NFT: What is your personal worst (or least favorite) sports year?

Victor in CT : 2/6/2018 11:28 am
Piggybacking from yesterday's Rick Nash thread, for me it was 1975-76. What was yours?

Here's the summary:

*Football: The Giants were in the midst of a hideous, homeless stretch, went 5-9 in 1975, began 1976 0-9 on the way to 3-11, canning Bill Arnsparger in season and naming John McVay coach.

*Baseball: after a promising 89 win 1974, Catfish Hunter and Bobby Bonds signed for 1975 and after a poor start they won 83 games. The Mets were in year 2 of a 10 year freefall.

*Basketball: Knicks were aging and in their slide from the glory years, and Walt Frazier was traded to Cleveland before the 1976 season.

*Hockey: The Rangers killed us throughout that year. They lost the JP Parisi game at home and were bounced by the Isles in April '75 from the playoffs, then the Cat shit himself and dumped Hadfield over the summer for Nick fucking Beverly, traded Gilles Villemure for Doug fucking Jarrett, lost Eddie Giacomin on waivers, then kicked us all in the balls and traded the great Jean Ratelle and Brad Park for a broken down Espo and Carol Vandais. More joy followed there in January '76 when the Cat was canned and replaced by John Ferguson, who then dumped Rod Gilbert as soon as he could in the fall of '76. And as colhowpepper pointed out, Ferguson also traded Rick Middleton for Ken Hodge before the 1976 season began.

This year and its not even close...

a 3-13 Giants season with the team I hate the most on this planet winning it all...

The rangers totally collapsed and now are barely watchable...

Also a Mets fan, and watched a team that went to the WS just a cpl seasons ago deteriorate into trash.

May 2017 burn in hell never to be spoken of again.
2017 has to be up there.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/6/2018 11:31 am : link
Giants go 3-13 & the Eagles win it all. I guess the one bright moment was the Heels winning it all.
This year
MetsAreBack : 2/6/2018 11:32 am : link
there's no historical precedent for anyone 41 years old (my age) or younger. Kansas City fans dont have it this bad (and they only have two sports, not four)

Its made me borderline renounce sports.
As a Giants, Ranger and Met fan
gmen9892 : 2/6/2018 11:41 am : link
It's this year and there is no other year that is remotely close. Mostly because all 3 teams had above average expectations and each has flamed out in spectacular fashion.
Any year that a rival wins a championship.
Ceez2.0 : 2/6/2018 11:45 am : link
Sunday sucked. Before that it was the four years the Miami Heat were making the final and winning a couple of rings along the way.
2017 without a doubt

Giants virtually out of contention by week 4

Rangers eliminated

Knicks blow ass

Cuse football beats the #1 team and does not do much of anything after that

Cuse B-Ball in a down year.

Only bright spot was the Yankees
This year

I was born in 1978 and am only a true fan of the Giants and UConn Men's Basketball. The Giants - well, we know the story - and UConn seems like it's teetering on the brink of falling into hopeless obscurity for quite a while.
This is the worst Giants season of my lifetime....
Keith : 2/6/2018 11:45 am : link
Factor in expectations, performance, what happened with Eli and all the disfunction from this season and there isn't a close 2nd. I feel like every knicks season is my worst. Yankees, probably the last year in the old stadium was my most disappointed.

The whole year wrapped up on a single day.

Almost got booted from my dorm because I literally punched the wall and made a big hole leading from the hallway into my neigbor's room. Got saved because the Dorm Director was from Boston.

I had the same reaction Bill. Its 1978!

This one is pretty damn bad.

As others have likely said ...

* The Giants. Enough said there.
* The Mets imploding, top to bottom.
* The Knicks getting Hornacek'd.

FUCK!
This year and it's not even close...

Giants: 3-13/Big expectations and the season was a disaster.

Mets: 70-92/Big expectations and it was one injury after another. 2015 feels like a decade ago.

Rangers: 25-23-5/This season is collapsing in front of our eyes. This window is closed shut. Time to start thinking about the future. Playoffs are a long long shot. The last 7-8 years the Rangers have been reliable for a good season. Not this year.

Knicks: 23-31/Quick start was fool's gold. This team is trash and so is the coach. I can't stand watching them.

