No More Telegraphed Moves- Adjust Accordingly BBI

twostepgiants : 1/24/2018 7:46 am
As long as I can remember the Giants have telegraphed their moves from GMs to coaches to draft picks. This culminated with the Draft debacle of not one but two teams leaping over the Giants to take their players.

Well, that seems to have ended under Dave Gettleman

DG may even be employing .... deception and misdirection

So far this offseason the Giants hired Ernie Accorsi to conduct a typical Giants GM search complete with telegraphed leaks so that everyone and their brother knew the Giants were hiring Gettleman

Then the HC search occured and we had conflicting reports all over. First Giants wanted Wilks. Then Wilks didnt even make top 3. Then it was Patricia. Daily News was heavily Patricia. Some sources like NY Post were saying it was a legit 3 man race. No favorite alot were saying. BBI asshats legit thought it was McDaniels. We had some sources saying Pats guys were 1A and 1B.

When the smoke cleared Pat Shurmur was hired. Shurmur was one guy who didn't have his day in the sun as tbe guy the Giants wanted. Was this by design or was he a second or third choice? We will never really know and its probably better that way as the Giants compeitors dont know their true thinking.

And make no mistake tbeir was heavy competition for all 4 with the outcome unclear. So not telegraphing their moves was big.

The next piece of evidence is DG saying he would take his time and go through things in regards to staff and then we saw the purge of Marc Ross.

He then cuts Bobby Hart and leaves Flowers and Apple twisting in wind.

Lastly, Bettcher. We first keep Spags twisting in wind. BBI held their collective breathe as the move wrecked of typical Giants keeping their guy. Then the only rumor to break was Del Rio. This happened only after Shurmur was hired.
There was not even a rumor that Giants wanted Bettcher. This despite in looking like Bettcher wouldnt be able to stay in Arizona if they hired Wilks a defensive guy. No where was that linked. In fact the only word was the Giants were interviewing him the same day. No sign at all that he was the guy. This is big as he was offered another job same day.

Think about how this could have played out if moves were telegraphed. The Cards clearly were very interested in Shurmur. Reports everywhere he was favorite. Remember, People at that point were so convinced it was Wilks that BBI thought Giants wouldnt let him out of building. The Cards at that point moved to interview Wilks. He flew immediately to Arizona. If Cards knew Giants were all in on Shurmur, do they move quickly and make him offer? If they get Shurmur, then he likely keeps Bettcher with him.

Its very likely the Giants outfoxed the Cards to Shurmur and then the Titans to Bettcher.

These Giants moves are becoming unpredictable since Gettleman was hired. Thats a good thing. It appears we may be giving misdirection and deception and no one knows our true targets.

That means what we hear on Free agents signings, what we read on the #2 draft pick may be misdirection and countermeasures and deception.

Maybe its Darnold. Maybe its Barkley. Maybe its Rosen. Maybe its a trade down. Maybe its a trade up. Maybe its someone else.

Maybe even keeping Manning is this. After all, if Giants traded or released Eli then that would telegraph a QB at 2. We may not know Elis true fate until after the draft.

We may not know what leaks or rumors to believe or not.

Adjust Accordingly.

No it wasn't. No even close. All the beat guys were all over the place.

I agree with a lot of this thread. I think the "loose lips" syndrome the Giants had for the last number of years is gone. This is great news.

These moves have been well known. Telegraphed. No surprises except maybe DC.

I thought Gettleman was the leaker until he left in 2012 and the leaks continued. I don’t think it was Reese either but it could have been Ross. Or it could have been another long term lower level but plugged in employee who has retired recently.

We shall see soon enough.

You apparently were only reading whom you wanted to believe. TLG and Peppers were right all along with calling Shurmur as the favorite.

Tired of the "Typical Giants" refrain from many on bbi.

What s typical is fans thinking they know things they don t.

It's all about culpability. I think the OP is correct, and these holes have been plugged. Regardless of who was leaking the information, it appears that Gettleman has made it clear that leaks of information will no longer be tolerated. Reese, in particular, was asleep at the wheel and declined to do enough to stop the leaks. Essentially, Gettleman's no-nonsense attitude is sending a message to everyone that the old ways are out and his way is in.

"Typical"?? "Telegraphed leaks"??

Then all of a sudden the franchise is using cloak and dagger methods.

There is a fair number of people who keep talking about how the Giants will do things "the old giant way" or some type of derogatory reference to Mara ineptitude. Hell, the OP even insinuates that hiring Gettleman was done that way. This is after several people said we'd never fire Reese (he has a job for life!) or that we'd never fire a coach in season (Buh-bye Mac).

