Rotten Tomatoes is having to deal with 2 things regarding this movie
eclipz928 : 2/12/2018 7:29 pm : link
The fake negative reviews originating from some social media campaign specifically targeting Disney/Marvel films, and also the cockroaches coming out of the woodwork to post racist comments/reviews on their website.

Unfortunately this is where we're at as a country right now - people thinking the best use of their time and free speech should be to try and "bring down" a comic book movie.

It's a huge waste of time, Black Panther is going to make a shit load of money, and looks to be pretty good.

I don't know what the rage is about this movie
Knineteen : 2/12/2018 8:35 pm : link
I don't doubt it will be a good movie and make a ton of money, but the general audience has never even heard of the Black Panther.

And even though it's a spin-off movie, there's really no integration with the MCU. Klaue? He was in Avengers 2 for all of 5 minutes.

Any anticipation can be attributed to the character appearing in Civil War. Other than that, I don't see what the hype is all about.

The lack of expectations probably help the movie. Very few folks have a pre-conceived notion of the character which may let the movie just be a more natural experience because you don't spend half the time fighting your expectations and can just enjoy it.

First of all the demographic for this film will be much greater than your average Marvel movie goer (not unlike how Wonder Woman succeeded with women). Not to mention this is an award winning director/writer and cast. Then take into account the hype from the trailers and early reviews and you have yourself a full on rage.

No integration with the MCU???

Not only is this a lead into the next Avengers film but Wakanda, from the trailers, plays a huge role in Infinity War.

Not to mention, both Winter Soldier and Cap are currently in Wakanda, they'll have some role to play in the Black Panther film that will lead up to Avengers.

Any anticipation can be attributed to the character appearing in Civil War. Other than that, I don't see what the hype is all about.

There's a few reasons why the anticipation is high for this movie.

1. It's Marvel. The studio has built up enormous capital by having so many successful and well received movies, including the most recent 2 (Thor 3 and Guardians 2). People have now come to expect these movies to be top notch.

2. Effect of Guardians of the Galaxy. Quite simply, if Marvel was able to make a set of obscure comic book characters into one of their most entertaining movies, then there is trust that they will pull it off again with an even less obscure character. Additionally, as someone here already alluded to, there's excitement in the unknown. For most people there's something left to be discovered with this character - unlike say Superman or Spiderman where people know those stories well and will not see too many fresh, stimulating iterations of them.

3. Last stop before Avengers Infinity War. Black Panther is also getting some "residual hype" from the next Avengers movie that will be following it. People are treating this as a prelude to the bigger event, assuming the events that occur will lead right up to where the next Avengers begin. Really any movie that Marvel would have placed in this spot in February would have received enormous buzz for that reason alone.

4. The character's introduction in Civil War has created interest. Yes, Boseman and the Black Panther only had a few moments of screen time, but it was impactful. In those few moments we saw quite a bit of depth and as a superhero he seemed pretty interesting. In isolation maybe there wasn't enough to warrant a standalone movie, but again there has been a trust built up by Marvel that not only can they make the movie good but also make it relevant everything that has and will transpire in the MCU.

5. It has cultural significance. I don't believe it can be overstated how huge a deal it is that a big budget film is featuring a lead black actor, with a majority black cast and black director. There really isn't much precedent for it and it may have a lasting impact on the film industry if it is as successful as it is expected to be. And of course people want to be a part of history, which explains the advance ticket sales - and I think that will also include some people who don't care about such things that will still be interested to go see something "different" on screen.

6. The trailers were cool. The special effects look amazing, it features fantastic actors, there appears to be a lot of action, and the soundtrack sounds great (especially if you like hip hop/ Kendrick Lamar). Put all of these things together and it's easy not only to see why there is so much rage around this movie, but the potential for it to have an enormous return at the box office.

havent had much other characters from the MCU. This isnt any different then:

Ant man - Falcon i guess, who cares
Dr. Strange
Guardians of the Galaxy - No other MCU characters except i guess Thanos for 7 seconds.

