NFT: help w/ buying new car?

huygens20 : 2/14/2018 7:44 pm
folks, would love to get the experience of the forum.

this is the first time im buying a new car.

looking at the mazda cx5. I was reading online that the new crv has too small of an engine for cold weather, plus i like the quieter/less button look of the cx5. will get dinged on the gas mileage differences.

it's going to be all cash, with a trade in (not worth much). I;m not necessarily looking for the best deal $ wise (that'd be nice) but something that's just fair.

basically what are those extra add on scams i need to avoid? I'm just so confused about the destination, and TTL, and all that other stuff. Some places seem to have different destination charges?? What's the bare minimum? so that I know what's extra that's being added on thats bullshit and can decide if i actually want it.

and im praying i can simply just do this deal online and walkin and sign and walk out with the car. is it common for these dealerships to change terms of deal from online to when i walk in and sign??

I'm really not into driving to different dealerships like i did with my first car.
You can.get a firm price online

But it won’t be walk in, sign, get the keys and drive away. Even at the best dealerships, your going to spend @ 3 hours there while the car is prepped and you go through all the paperwork.
Cx5 Diesel

Has been promised since early summer of 2017. It should be released very shortly. Diesel, should address your comment of lack of horsepower, via the extra torque.

I very much enjoy my 2017 Mazda 3. Enjoy yours, as well.

You will spend 3 or so hours, as Jim stated.

The price starts to creep up when the service warranty is discussed and those sort of options. Do feel free to get up and walk out, if you need to. There are dealer shipss that will ship the car to you. You can deal with then online and set everything up.

Good luck
One thing to keep in mind

Is that your purchase of the new car and your sale of your current car (trade-in) are really two separate transactions. Even if your trade-in isn't worth much, go in knowing how much would be reasonable for you to get for your car. If you don't live far from a CarMax, you could even get a ballpark offer from them before even going to the dealership where you will buy your new car. I mention this because if you negotiate a good deal for the new car, some dealerships will try to screw you on your trade-in to make up for it. If you know what you can get from CarMax and the dealership won't offer you that, you know you could go back to CarMax and sell it there. If you don't have a CarMax, do some online research (Edmunds, etc.), do an honest assessment of your car's condition and at least know the minimum you will accept for it and hold to it. It's unlikely they would let you walk (and you can seem likel you're willing to) over your trade-in, especially if you're doing an all cash deal. Good luck!
IT really doesn’t need to be stressful

ESPECIALLY once you’ve decided on the exact car you want.

Go to carsdirect.com (no need to give your info) and pick out the exact car and options you want. Bam, there’s the highest price you will pay for the car. Done.

Use Costco or BJs or other similar car buying service. Same process. But use a throw away email address and a google voice phone number.

Email a bunch of dealerships, get their best out the door price. Nowadays dealerships fight giving a quote via email anymore. So call them after the email, don’t give 5em your info though. Get their best number.

Remember most dealerships give a couple K cash back for financing through their lender, so consider financing it but MAKE SURE THERES NO EARLY PRE PAY PENALTY anywhere in 5e fine print. Finance it, save the $3k or whatever it is. Then pay it off in a month.

Trade in - agree with a car max quote or something similar. Let the dealership match it or trade it in wherever you get the best quote.

EY less likely you are to walk without giving in and buying from them.

Just never step foot into the dealership till you are 100% ready to buy. And within 15 minutes from walking in it needs to be agreed upon or your walking out. Salesman know the longer they keep you in there

Good luck
maybe I got lucky

but my first car buying experience was in November.

My car in high school parents bought for me, and then when I graduated college in 2010 they bought another car for me. I got rid of that one in November and bought a brand new GMC Acadia.

I knew exactly what I wanted, did shopping online and had an exact number i wanted to be at for my monthly payment and i was up front with the dealerships about that. Some jerked me around trying to get me to come in saying they would find a way to get me to that number, but one place guaranteed that they were at that number and they got the car in that i wanted, I had specific color that was an odd ball that they had to bring in from out of state.

I drove an hour to get it, I already got my financing pre-approved through an app online before i got there, and i was driving home 45 minutes later. Couldn't believe how painless it was.

3 hours does seem like the time people normally spend, but maybe doing enough homework prior to going might be able to shave some of that time off or i just got really lucky.

Have you thought about financing the car anyways with car loan rates pretty low and not just paying cash? If it were me i'd take the loan and invest the money

Don't Ever Negotiate Based on Monthly Payments - ( New Window )
it worked out fine for me
MookGiants : 2/14/2018 11:20 pm : link
i got the exact terms I wanted, got a few things thrown in on top of it, and they got me the car 6-8 weeks before I would have had it if I bought it locally where I'm from.

My financing didnt come through them and i sold my car privately. So the only thing I had to negotiate was the sticker price pretty much. The place I went to was great to work with, much easier than any of the other places I called and most importantly much cheaper. I couldn't touch the price I got from them anywhere else
We bought through Costco
NoPeanutz : 2/15/2018 10:11 am : link
You tell them the car you want, they tell you where to pick it up at what price. No haggling.
You show up at the dealer, show your Costco card, give them the check, and walk away with the car (9 hours later, because car dealerships are awful).
I used TrueCar for my last purchase
Jeever : 2/15/2018 10:14 am : link
Printed the online offer and took it to one of the listed dealers who have to honor the offer. Handed them the paperwork and was told to pick a car off the lot. The True Car list of options was not complete but the dealer honored the price even though it didn't include the nav system or sunroof.

Sticker price of the car was $27,300. My printout listed the price at $21,200. They honored the price.

With signed paperwork I was in and out with my new car in a little over an hour. No haggling or "I have to talk to my manager" nonsense.
