NFT: National Pizza Day!

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/9/2018 12:51 pm
Chow down fellow pizza lovers. What's your pizza of choice? Give me pepperoni or give me death!
I go to Colony every Friday
UConn4523 : 2/9/2018 12:55 pm : link
damn sure I won't miss it today.
My recent kick is
aimrocky : 2/9/2018 12:55 pm : link
Broccoli Rabe w/ Sausage. I usually rotate through that, mushroom & onion and sausage & peppers.

I'm also a big fan of hot oil & cherry peppers from Colony Grill here in CT, but the hot oil really tears apart your stomach the next day.
I like very thin sliced onion
UConn4523 : 2/9/2018 12:55 pm : link
I'll eat meat on pizza, but good pizza doesn't need it.
Hey Uconn,
Oskie : 2/9/2018 12:59 pm : link
Stingers, sausage and hot oil dripped on the outer edge so it seeps onto the whole slice as you eat it...its heaven!
Let's all hit up Pizza Hut for the wife!

Hot oil and sausage?

I expect that kind of answer from Brett, but....

All kidding aside, there's probably some truth to that.
Depends on how far south you go.
GiantFilthy : 2/9/2018 1:06 pm : link
NC is in pretty good shape because you mfers won't stop moving down here.

Hot oil comes from the Stingers, they are cooked in oil which is used for the topping. Definitely don't need both and the hot oil doesn't make it any hotter so I'd get Stingers.
What are stingers?
Bill L : 2/9/2018 1:19 pm : link
.
Pepperoni or death
njm : 2/9/2018 1:20 pm : link
Unless you're near New Haven. Then it's Frank Pepe's White Clam Pie.

They are roasted Serrano (I believe) peppers. You get 1 per slice. They roast them in oil and use that oil for the "hot oil" which is why you don't need to put "hot oil" on a pizza with Stingers because they are much hotter than the redundant "hot oil" is.

Basically you'd be getting a super greasy pizza that isn't any hotter.
It does grease it up a little,
Oskie : 2/9/2018 1:32 pm : link
but its like a stinger in every bite.

I was in New Haven for work last week and got the White clam for the first time (My company actually insures some of their locations). What a letdown. It was ok but I expected so much more. I guess i'm spoiled living on Long Island and in the city and Brooklyn all the time.
On a trip up to New England
PaulBlakeTSU : 2/9/2018 2:12 pm : link
we stopped in New Haven for pizza. Went to Frank Pepe for a pepperoni and a white clam. It was 8 at night, and it was a letdown. Good but nothing special. I was shocked tobe so disappointed.

We immediately went to Modern Apizza and were blown away. One of the best slices I've ever had.

On the way back from the trip, we stopped in New Haven again to give Frank Pepe another shot. Both the white clam and the pepperoni were far better than the first time and were delicious.

But I'd still give Modern the nod over it.
Modern Pizza
Chef : 2/9/2018 2:25 pm : link
is a lot better than Pepe's but only has one location, that is in New Haven. Pepe's opened up restaurants all over the state.. I am in Hartford.
My father is a Pepe's diehard since he was born and raised in NH
pjcas18 : 2/9/2018 2:28 pm : link
and when he makes his semi-annual trips to new haven he always hits up pepe's and he tells me it's hit or miss now with regards to quality.

I am a Modern fan, and would always go to Modern over Pepe's Sallys, Bar, Ernie's or anywhere else.

Modern Italian Bomb is the best pizza on the planet, tough to eat though.

Best pizza I ever had was at this place on Long Island (Huntington - was dating a girl from there at the time). I don't remember the name though.
I know chains are frowned upon...

It's really good......

it's pepperoni and mushroom. Since I started making my own I've branched out to different combos. Pancetta and brussel sprouts, smoked salmon, clam and garlic, and my personal fave red onions sun dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts

I really miss the Anthony's Coal Fired that was by Exit 13
Victor in CT : 2/9/2018 3:18 pm : link
on Rt 1 at the Darien/Norwalk line. Another asshole landlord tripled the rent and drove out a good business. took aomost 2 years to fill it, and that guy gave up after 6 months. Now empty.

I think Colony sucks personally. An oil slick on a cracker. A most disappointng experience.

I've had Frank Pepe's once, at the location in West Hartford. I was really looking forward to it, and it did not disappoint. Tried the White Clam, and the Sausage & Roast Red Pepper. I loved the clam, but the sausage & roast red pepper was the best pizza I have ever had.
I'm in NJ, and favorites here are Santillo's in Elizabeth, Sciortino's in South Amboy, Razza in Jersey City, and DeLorenzo's in fucking eagle country.

Modern Appizza - Italian Bomb:

There's an Anthony's Coal Fired now on Rte. 4 eastbound in Englewood NJ. Very good, but not in the running for best ever.
The plain apizza
beatrixkiddo : 2/9/2018 4:27 pm : link
(Just sauce, garlic and some grated parm) at Sally’s is my personal favorite. Also I order a Clam Casino which is better than a plain white clam, next time you go order it with, Bacon, Cherry Peppers, Clams, Garlic and Parm. That’s all you need. No cheese no sauce. Also the rosemary potato onion they do at Sally’s is equally amazing.

Modern, Bar and Da Legna’s are probably all better than Pepe’s. The original is the only one worth going to, but even their its very inconsistent. I fear Sally’s is going to turnninto the same after they sold the place. The family still runs and manages the Wooster st shop however, for how long who knows.

While it won't pass for real East Coast pizza...it actually was not bad.

Good crust...

The wife went for the fancy pizza...I had mine basic...she ended up eating mine

They have great iced tea

I will buy a Stouffers French Bread Pepperoni Pizza once in a while if they are on sale.
Ever since being back in NJ, I always buy a Sicilian and Large Cheese Pie and store slices in the freezer. Could never go back to store frozen pizza. I also buy Beef Empanadas by the dozen from a local Argentinian bakery to freeze, as well.

Newman's Own are the only frozen pizza anyone will eat in my house and I don't usually eat it at all, maybe the kids leftovers.