Now those people start crowing about a new dawn and a new day because all of their misconceptions have been exposed as being fraudulent.

It is really fucking annoying.
Do you think it's possible
smshmth8690 : 1/24/2018 8:55 am : link
that the GM could have told people in the Giants organization different names of 'Frontrunners' to find where the leaks were coming from?

Agree on this completely. The other piece or missing piece is you assume we wanted Shurmur all the way. How do any of us know if Patricia was offered the job and turned it down? How do we know if McDaniels was the real guy we wanted and he wanted to go elsewhere? Just because some beat writer said someone else was "the guy" didn't mean it was or ever would be. Why do we believe those guys on items like that but then say the beat writers have axes to grind when they write a negative story about the team or player? Selective acceptance I believe...
All in all, I like what has been done so far to improve the Giants

leadership. Gettleman, Shurmur and Bettcher are all intellgent, successful people with good experience and track records. We won't know for sure just how good they are until they start earning their paychecks, but from where we stand, it looks good to me.

Within minutes of it being created, then complain that too much information is out there.

It's a warped perspective.

I'm going to guess that someone will have correctly guessed
JohnB : 1/24/2018 9:19 am : link
who the Giants selection is at #2 and BBI will scream about "leaks" and how they were outfoxed by the Browns (or whoever trades for that #1 pick).

And if the Giants pick someone whose name hasn't been talked about, BBI will go crazy about DG "reaching" like Jerry did.

Reporters can, and do, make guesses and report as "an insider" or "an unnamed source" when it's all BS.

If BBI..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/24/2018 9:21 am : link
stays consistent, we'll make the #2 pick quickly and the masses will go ballistic that we didn't trade down or even spend the full clock time entertaining offers.

Believe what you want. TLG wasn't guessing. Whether he is the most connected, it can be debated. Search the Users for Limerick and read his posts. No where does he attribute his information to a guess/gut feeling/crystal ball. He was confident in the info that was given to him and he passed it along.

Stop with the hyperbole

In no way was Spags left "twisting in the wind". He most certainly knew a new coach may bring in his own DC.

clatterbuck : 1/24/2018 11:02 am : link
First, let's start with Giants firing coach and GM during the season. Then:

Gettleman hire, more of the same-old, he'll be front man for John Mara, Chris Mara, the ghost of Wellington Mara, yada, yada. Nothing will change.
-- Gettleman starts "kicking ass" by firing Marc Ross, cutting Bobby Hart, running 2018 draft himself, and revamping the team's entire approach to evaluating and drafting players.

New HC: The place is such a "shithole" none of the leading HC candidates will want to come here. Giants will be left holding an empty bag and be forced to bottom feed. It's all a scam to bring back Spags as HC. Nothing will change.
-- Hello Pat Shurmur who may have been leading candidate in Arizona.

Shurmur worked for Spags in St. Louis therefore Spags was wired as DC. Mara made Shurmur promise to bring back Spags. Nothing will change.
-- Hello John Bettcher. Bettcher likely to revamp approach to defense, defensive scheme, and the kind of defensive players that will be drafted, sought in FA.

Let's see what's next.

Awesome post. Maybe we'll get back to the days when the Giants selected Phil Simms and the fans attending were stunned and wowed and saying who's he...

Great drama, that's for sure! Makes you wonder if DG is having as much fun toying with the tri-state sports media as "45" does...

Do you think Mara agreed to pay him handsomely to just hang tight if their plans to get their head coach fell through? I can't see a reason why they would string him along unless he was a fall-back position. You would think he would have been interviewing if he didn't have a chance in hell of coming back...unless he has had conversations that nobody is tracking. Hell, maybe he becomes the DC for the Patriots--once their season ends.
At least we're not Jest fans

The only time in recent memory about a draft pick, let alone a staff member was "telegraphed" was the Eli Manning love back in 2004.

Do beat writers and fans guess about players & coaches? Sure. But it goes no further than that.
Glad that you are saying this
GeoMan999 : 1/24/2018 12:27 pm : link
The Shurmer and DC hirings were handled much better with misdirection than in the past. It is easy to guess and say after the fact someone had the information all along. Then you have the Gary Myers of the world who may have very well been misdirected without knowing......and that is killing him!

Yes, Shurmer may not have been the first choice and we will never know, but this was handled much, much better. With said, some people on BBI will never be happy.
nothing funnier than fans
