he gets nothing. Unless as you say the Mets buy him out (like cuddyer). But then it’s not really retiring. It’s being bought out then retiring. And the contract is insured for 75% (I believe) so neither Wright or the Mets have much incentive for a buyout.