Also in '75, the Orange Crud won the Stanley Cup.

either this one or 2004

A bitter rival breaks a long championship drought (Sawx 2004, Eagles this year), Giants sucked (6-10 2004, 3-13 this year), Rangers sucked, Knicks...well, you know.
Probably 2017.
Dave in Hoboken : 2/6/2018 12:15 pm : link
2018 already looking better thanks to the Yankees, though.
First that came to mind for me was 2004
mfsd : 2/6/2018 12:16 pm : link
- Lifelong Yankees fan. Nuff said.
- Giants did give some reason for optimism with Coughlin and the Eli draft, but that was a tough season.
- Rangers reached the pinnacle of their overpraid veteran suckage, then lockout
- Knicks were in the early years of the Isaiah debacle
1995
Les in TO : 2/6/2018 12:21 pm : link
raptors (outside of mighty mouse, damon stoudamire) sucked in their first season, giants sucked after a promising end to the 1994 season (embarrassed at home by the cowboys on Monday night football), maple leafs and blue jays started a long slow sucky decline after prosperity in the early 90s.

Greg from LI : 2/6/2018 12:48 pm : link
so I obviously don't remember it, but I've heard that call so many time.
Even with this Sunday's disaster, I would have to say 1991.
Boy Cord : 2/6/2018 12:48 pm : link
Actually, it occurred in 1992 as it was the Skins over the Bills in the Super Bowl. I had just moved to DC and had to put up with their arrogance, even though the Giants had just won the Super Bowl the year before. This cemented my unhealthy hatred towards everything about the Skins.

Fast forward 26 years and they are a fk'n joke!! Even though the Eagles won, it's fun watching the Skins go nowhere. And they're not ever getting anywhere with Snyder.
I have to agree..
FatMan in Charlotte : 2/6/2018 12:53 pm : link
with this, but Syracuse beating Clemson and the Yankees have made parts of the year easier to endure:

What is certain is this Giants season has by far been the worst in my lifetime.
Giants, Mets, Knicks, Devils fan....
Chris684 : 2/6/2018 1:23 pm : link
2000-2001 has to be tops for me.

October 2000 lose World Series to Yanks.
January 2001 get destroyed in SB by Ravens.
April-May 2001 lose 1st rd heart breaker to Raptors.
June 2001 lose crushing game 7 to Avs (F Ray Borque).

For those keeping score that's 0-3 in 3 championship appearances plus pretty bad 1st round exit.

This year is up there for me just based on football alone which is my favorite sport.

3-13, Eli benched for Geno and Eagles SB is enough to cry Uncle. The Mets were terribly disappointing, the Knicks are just meh, but the Devils have been a nice surprise.

This year.
732NYG : 2/6/2018 1:25 pm : link
Seriously, fuck everything about this year. At least the Yankees were fun to watch.
Has to be this year
jvm52106 : 2/6/2018 1:27 pm : link
but 1987 was right there. The strike, the replacement disaster and just not being even close to defending the Title. That sucked.

Giantfan in skinland : 2/6/2018 1:49 pm : link
Specifically, the weekend of the Superbowl.

Jay Williams pulls off the miracle minute bringing Duke back from 10 down with less than a minute to play against my Terps.

But it's ok, I told myself. I still have the Superbowl.

Gulp.

After that, the Knicks began the 10 year stretch of sub 500 basketball that basically killed my interest in the NBA until recently (and no longer as a Knicks fan).

This year was pretty damned bad

There's different ways to suck.

This was a particularly weak way to suck.
2017 without a doubt
Maximus, Esq. : 2/7/2018 6:28 pm : link
Mets degrade into steaming pile of shit due to unprecedented injuries;

Giants suck shit beyond all comprehension, along with myriad of injuries, to go 3-13 and to top it off, the Eagles (the Eagles!) win the Super Bowl.

It gets no worse for me personally — as coming into the season I considered the Giants a legitimate Super Bowl contender and the Mets a likely playoff team.

Relative to expectations, 2017 was by far the worst for me.
Thks was, by far, the worst Giants season I've endured
Matt M. : 2/7/2018 9:17 pm : link
But, for me it wasn't 1 single season, but 1994 and 1995 back to back. First, the strike wiled out the WS, which the Yankees were poised to win and then after Mattingly resurrected his vintage self in September to help win the WC and then again in the ALDS, they drop 3 in a row to Seattle. That, for me, was the most devastating playoff loss, not just because they seemed to havethe series wo , but because Mattingly was done. I was crushed. He deserved a title.

And, Bill White's call of Dent's HR just never gets old.
The only thing that would have made this year worse
moespree : 2/7/2018 9:30 pm : link
Were if the NFL named the Eagles and Cowboys co-champions.
And 2004 for the Yankees never stung as much as it normally would
