NFT: Yanks aquire Russell Wilson from Rangers

T-Bone : 2/7/2018 2:10 pm
Just got an alert about it on my phone. It also says, though, that the Seahawks QB has no interest in becoming 2 sport athlete.

Just curious why the Yanks would make this move unless they think they have a chance at Wilson playing for them? Figured I'd ask some of you guys are who are more into baseball than I am.
I don't

Get this at all, if this is purely a PR move, which it must be, then give me a fucking break already.
Well we could use a pitcher or utility infielder.

the Yankees had Dave Winfield, who was drafted in 3 sports. They had John Elway, Deion Sanders, and Drew Henson. So why not, let's do this thing.

I'm not sure why anyone would be bothered by this. Can someone explain?
PR?

Another year or 2 of a lousy OL there, a few hits or concussions, and maybe baseball starts looking good.
Isn't he a 2nd baseman or OF?
Maybe an SB specialist?

Some are easily bothered.
For the record...

I'm not 'bothered' by at it at all. When I saw the alert I had to read it twice because I didn't understand why the Yanks would make such a move if Wilson doesn't plan on playing as I'm assuming they had to give up something for him.
it's "future considerations"
Greg from LI : 2/7/2018 2:34 pm : link
Which will probably be a non-prospect A ball outfielder or something. The article said Wilson has made appearances, giving talks to young players, at Rangers training camp a few times, so presumably that's what the Yankees are planning on doing.
They give up nothing
Matt M. : 2/7/2018 2:37 pm : link
for a guy that will serve a PR role and maybe some motivational appearances in the minors and spring training. This is a problem why?
Oh... so they didn't have to give up anything?
T-Bone : 2/7/2018 2:42 pm : link
I didn't know that. Was unable to actually read the article that alert was linked to.

It's clear to me now that he just likes Taylor Ham/Pork Rolls.

more on Wilson...
Mike in St. Louis : 2/7/2018 3:15 pm : link
"Wilson played his college baseball at NC State and was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round in 2010. In 2013, he was dealt to the Rangers and went to spring training in 2014 and 2015. He has always dreamed of playing for the Yankees, Wilson says, and plans to attend spring training with the Bronx Bombers this year. Wilson still has no plans to be a dual-sport athlete."

Cashman has Wilson on his fantasy team...

Hey, if i'm him I test the waters if he shows he can be a good baseball player and has a few more injuries in football, why not "retire" to baseball at 32 or 33 compete at the pro level and do less harm to your body
Besides the PR
JohnF : 2/7/2018 3:36 pm : link
The Yanks might be thinking about grooming Wilson as a manager after his football career is over. The trend now is getting someone who can work with Sabermetrics to run the team, and we know that Wilson has leadership skills, and a ring in his profession.

I think this fits more into the Yanks trying to improve their player training on leadership, winning and traits for success. They have run a "Captains Camp" for some of their high end prospects where they emphasized on and off-field leadership and behavior.

I think this is an extension of that. I think the Yanks want to expose their young prospects to winners from all walks of life and show them traits, mindsets and mannerisms of people who succeed so they players can emulate that. It should help prepare those players for the pressure cauldron that is New York and overcome adversity.

After saying all of that, it should come as no surprise that Judge was one of their attendees at Captians Camp in the past.
