NFT: Ok my turn...looking for a new phone

Jints in Carolina : 2/14/2018 7:22 pm
I have had an Apple phone for years and now it is time to ditch the 6+. It has become slow and unusable. Is it true Apple intentionally slowed older phones down so that would force people to buy new ones? Mine sure as hell slowed down.

So phone gurus I ask you this....should I just upgrade to an iPhone 8 or X, or should I go Android? Some of the Moto phones look good.

Hellllllllp.

I went with the 8

From the 6, very happy with it. The X is too big and didn’t need the extra crap it comes with. I’ve also wanted to switch to Android for years but I’m far too lazy to do it. Also just got an Apple Watch which works incredibly well with the 8.
Ugh my 6plus has gone to shit also
DennyInDenville : 2/14/2018 7:31 pm : link
I might actually goto the Apple Store and try to get a replacement

This thing is a POS suddenly... takes forever to charge and maxes out at 95%, battery drains incredibly fast.

Speeds slightly slower, main issue is this pathetic battery . Sad.

Uconn - sell me on the Watch. Just picked up one for my wife and I figured I would observe and take it for a spin before committing myself.

DiD - I recently got the battery replaced on mine and it has made a world of difference.

Still an obsolete phone at this point but hey, it helps

That's what I'm hoping for. Just want to squeeze out another 9 months or so out of it
Apple did slow phones down intentionally
Jim in Fairfax : 2/14/2018 7:42 pm : link
But not to force owners to buy new ones. When batteries start losing power and capacity, sudden voltage drops can cause phones to shut down suddenly even when the battery meter reads plenty of capacity remaining. To prevent this, they reduce the power to the processor. Replacing the battery restores the phone to full power. The latest IOS update also allows you to override the power reduction.

If you want to try or switch to an Android phone, look at the Google Pixel phones. They’re probably the most similar to an iPhone experience.

My wife came home with hers two weeks ago and I told her I’d never get one. I then saw what she was able to do with it and bought one this past weekend. I can’t lie, I love the thing. I’m trying to get back into a fitness routine and it does an extremely good job of accurately tracking heart rate, calories, steps, floors cloned, etc. you can set personal goals as well. At the office it’s nice to stay in the loop without having my phone in a meeting. I didn’t eat the LTE but I can make and answer calls if I’m in a room separate from where my phone is.

I’m having a hard time finding something I don’t like about it after thinking the concept was so stupid a couple years ago.

REPLACE THE BATTERY
AnnapolisMike : 2/14/2018 8:48 pm : link
I bought my daughter a 6+. Bought a new battery at the same time. Tested the phone with a speed testing application, changed the battery and tested the phone again. The processing speed of the phone nearly doubled. Apple has these things slowed WAY down when the battery gets old.

Unless you phone is a beat up piece of shit...try replacing the battery first. You can buy one and do it yourself. I replaced my daughters battery in about 30 minutes.

all the new gestures are very intuitive, the facial recognition unlock is just as good as touch if not better, camera is great. I also upgraded from the 6 so it seemed like a big advancement.

Anyway, I bought the Samsung Note 8 as it's currently $250 off. I think it's pretty awesome.

I'm still riding it out with my 7+

The battery life isn't as good as it was when I first got it where I was getting like 2+ days on a single charge, but it's still holding plenty of charge to get me through a full day without needing to put it back on.

I think I want to just hang onto this one for a bit, though - I'm not really dying to get an 8. I'd probably get the X if anything.

What's the easiest way to replace my battery if I choose to go that route?

I hate to be that guy, but I'm gonna ask them to do it for free or upgrade me to a 7 for pennies on the dollar.

Apparently they need your phone for 2-3 days and that's a big inconvenience

Yeah, I think I'm going to wait a bit - hopefully in the middle of the year the wait times will die down at least a little between everyone rushing to do it now and those who will be rushing to do it at the end of the year before they can't anymore.

One of the links up there actually says it can be 5 days (or more)

I hate typing this sentence.. but things would be pretty difficult if I were without my phone for that long. Sucks to be so reliant on technology, but it's just reality for a lot of people.

I believe that as long as you make an appointment in advance for battery replacement at an Apple store, they will do it while you wait. Should take about an hour or so,
I have a lot of apple products including a mac, macbook, and ipad.

I cannot go back to Apple's phones. Their products for a period of time were better than everything out there. Now? I cannot say that. I have a Samsung Galaxy and love it. My family memebers around me have iphones. I don't get the love fest. I think most of it has to do with being familiar with it. Same for ipads. I still like my computers though.

