Please let that happen. I would have been happy with either Del Rio, Edwards, or Bettcher. Now let's grab Russ Grimm as OL coach and this staff would be looking very strong.
I can't recall an instance of current ownership winning a bidding war for a big-name assistant coach. This isn't a "Mara/Tisch are cheap" complaint. It just doesn't seem to be the organization's MO to spend big on an established brand like Del Rio, who will certainly have multiple options - including a sabbatical at around $5MM.
Maybe it's coincidence that the Giants haven't competed in this market in the past. Maybe Gettleman and Shurmur have dictated a change. We'll see.
Anyway, I think Del Rio would be an excellent choice, and he comes with a huge network of coaching connections going all the way back to the Ravens' SB XXXV team.
Schefter says Del Rio is Leading Candidate for Giants DC
I love this hire, wanted him for dc as soon as I knew he was gone. Shurmur and one of his disciples can run the offense, and del Rio has full control of the defense. Seems similar to the LA Rams model.
Jack Del Rio and his wife sat across from my row in first class cabin from JAX to ATL about 10 years ago.
Couple of young kids walked up to front of plane and asked him for his autograph. Del Rio looked perturbed and told the kids he was busy and that he would sign it in the airport after they get off the plane.
Del Rio gets off the plane with the rest of our first class cabin and walks on his merry way down the terminal. The kids presumably deplane minutes later and never see him again.
Not for nothing, but that was a dick move...

Did you read the article? There is no bidding war. He is getting paid 6 million each of the next 3 years. Anything his new team gives him will be subtracted from Oakland's paycheck.

What are the makings of a Jack Del Rio 4-3 defense? I assume Linebackers are gonna be key since he played the position and always makes moves for them on every team he goes. But is it zone heave? Man heavy? Blitz or coverage based?

Giants should definitely disqualify him based on this story.
Del Rio has been prominent on Shurmur's list of defensive candidates, and he is open to joining the presumptive Giants coach.
The Giants are planning to schedule a second interview this week with Shurmur, sources told ESPN. If Minnesota loses to the Eagles in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, the Giants can negotiate or sign Shurmur immediately.
Del Rio won't be doing it for money if he becomes the Giants' defensive coordinator. He is scheduled to average $6 million per year from the Raiders over the next three years, and any salary he is paid by the Giants simply will be offset against his Oakland contract, sources tell Mortensen.
Link - ( New Window )

I have a good DelRio story. My friend's son was UDFA Fb for the Jaguars, the kid makes it to the final cut down, he has his knee blown out in practice, to this day DelRio has remained friends with my friend and his son.
The Raiders owe Del Rio $6 Million per for the next 3 years and are now also paying Gruden $10 Million per? Yikes
Gruden agreed to take a back loaded contract where he is paid 5 million the first three years. He will receive the bulk of of the money over the remainder of the contract which also will come in Vegas where there is no income tax.
we'll see... Spags' guys except the one they supposedly didn't want to leave haven't left.
I'm guessing this is a very good rumor based on Del Rio reaching out to prospective assistants -- once you start involving multiple people it's hard to contain it

I was getting worried as I've heard a few people on radio mention the ties to Spags, which I had forgotten about. I really don't want him or any of the current coaches.
I agree with Stan. Anyone but Spags and I like Spags but I think the Giants need clean coaching sweep on defense.
Will be a refreshing change if the Giants hire a HC and DC that's aren't part of the Mara Bros Ring of Trust after hiring the new GM and ST coach the Wellington way.
For whatever it's worth even though they were hired the Wellington way I think Gettleman and McGaughey are going to be major upgrades.

Id love for that clown who spammed his "Mara Bros" nonsense to come here and eat crow...which we know wont happen.
Speaking of the Mara Bros, as good as things have been going so far this of season, they can really kick it up to incredible if/when they announce that Chris Mara is separating from the team to pursue... whatever, no one cares! Just leave.

Are finally willing to break the mold on doing things as they always have. This past season sucked so much life out of this proud organization which resulted in the product looking like a steaming pile of shit, they have concluded they must do things they have never done.
But if the Raiders are subsidizing Del Rio for $6 Million for 3 years and it's unlikely that a guy with the HC experience he has is staying beyond 3 years and it's unlikely that a DC is going to be paid more than $6 Million, can we get away with no paying anything? I know it doesn't matter from a salary cap standpoint, but it would be a nice selling point to Mara.

There might be a minimum like with players. But that is just an assumption.
The OC hire will matter to me slightly less than the DC hire - Shurmur will have his fingerprints all over the offense and he's proven he knows how to run one.
I realize we just did this with McAdoo but McAdoo had less of a proven track record as a coordinator before he was promoted and I think Shurmur is a far better football coach.

Why would someone work for free? Yes, he's being paid out from his raiders contract, but he'd still be working here.

