Thought on why beat writers are not breaking stories

Reale01 : 2/13/2018 12:33 pm
It seems like Gettleman runs a tight ship. The beat writers sources are from within the Giants organization and they are not leaking news. The early "leaks" seem to be coming from outside the organization where the national guys have better contacts and sources. Most likely a good thing.
I would argue that Kim Jones is almost a beat writer

She's a national reporter for NFLN, but the majority of her news is about the Giants since she's based on NJ.

this carries over to the draft and teams don't leap frog us to get the player we are targeting. The 2016 draft was so frustrating.
Most definitely a good thing

Some organizational control on keeping internal thoughts, intents and actions inside, until the moves are completed. This will pay dividends in Free Agency and in the draft.

Refeshing.
They're also probably still deep in evaluations

and figuring out the blueprint.
We likely lost Conklin

and others because of a loose lips FO.
Our roster id poor along the entire OL and LB and most of the backups.
The next year or 2 are NOT for a loose lips FO.
Interest in Norwell is a given under the total circumstance but other than that it's best to keep EVERYBODY guessing on everything...at least thrum April.
Kim Jones is exceptional

in her reporting. I think beat writers aren't willing to take the risk on being wrong in this town.

Really? They are always wrong. But that isn't reporting. There is nothing worse than prediction articles. It is just a waste. Report on the facts. There is nothing wrong with speculating and doing research on multiple candidates for a position. That is perfectly acceptable. It is articles like Myers constantly ripping the organization over losing Patricia which is all B.S.
Post Super Bowl lull.

They're on vacation. Supply is adjusted to demand. Not everyone is awaiting Giants' news, 24/7. Editors/producers assign work dependent upon anticipated reader/veiwership.

Kim Jones is great. She is always clear about when she is speculating and when she is reporting. She never plays the unnamed sources game, and she does not appear to be concerned with being the first with the story, but getting the story as right as possible. Also, if anyone has ever heard her guest host on the radio, she has a lot of depth. Total professional.

Does this include Gary Meyers?

You are stupid if you believe that. We lost on COnklin cause other franchises saw the same talent and simply knew giants needs. Simple as that.

Many BBI posters say the same damn annoying thing. You ASSUME the Giants coveted Floyd + Conklin while never seeing their board or hearing a statement of fact from Giants brass.

Crazy posts go on to claim Reese & Co. let our preferences to be known (leaked) and therefore other teams jumped ahead in order to select the Giant's pick. Yeah, right. You drop your whole draft board & scouting department just for the sake of snagging the Giant's pick. Get a grip.
I've covered Hollywood, which is similar in some ways.

Here's some insight on what it is to be a beat reporter covering an organization doing hiring.

Unlike regular business reporting, there aren't a lot of public filings or objective sources to work from. Public corporations have to do a lot of FCC filings, but that's not so true for the Giants. SEC filings wouldn't help you with coaches and free agent signings and such anyway.

So it's "access journalism" -- you get info from whoever knows and will talk to you: Team employees, from the agents' and lawyers' offices, from the players (and their families, I guess), and from the league office. Maybe the coaching staff once they're settled in anc . Maybe sometimes you can learn something from legal filings and such, depending on the thing you're covering.

As a beat writer, you do your daily check-ins with your sources. Your best sources are usually the reps. They will leak that their clients are "in talks" or "in negotiations" or "in advanced talks" or some such thing. (In Hollywood, those things all mean something subtly different.)

You talk to these people knowing they have an agenda. Frequently there's horse-trading involved. Agents want to know what you've heard, and you want to know what they've heard. That might be true of team employees, too. Possibly the league office but not so much.

Sometimes people will use you to plant stories for their own reasons. That happens. Sometimes your sources are lying. Sometimes they're just wrong, or their information is outdated, or shit just happens.

Oftentimes insiders will talk to you "on background," meaning you can't quote them or say where you heard this, but you can use this information to guide your reporting. I expect a lot of Giants insiders give info to beat reporters on background. (A lot of people confuse "on background" with "off the record." Off-the-record means that as far as printing something, basically this conversation never happened. You may tell your editor what you heard, but you can't print it -- unless you get it somewhere else. That's why a lot of beat writers clearly know more than they're allowed to print. People tell them stuff off the record.)

The team is probably not going to be a good source of information right now, in part because the Gettelman regime is so new and I'm sure everyone's very close-mouthed. Shurmur and most of his coaches are new to the Giants and I doubt they have relationships with Giants beat writers, so that sourcing is probably all dried up for now. Free agency hasn't started, so player agents aren't going to have much. It's pretty much down to coaching hires and draft strategy, and both those things are closely held. Only Gettelman's team knows draft strategy. Only Gettelman's team, the coaches being hired and their reps know the coaching hires. I wouldn't expect to hear much from any of them.

Bottom line: Not a lot of news to break, hardly any sources for scoops, I wouldn't expect a lot of exclusives from the beat writers for a while.
