Why is it assumed that Rosen won't go #1 to the Browns?

Jolly Blue Giant : 2/11/2018 6:07 pm
It's hard to find a mock draft that has Rosen going #1 to the Browns. His statement regarding getting picked by the "right" team never singled out Cleveland.

Quote:
"I'd rather be a lower pick at the right team than a higher one at the wrong team,'' Rosen said Saturday at the Cactus Bowl media day as the Bruins prepared to play Tuesday in the Cactus Bowl tonight against Kansas State, per Josh Weinfuss of espn.com.

The answer came in response to a question about whether he feels strongly about playing for certain teams, but not specifically about the Browns.

I wouldn't be surprised if he clarifies his statement as we get closer to the draft. Would that change your opinion as to where he gets drafted?

Cleveland.com has an article a couple of weeks ago stating that he should be the pick for the Browns.

Why Rosen is the Obvious Choice for the Browns - ( New Window )
Because people running mock drafts don't know anything

and just put it together to generate hits towards their website or it gives talking heads something to talk about during the dead time of the year.

I always find Walter Football way off. I also hate that website that does mock drafts. I think it is Fan Speak. Every time a poster on here posts one of their mocks it is so unrealistic.

I notice their mocks are always very different from most. However, most mocks are way off as well.
Just guessing here

He will be asked this question again. My guess is he says he would be happy to play for any team that picks him. Mock drafts will see this as a change of heart when it was ever an issue to begin with.

The new GM supposedly was part of an article with anonymous GMs in November and he was outed by the author as tbe Exec who said they would not draft Rosen over character concerns. Dorsey has recently denied it was him.

They just hired Scot McCloughan as a Draft consultant who recently was asked what QB he would take on live radio and he quickly and emphatically stated Mayfield.

Those two things seem to signal Rosen wont go 1

At least not be me.

Rosen is the best QB in this draft so the rumors will swirl about him and the other "elite" in about another month...
Perhaps because they feel Darnold has the higher ceiling...

even though Rosen may be the most NFL ready now.
Rosen

to me is the best QB prospect in the draft and when you are the top QB prospect or even close to it you will get consideration at the #1 pick. Cleveland could very well take him, who the hell knows

Is exactly what Cleveland needs. No veteran QB presence to mentor a young QB.
Because they are taking a RB with the #1

Won't know whether they sign a veteran until after free agency.

Unless he bombs interviews or tests reveal an issue with his shoulder I don't think Rosen falls past 4. If he is available with the 3rd or 4th pick several teams will be trying to trade up to get him before the Broncos pick. It was reported that the Jets will be aggressive on draft day to get their QB. I could see them trading with the Colts for the #3 pick to get Rosen if Rosen is available. The Colts have so many holes and they will almost certainly try to trade down to accumulate more picks.
I have changed course on Rosen

For me the #2 pick would be either Darnold or Rosen. I am surprised that few realize just how young these two are.

Really? Could that just be misdirection? I remember reading last year that Hue Jackson and co had given up on Kizer as the future starting QB.
I think it’s based mostly on comments Rosen made
Section331 : 2/11/2018 9:30 pm : link
that some saw as veiled shots at CLE (I think they were), and this idea that Darnold has a higher upside, which I disagree with. Darnold is the better athlete, but I think many underrate Rosen’s athleticism, and you still have to throw th ball to be a good NFL QB. Rosen is a much better thrower, IMO.

Unless, of course, they are deliberately blowing smoke to keep everyone guessing
'this idea that Darnold has a higher upside'...
Torrag : 2/11/2018 9:48 pm : link
...I don't think that's it. It has more to do with Rosen carrying higher risk both in the character and health department. Although I personally believe Darnold will be the best QB out of this Draft, part of that includes the mental and durability aspect of grading him.
I think we’ll be lucky with either
aimrocky : 2/11/2018 10:09 pm : link
Darnold or Rosen. I prefer Rosen but it’s by a very slim margin. I think this was a very good year to have the floor give out.

Sounds like a team pumping up his value so they can trade him once they draft Darnold.
Makes Sense
Samiam : 2/11/2018 10:19 pm : link
You’re coming off a winless season and will more than likely draft a QB. It makes sense to me that they would draft the most pro ready QB assuming no injury or character concerns even if another QB has a higher ceiling long term. Wouldn’t say this except the coaching staff and front office need to win at least a few games and Rosen might give them the
best shot.

Kizer was always supposed to be a project. He won the coaching staff over to get the chance to start, didnt mean he was fully ready or his development excelerated. They threw him to the wolves with no weapons.

New GM didnt pick Kizer though. He wont be the reason they pass on Rosen/Darnold.

I think the Browns are more likely to trade away the pick...
Milton : 2/12/2018 2:51 am : link
...to a team (the Jets?) that wants Rosen than select him themselves. But I expect the Browns to keep the pick and draft either Darnold, Mayfield, Barkley, or Chubb. Staying put means the Browns are guaranteed to come away from the draft with two out of those four players, trading away the pick to a team looking to leapfrog the Giants in a quest for Rosen would mean the Browns can be guaranteed only one out of the four. It's not as if the Browns need more draft picks.

Why do I think Rosen won't be the top QB on the Browns board? The difference between Rosen's skill set and that of Darnold's and Mayfield's is mitigated by the WCO that Cleveland plays, enough so that it makes sense to draft the prospect who wants to be there (and is also probably a better fit with the fanbase in terms of outspokenness and jersey sales).

Rosen may not be dead set against going to the Browns, but I think he has his heart set on going to the Giants. Here's the full context of what he said on the subject...

"I think the teams know more than I do in the sense of where I'd best fit," he said. "I might be a bit of a unique personality, so hopefully they can pick me a part and if a team really feels that I'm their guy, hopefully they'll go and get me.

Quote:
“I don’t know. It’s what my coaches tell me. My advice from Coach [Jim] Mora and Coach [Jedd] Fisch was don’t be fake when you talk to people because you don’t want surround yourself with people who enjoy and want to be around a separate self that you’re pretending to be. Be authentic, be real, and that’s one of the biggest piece of leadership advice I’ve ever gotten is to be authentic and be real, because you have to be the same guy every day and it’s hard to be someone you’re not every day.

“When it comes to the draft process, I’m going to be — I’m not going to say anything stupid — but I’m going to be my authentic, true self and hopefully someone in an organization says ‘That’s my guy.’ I’ve gotten along with Coach Fisch really well. Coach Mora really got to know my personality to find a really good coordinator that I’d mesh with, and hopefully in the NFL I find that right team that really thinks like they found a good match for me.”

Yeah, 2 SB wins - who would want that?

You are the single worst poster on BBI. I can't wait for your first post next season when you root for an Eli head injury again. How you haven't been banned is beyond me. You suck.

Maybe so, but they tried to trade for AJ McCarron, and Hue Jackson made a fool out of himself by posing for pictures with McCarron after the Bengals game. I think Jackson believes McCarron is the QB he can win with. Hopefully for the Browns sake, the new GM will have more sense.

then why did they yank him in and out of games throughout the season? And why did the coaching staff trade for McCarron mid-season, getting so upset when the front office (IMO purposely sabotaged deal) didnt put the trade through, that several lost their jobs as a result?

Doesnt sound like a staff that "loves" Kizer. At a minimum they want to hedge their bet there and bring in some competition.
I think because

If not for the numerous concussions. He has a ton of ability, string accurate arm and great mechanics. He may never be the ironman that Eli has been but his talent is undeniable.