I get that he's being paid by oakland, but how does it work that any money he makes here is only an offset of that money rather than a separate contract? That doesn't make sense to me.
we'll see... Spags' guys except the one they supposedly didn't want to leave haven't left.
Have they stayed because they want to stay, or have they stayed because no body wants them?
What would the odds be of nobody wanting any of them (other than Graham)? Even considering the shit show we were subjected to this past season, I think the offense was clearly the lesser of the two units, and most of those guys got new jobs. Hell, even McAdoo is getting interviews. While they were told by management that they were free to explore other options, that's not really the same as being told they were out. Knowing that Spags and Shurmur have a history together, they may have felt that there was a chance they would be retained.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought that he was going to make the same $6 million no matter what. So if Mara pays him 3 million, he will get 3 million from the Raiders. Maybe I misunderstood it. But if that's the case then why would Mara pay him since it's coming from the Raiders anyway? But again, maybe I misunderstood.

ESPN said any money he makes will offset the Oakland salary so why would any team pay him a lot when they don't have to? It is like Revis this year. He was getting paid a ton by the Jets and signed for peanuts with no guaranteed money with KC. Link - ( New Window )

would be a dick move sportsmanship. The Maras like to play nice within the league, so they're not likely to stick it to another team. They'll give a fair contract.

Hes not working for free. He wont get the amount hes getting from the Raiders. There is almost always offset languange in coaches contracts that gives teams some relief if they get another job. So whatever he makes as an NFL assistant coach, that amount is discounted and not paid by Oakland. Oakland will be on the hook minus what he gets from the Giants. Maybe he willingly takes a below market contract to screw the Raiders. Especially if he feels he was scapegoated for the injuries or shoved out the door for Chucky. Why not do his new bosses a solid by taking a below market deal.
My understanding of how it works with the Oakland contract:
First of all, the terms of his extension arent public, so we dont know for sure what the guarantees are or how long they last. Second, while its true that his new salary will be an offset against the guarantee, its unusual for the hiring club to take full advantage. Sometimes, a coach with a big guarantee will take a one-year consulting gig and work for free/cheap; but I think the protocol with full-time jobs like coordinator is to let the market dictate the price. I cant prove that, but I also cant think of an example of a team getting a big-name coordinator at a crazy bargain price because he was still being paid by his old club.
I think the point of the he wont be doing it for the money line is that Del Rio doesnt need to work to get paid, not that money wont be a factor if he has to choose between multiple offers.
has a few local guys he could recruit from his Oakland staff in Rob Moore (Hempstead), Mike Tice (Islip), and Bernie Parmalee (Jersey City.) They are all offensive coaches so Shurmur would have to agree, of course.

After this game, Playing against Philly defense twice a year might be more than he wants to deal with.
Sadly Im thinking tonight wont be the last ass kicking Shurmur will experience at the hands of the fucking Eagles. He and Gettleman have quite a talent gap to try and narrow; especially if Wentz becomes the perennial mvp candidate it appears he will.

One reason we need to get a franchise QB.
It's incredibly difficult to be a consistent franchise.
We don't need to play the outdated "they're gonna be a force for a long time" card. It's a year to year league with the way contracts and injuries define the balance of power in the NFL.

Last year people thought the Raiders would be a force for a long time and that Derek Carr will be the next great QB.
is an upgrade over Spagnuolo, who put on a floor show this season. He got away with it. Nothing was ever reported because hes kissed the right asses in the media, and it was way too much fun for them to piss on McAdoo, instead.
That said, Del Rio is a formulaic coordinator , who relies heavily on four men to generate a pass rush . He isnt an aggressive , pressures-oriented coach. Better find him a pass rusher.

The consistent teams are generally the ones with elite, mvp type qbs. Brady, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, etc. NYG fandom aside, its pretty obvious Wentz is approaching that sort of level. Hell, he was likely winning mvp this year before getting hurt. And if he does indeed become that sort of player, the NYG, Dallas, and Redskins essentially become everyone in the AFC and NFC North when Rodgers and Ben are healthy. And that is fighting for 2nd place. For me, this is the #1 reason why Im qb or bust in the draft. Wentz isnt going anywhere and Roseman will put a good team around him. The NYG must respond.

Wentz is certainly going to be around for a while, but with his style of play he might get hurt against. And they're not going to keep that defense around. With success comes guys looking for money and teams looking to poach their players. Guys pile up the injuries, guys slow down, GMs get overconfident and complacent. There's no sure things in this league except the patriots, and they only earned that through decades of beating that into everyone's heads.

their own mess and not worry about Philly at this time. Getting Shurmur and possibly DelRio is, hopefully, a good start. Thankfully this isn't a total roster gut job. There's some talent on this roster to build with. If the right guys have been hired, they can be right there again in relatively short order. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that Chip Kelly was making a mess of the Eagles either.

Agreed, a lot of basic assignment defensive schemes relying on man to beat his man, which NYG was dreadful at in 2017.

