Thoughts on Mike McGlinchey?

yatqb : 2/7/2018 7:33 pm
I see him as a really sold LT prospect, similar in style and body type to Solder.

Problem is that he’ll likely go somewhere between 15 and 20.
He's more

of a RT
I think he has better feet than that,

and although he’s a good run blocker, he isn’t the mauler I’d like at RT.

Love his leadership abilities. I think he's someone who will be nitpicked but he's a starting caliber LT. Has the mindset and work ethic. Has the quick feet. His body type reminds me of Boselli coming out. Long and lean for a lineman. He needs to get consistent with his punch and feet being insync. Obviously better core strength but thats just about every OL coming out every year. I like him, if he slips within striking distance of our 2nd round pick I'm all for making a move for him.
Let's see how he does at the Combine first...

Sounds like a guy we already have at left tackle.

Not similar at all. Flowera gets by(the little that he does) with his athletic build and ability. MM does it im spite of it.

RT starter day 1, LT maybe someday
Neither Flowers or McGlinchey
Modus Operandi : 2/8/2018 3:58 am : link
Are athletes at LT. Both are slow, lumbering drive blockers with poor technique best suited for RT or inside.
I think Orlando Brown is better than him

Every single scout has said there is no difference anymore betwee left and right tackle. Except for the qb being able to see the rush to his right the dominant edge rushers no longer line up across from the left tackle. Teams have more than 1 edge rusher and schemes no moves guys all over. So to say he isn’t a left tackle he’s a right tackle is just pure guessing unless you know which hand he’s stronger with and what his footwork is all about

It's true that the skill set of an OT should be considered the same. The one thing about the RT/LT position is traditionally different in that the TE will most often line up on the right side. The right side of the O Line is more of the road grader strong side and the left side is the more athletic weak side. Depending on the scheme an offense runs, the left tackle could still be more important based on needing more athleticism from that position.
Sy does not like him at all at LT
superspynyg : 2/8/2018 8:08 am : link
Rt is fine. IF he falls to rd 2 for us ABSOLUTLY. If not no way.
He's a solid player who will give you that effort,
barens : 2/8/2018 8:12 am : link
but ultimately will struggle at times at left tackle. Sort of reminds me of David Diehl.

I get that in today's NFL strong edge rushers are just as likely to come from either side of the line. But I doubt that "Every single scout has said there is no difference anymore between left and right tackle". In fact in your own post you actually point out two reasons why there's a big difference.

Protecting the blind side of a QB is still a big deal and with most QBs being right handed, the LT's pass-blocking ability has to be better than that of the RT's.

You also mention dominant hand as a consideration as well. It's one of the reasons many have mentioned that Flowers would be better as a RT.

There's still a big difference between LT and RT, which is why you'll hear knowledgeable draft gurus and scouts label college LTs as needing to switch to RT.
Looks like a RT

slow feet, struggles with speed, we've already got one of them.

This. I'm not a scout and I could see he is a bit slow for a LT. He is a mauler though. He's likely to last until late 1st early 2nd in my unsubstantiated opinion.
There are a number of decent LTs

in this years draft that will still be sitting on the board when the Giants pick in round 2. This year there should be no excuse for not grabbing one.

I also think that the Giants may already have their LT in Chad Wheeler. If that the case its a matter of upgrading the other positions on the line (which could include resigning Fluker, moving Flowers to LG or RT, and drafting/signing a G, T, and/or C)

The interior lineman who should be there at 34 are better.

McGlinchey could be a good bet to go to the Bengals at 12.
he and Orlando Brown

NYG can't put all their money on Wheeler

they need to strongly consider adding a legit LT.
It'd be really irresponsible to assume anything about Wheeler

Much less go into the season with that.
Will be a great locker room guy
Sy'56 : 2/8/2018 9:44 am : link
and a solid RT in this league. Someone you know will work his butt off week in, week out as long as he is in the league. Pays attention to detail. Strong hands, does things right. Just lacks the desired talent of a 1st rounder. 2nd round I would consider him

Agree. I can't believe some people are penciling him in now.
Watch the game against Georgia
gmenrule : 2/8/2018 10:16 am : link
McGlinchey was a turnstile in that game. He is more suitable for RT as speed rushers give him problems. Quentin Nelson is the guy yo want for OG.
McGlinchey
Peppers : 2/8/2018 12:58 pm : link
Anyone else notice how draftniks want to put every Tackle at RT now? Everyone is so scared to say he can play LT after all the bust in recent years.. Lol someone has to play it! I think one of the problems is people are expecting perfect prospects. The nit-picking has never been worse in my opinion.

What I see from McGlinchey is correctable. He's got quick enough feet. The problem here is that he will either stop them when he punches or he crosses them. As a lineman, especially a LT your feet need to remain short and choppy. McGlinchey does a lot of things right. He gets out quick, he has good balance, shoulders stay parallel and square, and he's a knee bender. Which I saw some compare him to Flowers which is a horrible comparison but mainly because Flowers is a waist bender and that causes him to lean and get off balance. And thats something he's having a hell of a time correcting. The discipline and technique that goes into this position is, in my opinion, second to none on the football field. And with the lack of practice reps these guys are getting and the lack of pro style offenses in college its really hurting the line play. Speaking of, McGlinchey is one of the few coming out who has played in more of a pro style O.

The Georgia game was brought up.. he didn't have a bad game. Two blitzes weren't picked up on his side which most people understand there are blocking adjustments that the Center and sometimes the QB need to make at the line. The game killing play at the end of the game, McGlinchey was beat clean for a strip sack. But I'm glad this was brought up because in moments of failure we find out what people are really made of in how they respond. At the end of that game McGlinchey apologized to Wimbush, and he asked to address the media to face the music and claim his responsibility in the loss. The following week against BC he didn't let up a sack and they ran all over one of the better run defenses in cfb.

Something else I liked when I watch McGlinchey the games against Bradley Chubb. 2016 Chubb beat him good. It was a sloppy game in the mud and McGlinchey had issues especially at the start. This past year, completely different story. McGlinchey played much better.

In all I think Mike McGlinchey is among the highest of character guys you'll ever see. Is he an All-pro LT? I'm not saying that but, I think he's a capable starter with potential of much more if he corrects the issues with his feet.

Maybe but watching the TV broadcasts of OKLAHOMA games this past year I never saw anybody get around him for the most part but I’m by no means an expert at evaluating film.I read where Sy said he has trouble getting to the second level but I camevaway impressed I think he will go late 1st round.

Based on the write-up on him I have read, he is being projected as a RT in the NFL
