Is George Edwards a possibility for Defensive Coordinator?

Emlen'sGremlins : 1/20/2018 11:22 am
He has coached a Top 5 defense in Minnesota the past 3 seasons. I've read that his contract is up after this season. Would he leave Zimmer for Shurmur and a lateral move? Would an Assistant Head Coach title accomplish things? I love Spags for 07, 08 and 16, but we can't bring him back. The entire coaching staff must be swept clean.
It might be a good career move for him

to get out from under Zimmer’s shadow. Like with Belichick in NE, most people credit Zim for the Minny defense. Being allowed to run his own defense would increase his value when teams are looking for HC’s.
Zimmer calls the Minnesota D

Not Edwards.

So the Giants would be offering play calling duties but on the hand, are you getting the Vikings defense?
no,it will be mascot steve

I’d say unlikely..

how many coaches make lateral moves unless they or their HC gets fired? i’d guess not many...you would think it’s generally frowned upon.

With his contract expiring

He may very well want to get out of Minnesota so that he can be the play caller and build up his resume in order to be a HC candidate someday. It is certainly possible with his familiarity with Shurmur.

Why would it be frowned upon? His contract is up, he can do whatever he likes.

It wouldn't be "frowned upon" because he is going to another team that allows him to call the plays on defense. Everyone would understand him making the move to another team.
I agree, him not having playcalling duties

makes the situations different...however at face value teams would lose confidence in hiring a guy who leaves for other situations without a change in position unless forced to. Its the only reason I can think of it never happening other than if they (or their HC) get relieved of their duties.
What about James Bettcher or Chuck Pagano?
twostepgiants : 1/20/2018 6:22 pm : link
Bettcher will probably not get the Cardinals HC job and would presumable be out of a job if Wilks gets it. he’s been Arizona DC since 2015 and sounds like he has done very well.

Pagano has obviously been Colts HC and did well initially but has stumbled since Luck started getting hurt. Pagano was once the DC of the Baltimore Ravens.
