While Rocky 4 was the universal favorite, more people say 3 was better in terms of opponent. I dont see it but curious your feelings.
Rocky 3- Rocky vs Mr T(Clobber lang)... beaten, Mickey dies and has to relearn by becoming a different fighter. Clobber lang with monster punches that even the viewer can feel.
Rocky 4- USA vs USSR... big time politics playing on the screen but with boxing. Best friend dies, training in the snow, and brain/ CTE inducing fight to the finish.
which one is your favorite and why
So absurd on so many levels. In short, I loved it.
As an adult 3 really isn't that great of a movie as I remember it and Rocky 4 isn't as bad.
Rocky 4 has to be corniest of all the films though. Rocky isn't even rocky. He's not the dumb figher off the streets. He doesn't suddenly become smarter because he has more money. It is one giant cliche and Rocky overcoming communism is pretty absurd.
From a pure fun stand point, I don't have big problem with either.
Fun fact - Dolph Lundgren has a master's in chemical engineering and was going for his Ph.D at MIT on a Fulbright scholarship when he decided to leave school and try to be an actor.
Havent seen the movie in years but as I recall he was terrifying.
Rocky III
was the superior movie.
Mr. T as the opponent was so much more entertaining than Drago and the Glasnost ending to Rocky IV was pathetic.

III came out in '82 or '83, way before Iron Mike.
Scores on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic disagree.
R III... 6.7, 63%, 57%
R IV ... 6.8, 39%, 42%
Yup... think about the driving scene alone. It's just filler. LOL

Sometimes, a terrible movie is great or more accurately, entertaining.
If Rocky 4 Happened for Real - ( New Window )
2. Great opponent. Ivan Drago, to this day is the ultimate sports villain. "If he dies he dies". He only had a few lines but they're all memorable. The only thing I remember about Clubber Lang is that he called Apollo Creed "boy".
3. Shocking unpredictable moment. You didn't expect Apollo Creed to get killed in the ring did you ? I didn't see that coming.
Interesting tidbit: One of the teasers for 4 was a monologue from Ivan Drago. He probably had three times as many lines in the teaser than he did in the actual movie

You don't remember Lang's classic response to the 'What's your prediction for the fight?'
'PREDICTION? PAIN.'

Rocky 3 is one of the most quotable movies of all time:
My Prediction?
Also launched Hulk Hogans career into another stratosphere.
He was a huge part of Wrestlemania because of the movie. If Hulk doesn't do the movie and Mr. T doesn't do Wrestlemania, both probably don't exist.
Though Starcade had been around, so I am sure WWE would have figured something out to compete, but the spectacle that was the original Wrestlemania sure wouldn't have been there.
think about that 10 year old kids, Eye of the Tiger. That song has to be 35 years old or close to it. It's that and Shipping up to Boston, which I hate.
they wouldn't dare play Living in America or Hearts on Fire or even the corny No Easy Way out or the silly training montage people on here seem to love.
Eye of the Tiger is an institution, handing this victory, despite all other arguments for or against, to Rocky III
And it doesn't even matter that Eye of the Tiger is also on the Rocky IV soundtrack.
Quote:
Crazy to think that without Rocky 3 having MR T and Hogan in it and without Cyndi Lauper having Capt Lou in her Girls just want to have fun video there would be no wrestlemania ,That’s why I don’t understand why Cyndi Lauper is not in the WWE hall of fame

HBO or Showtime have been playing the entire collection non-stop over the last month. The most interesting thing about watching Rocky V these days is seeing how much CTE he has and how much they show him dealing with it.
As much as "Eye of the Tiger" is the obvious choice for best pump-up / fight song in perhaps movie history, "No Easy Way Out" is still my favorite to listen to when I work out.
And speaking of "Eye of the Tiger," this is a fascinating background of the use of the song in the movie, per Wikipedia
All in all, I don't like what happened to the Rocky character after Rocky II. Totally different character.
As a side note - rumor has it they were going to bring Clubber Lang back for Rocky 6 (aka Rocky Balboa) for a cameo during the final fight he has against Mason "the Line" Dixon. That would have been kind of cool for continuity purposes.
As far as Rocky V goes - that was pure shit. Should have never made that movie.
I'm too young for this but I can imagine the silence in that theater when Apollo died in the beginning. Must have been nuts.