No, I would rather keep Spags.Name the last top flight Defense he had?
Del Rio was only a DC for 3.5 years - subtract 1/2 year for when he filled in as interim HC when Fox had health issues.
It that time he fielded two top defensive units.
I'm assuming the snarky question has to do with his time as HC instead of DC or you really don't know much about Del Rio, and even then, he had top 10 defenses 3 years in Jacksonville.
The one thing you don't want Del Rio to do is institute the "Keep chopping wood" mantra. Other than that, he's been pretty damn consistent.
No, I would rather keep Spags.Name the last top flight Defense he had?
In five of the past six years, Spagnuolo has either run a defense that was ranked 31st or 32nd in the league, or was a position coach with limited scope of responsibility. Two of those years as DC, he oversaw units that finished among the worst in NFL history.
So when you say you'd rather keep Spags, what exactly is that based on?
You can't blame people for expecting the worst when the Giants have consistently brought back coaches despite their obvious flaw.
DiFillipo was rumored.
Look at him as a DC not a HC.

And apparently Dorsey for QB coach.

Giants should definitely disqualify him based on this story.
The nerve of a guy who is trying to enjoy some privacy on an airplane.
I tend to agree. There just is no place for behavior like that in our society.

I have a good DelRio story. My friend's son was UDFA Fb for the Jaguars, the kid makes it to the final cut down, he has his knee blown out in practice, to this day DelRio has remained friends with my friend and his son.

Gruden agreed to take a back loaded contract where he is paid 5 million the first three years. He will receive the bulk of of the money over the remainder of the contract which also will come in Vegas where there is no income tax.

I'm guessing this is a very good rumor based on Del Rio reaching out to prospective assistants -- once you start involving multiple people it's hard to contain it

Curious. What is the flight time from Jax/Atl?
Will be a refreshing change if the Giants hire a HC and DC that's aren't part of the Mara Bros Ring of Trust after hiring the new GM and ST coach the Wellington way.
For whatever it's worth even though they were hired the Wellington way I think Gettleman and McGaughey are going to be major upgrades.

...right on que.
Otherwise, I would love to have him.
Otherwise, I would love to have him.
I don't know if he is getting another HC job. He could be here for a while.

Already had 2 shots. He's going to have to pay his dues to earn another. If we bring in DeFilippo, he's likely to be 1 and done.
This a good thing, and does not preclude Slags staying on. He can coach the LBs.
Speaking of the Mara Bros, as good as things have been going so far this of season, they can really kick it up to incredible if/when they announce that Chris Mara is separating from the team to pursue... whatever, no one cares! Just leave.

It's exactly the kind of thing youd expect an Adam Sandler villain would do.
No former Eagles players allowed on the NYG sideline.
Former Eagles coaches is where I draw the line. I will accept the coaches, but he'll no to the players!
There might be a minimum like with players. But that is just an assumption.
I realize we just did this with McAdoo but McAdoo had less of a proven track record as a coordinator before he was promoted and I think Shurmur is a far better football coach.
Why would someone work for free? Yes, he's being paid out from his raiders contract, but he'd still be working here.
Coaches have agents too.

Huh? No matter what, Del Rio is getting paid $6 million per year over the next 3 years. Why does it matter who is paying him? How does that affect his agent?

If you told this story about Jerry Jones or Zeke Elliot, all of BBI would be denouncing him. But because Giants might hire JDR suddenly being a dick to some klids is just a matter of privacy.

It doesn't. It affects Mara and Tisch.
However, they won't have to get in a bidding war.
He's got a California touchy/feely vibe, more rah-rah than x's and o's.

I hope he'll have good position coaches for the strategy.
So let me say I would love to stand corrected. Del Rio would be fantastic.

I think the point of the he wont be doing it for the money line is that Del Rio doesnt need to work to get paid, not that money wont be a factor if he has to choose between multiple offers.
Would love that as long as hes healthy.

I'd take a chance on him, I really want Bradham from the eagle, would be sick if we could get both
Really?! The Giants nearly beat them twice this year. Should have beat them the first game.
Hate the Eagles with vigor! Anyway, Im sure Shurmer knows these players and can come up with a plan to beat them. He knows the NFC East pretty well.
Sadly Im thinking tonight wont be the last ass kicking Shurmur will experience at the hands of the fucking Eagles. He and Gettleman have quite a talent gap to try and narrow; especially if Wentz becomes the perennial mvp candidate it appears he will.
He should grab the Vikings QB coach ... great resume ... but I think the Vikings will hire him.

One reason we need to get a franchise QB.
Last year people thought the Raiders would be a force for a long time and that Derek Carr will be the next great QB.

We don't need to play the outdated "they're gonna be a force for a long time" card. It's a year to year league with the way contracts and injuries define the balance of power in the NFL.

Meanwhile people are saying we should draft Nelson with a straight face.

2014, when Denver had the third ranked defense.

Agreed, a lot of basic assignment defensive schemes relying on man to beat his man, which NYG was dreadful at in 2017.
Well Spags may have had a couple "top flight" defenses, but he also as presided over some awful defenses.
Oh wait, I forgot, none of that was his fault.
Del Rio has been more consistent.
Millburn : 6:59 am : link : reply