Check on the website to see if you are eligible for the free replacement. Both me and my wife were. It took an hour for them to do it.

You’re comparing a phone from 4 generations ago. You can’t replace the battery in seconds on a Galaxy S6, S7, S8 or S9.

NoPeanutz : 2/15/2018 10:19 am : link
Great phone. ~$200, so I'm not afraid to drop it or let my kids play with it.
Battery lasts all day and charges very quickly. (I usually have around 40% when I get home at the end of the day).
It already survived an accidental swim in the toilet without an issue (although it does not claim any water resistance, but previous generations were water proof).
Camera is eh, but good enough.
I got the 8 Plus

I had a Galaxy years ago but hated it bc of the Android skin. Since then, I've only used Nexus or Motos.
I'm sure all of the skins have gotten better since then, but if I can avoid LG, Samsung etc, I will try.

Thanks - this would be much better.

I actually had this done back when I had a 5 - they had that thing where they figured out that 5's that were manufactured during a specific time period had battery issues. They ran diagnostics on my phone, said I was eligible and replaced it in like 45 minutes.

It's definitely a familiarity thing - I also like the "neatness" of having all Apple stuff since it's so easy to access everything from any of the devices. I realize you can still probably do this with an Android phone - its just easier this way.

I also just don't need a lot of these cutting edge features.

The vast majority of time I spend on my phone, I'm just sending texts, checking e-mails, using the web, and using a few apps.

I do care about camera and display. I'm picky about resolution, but I think the iPhones keep up relatively well in that regard.

I haven't used the newer Galaxy models so I don't know if this is still a thing, but some of the older ones felt so flimsy. Like they were made of cheap plastic. The construction just didn't feel sturdy and it bugged me for some reason. The phone literally just peeled apart with a few clicks.
I'm an Android guy - I just think you get more choices

and a bigger bang for your $ than with Apple. I realize Apple is like a cult though so it really doesn't matter (my kids have Apple). However to me the Samsung, LG, or Moto phones are all great, priced cheaper, and full of features.

arcarsenal : 2/15/2018 12:29 pm : link
LOL, I never really understood the "cult" thing - people with Androids are constantly accusing Apple owners of being cultish but is there really any difference?

People act like we're choosing sides in a civil war here. They're just phones.

I do think a lot of the Android versatility is cool, more options are great. For me, I just don't need a lot of them so I'm good with what I've got. I don't find that my iPhone is incapable of doing things I need it to, so it works for me.

There’s certainly an Apple fanboy cult, but passing off all users as cultists is absurd. There are nearly 100 million iPhones in use in the US.

Most people own them because they are well built, simple to use and have good support. And notably they are very secure and receive receive regular updates. Those are related: most Android phones are beholden to the manufacturer and phone carrier for updates, something that becomes increasingly rare once the next model releases.
I had the 6
giantsfan227B : 2/15/2018 1:37 pm : link
I hear you with the complaints of it slowing and battery problems. Before that story came out I knew they were doing that. Seemed everytime a new phone came out, they would release new Ios version and then things would start running poorly.

I went with the X. I like it but honestly, it is not as great as I thought it would be. Anything is an upgrade from the 6. My reasoning to go with the X was why take a phone (8) that basically isn't much better than the 7 and pay a ton. I felt take the latest (and greatest?) and if the 11 or whatever isn't better at least I have the latest technology or close to it. The face recognition is good although I found in the beginning it failed a lot. The little talking emoji's that track your face is a cute gadget. I don't use all the features of the camera although it is a good camera.

Regardless of what you pick I would say stay in the Apple universe. I switched from the 3GS to Samsung S3 and with work had an S5. I just found that not everyone gets the software upgrades at same time. Certain cell companies get it before others. Samsung might customize it more or less than HTC or other providers meaning app creators have multiple versions. I found apps crashed a lot more on Android and ate the crap out of the battery. I just like how seemless things work on Apple like texting, Facetime etc. If you switch, you have to switch to skype and SMS texting. Might not sound like much until you realize how many people are on Apple at least in the US. Also to be honest, I feel Google tracks everything you do. I don't use Chrome or really any of their products. I have a gmail email from years ago which I never look at. unfortunately I do have to use Youtube from time to time. I like Firefox or DuckDuckgo which don't track you.

Good luck.