The movie will tie into the MCU plenty im sure, thats what the Marvel movies do. They dont have to include a ton of MCU characters in every movie. I think the spiderman and THor 3 models is what we will get moving forward where its a couple big MCU characters in each movie, but an origin one like this i get why they didnt feel the need to try to slam in Captain America.

Tremendous film. Michael B Jordan was awesome, even though he was really the supporting actor.

The question of what responsibility does a superpower nation (though in this case, no one knows they are a superpower) have for the rest of the world runs through the movie and the leaders are forced to wrestle with the answers.

Visually, the CG was fantastic and the action was constant. I think I might see it again after the opening weekend to check what I missed.
Really good movie

MBJ as the villain was fantastic. First compelling villain I've seen in a super hero movie in a while. There was a lot of complexity and depth to him to the point where I was almost rooting for him. Don't usually get that

Visually beautiful, great effects, some genuinely funny moments, and an interesting story that touches on some compelling themes and questions.

Not surprised considering the talent involved, but this delivered on the hype.

that a handful of the origin movies dont have a ton of characters from the MCU. Who was in Dr Strange? GOTG? Ant man (one scene with the falcon), etc.. Not every movie is going to be Avengers or Civil War. When introducing a new character you dont need to slam in a bunch of other people. Also not even sure why this matters? So the movie can only be good if there is a bunch of characters you already know? I dont want to see Cap or Hulk show up in every single marvel movie.

Right?

I haven't really followed this movie very closely because I'm only marginally interested in the MCU... I've enjoyed the Captain America movies but that's about the extent of it. But somehow, I just KNEW that there'd be outrage and indignation from the obvious parties about this movie. A few quick Google searches corroborated this but I didn't pat myself on the back for making an accurate prediction, because it's basically like predicting a sunrise.
There's plenty of reasons for hype.
Heisenberg : 2/16/2018 3:53 pm : link
Marvel has the strongest brand in movies, along with Pixar. People are excited to see what they do next, regardless of how connected it is to other movies.

Black Panther was bad-ass in Civil War, so even folks who didn't know or care about the character could be excited to see a whole movie about him and his world.

The trailers look great.

The viewers who have seen it say it's great.

The reviewers who have seen it have said it's great.

It's not like a movie had to have a huge MCU character to be big. GOTG, as noted above, is the perfect example.

Now, I can understand if none of that convinces you to be excited. But to deny that other people can/should be excited is just plain weird.

I saw it last night, it lives up to the hype. Solid acting all the way around and a coherent, tight story.

Loved the female leads. Letitia Wright stole every scene with Boseman and Freeman. Lupita Nyong’o has tremendous charisma. And Danai Gurira brought depth to a character that could have been one dimensional.

The film was visually stunning. And that kid from the Wire was a great villain.
Great movie

What a great, fun filled, action packed spectacle.

Visual FX were amazing. Actors and actresses were all well cast and compelling. Storyline was very interesting.

The scenes in South Korea really came off well.

Guardians Vol. 1 is still my favorite MCU movie, but this is definitely one of the best in the genre.

Very, very good. Probably the best comic book superhero movie I've seen besides the Dark Knight. I think it's being slightly over-hyped because art criticism now takes into account whether a piece of art advances a certain worldview and set of politics, but I still think it's pretty great. Definitely recommend. (I do have one or two minor nits. 1. Michael B. Jordan over-acted in the first half hour / hour of the movie. 2. One of the plot twists seemed a bit over the top for me, but w/e, I'm not one of those Star Wars fanboys.)
$218 million projected debut. Possibly higher.

Personally I liked it 3rd, only behind the first Thor and Wonder Woman. I liked the woman actors (especially Wright), Jordan, and Boseman (who I think is a really good actor). I've liked him in everything I've seen. The one actor I did't like is Kaluuya, the guy from Get Out. He seems to be the same character each time.

All in all a must see. My only criticism, if it is one, is the over-hype.
