You can forget how great OBJ is
I hope that he does not lose any of his explosive speed from his injuries
very cool
markky : 2/11/2018 11:53 am : link
I'd forgotten OBJ was penalized on the "proposing to the kicking net" play. with a new staff i hope we've seen the end of WRs getting penalties after a TD.
What a ME monster.

Hopefully we can trade him away for a better team player

Couldn't disagree more with you! The gray pants were awful, IMO. They look dreary and like they're from some different era. I also really like white pants. In fact I liked the Niners' white pants more than gold.

You are a great poster on this site...I am just going to keep posting this until it sinks in...

Manning career stats as of week 2 2017:

Targeting Odell Beckham: 63%, 35-7 TD/INT, 111.4 passer rating

Targeting anyone else: 59.5%, 285-209 TD/INT, 79.9 passer rating

Odell is a superstar of the highest order. He is going to help us win a Superbowl in the future, and I can't wait.

Can you post Joe Montana's numbers targeting Jerry Rice...how about Matt Ryan and Julio Jones...Ben and Antonio Brown...Terry Bradshaw and John Stallworth and Lynn Swann..or Peyton and Marvin Harrison...?

So a QB's rating is probably going to be better when throwing to better receivers...?

30 point swing in passer rating? I highly doubt it. I know you want to turn this into me bashing Eli. I have already stated numerous times I think Eli is a HOFer. This stat to me is evidence as to how great Odell is.

That's an unfair comparison. You're comparing 3 seasons worth of data to 13 seasons, which includes Eli through various stages of his career and with different offenses. You need to put the stats of his targeting everyone else in the same seasons as targeting OBJ. I'm sure the difference in gap won't be huge and it'll be way more accurate.

You sure of that? I will remind you that all of the Odell years do not even include the best years of Eli's historic career. From playoffs 2007-mid 2012 was Eli's prime. He was fantastic. Easily a top 10 QB in the NFL.

And No, it is let's call it 3.25 seasons of Odell as a part of Eli's 14 years quarterbacking the Giants. That is roughly 23% of Eli's time as starting QB of this team.

Eli has played with a lot of great receivers over the years (Burress, Toomer, Cruz, Nicks), none of them have even remotely approached the level of greatness we have seen from Odell in his short career.

I did say that I don't think it'll change much. You do bring up a good point since this way it shows that Eli wasn't nearly as good with some very good receivers that came before Eli.
Don't bother. That analytic tells the story very well

Here are Eli's numbers using only the three full seasons of OBJ's career (and removing the games that OBJ missed in those seasons to keep it as fair as possible):

Non-OBJ: 62.7%; 46-29 TD-INT; 83.39 rating; 6.32 Y/A; 10.09 Y/C

Tgt-OBJ: 63.0%; 35-7 TD-INT; 112.39 rating; 9.02 Y/A; 14.31 Y/C

So it's still essentially a 30 point swing in passer rating. I agree that it would be interesting to see if other notable QB/WR combos would be similar.
there are 4-5 plays
jestersdead : 2/13/2018 9:06 am : link
where he catches with 3 defenders closing on him and they have a chance to make a play but his acceleration is incredible. For 98% of WRs those are 6-7 yard gains but his ability to separate from the defender and go 0-60 is ridiculous

I took a look at Matt Ryan & Julio Jones to give us a point of reference (it was easier than Roethlisberger and Brown, because Ryan hasn't missed any games during Jones' career so I wouldn't have to cross reference both of their respective gamelogs):

Non-Julio: 67.4%; 125-57 TD-INT; 94.42 rating; 7.02 Y/A; 10.42 Y/C
Tgt-Julio: 63.2%; 43-18 TD-INT; 102.96 rating; 9.79 Y/A; 15.48 Y/C

So the variance for Ryan between when he throws to Jones vs. other receivers isn't nearly as significant as it is for Manning w/ Beckham (8 pts vs. 30). I think that highlights a few things:

1) Beckham's talent relative to other receivers (both on the Giants' roster as well as the league in general) is actually underrated.
2) Ryan seems to take more chances when throwing to Jones (jump balls, etc.) likely due to his size, leading to a lower completion percentage to Jones than to other receivers.
3) Either the Giants' secondary receivers are significantly worse than the Falcons', or Beckham's presence helps cover up the flaws of the rest of the Giants' offense (including Eli, to some degree), or some combination of both.

In any case, specific to Beckham, anyone who looks at the variance in Eli's numbers with him vs. any other receivers on the roster needs to have their head examined if they believe the Giants should get rid of OBJ.
grrr
giantfan2000 : 2/13/2018 12:43 pm : link
I still gets me mad at that unsportsmanlike penalty after the Ravens TD

OBJ was out of field of play when he took off his helmet and ran out of field of play to Giants sideline .. he was never on field of play with his helmet ..
but they threw the flag anyway..

and that flag almost cost us game ..
I've been trying to figure out
UConn4523 : 2/13/2018 1:13 pm : link
what's so off about Julio Jones for years now. I still don't understand his low TD totals, its actually quite remarkable. The double/triple teams he sees aren't any more (probably less) than Beckham sees.

Wow. Good stuff GD. Thanks for doing your homework. Well there you have it JC. Odell is a phenom. I don't understand why people want to get rid of him for unknown draft picks. The guy missed all of training camp and the first 4 games of the season as a rookie, caught the game winning TD in his first game and put up over 1200 yards and 12 TDs. I will say it again, in my 20 years as a Giants fan, he is by far the most talented player I have seen on this team. Watching him dominate the league on another team in his prime years would be such a kick in the balls.
Thanks GD, appreciate the efforts.

Where are you gathering this information from?

That's some amazing stuff. I know it's taboo to call one of your own players the best in the league, but Odell is the best WR in football. There is nobody else with his skillset and talents. He's not perfect, but he's the best in the biz for sure.

It's all from Pro Football Reference. Most of it is pretty easy to compile - just subtract the WR's numbers from the QB's numbers for the same time period, and then remove the QB's stats for any games that the WR missed. The only tricky one is the INTs for WR targets - you just get that from the "plays" menu on the WR's profile page (it has to be done year by year).

They also have a QB rating calculator that you can use once you have the stats netted out for w/ and w/o the WR that you're looking at.
