NFT: Book advice on Mutual fund mix

gmangill : 2/15/2018 7:23 am
i have about 13 years left to work before I retire... I have a healthy balance in my 401k and my wife will get a full pension as a teacher in Ma.

looking for book recommendations on mutual fund mixes

I have mostly stayed heavy in large cap.. next would be Mid cap and small cap. a small amount in specialty (healthcare) and the balance in bonds (about 20% for stability),small cap, and international.

I have never really done the rebalancing thing and realize that I have probably left a lot of money on the table because I haven't. Basically I do not have a model to follow.

so, I am looking to read quite a bit on different mixes, decide on one that I like/feel comfortable with, and just stick to the plan and rebalance annually based on my decision..

so BBI financial wizards.. any rec's on books??

I'd caution against jumping into Bonds with both feet at this time. The Rates are on the move higher, and you don't want to lock in at today's Rate. There are different durations, that behave differently in this Market. Check the Short Term Funds vs the Intermediate and 30-year Bond Funds. The Bogles are a little too dogmatic about Bonds, their Hero John Bogle wrote his treatise years ago during the long Bond Rally. Those concepts may no longer apply in this Market.

Think of the Bond portion of your AA as more of a "Fixed Income" portion. Look into a CD Ladder so that you have a CD maturing every 3 months. There are some "No Penalty" CD's that carry a healthy Rate. Even the Money Market Funds are starting to pay something.
My recommendation is the Bogleheads forum wiki

which lists various books. You are doing things the right way - educate yourself and then follow your own "advice". One thing is for sure - don't listen to one word of strangers on a football forum giving you their specific recommendations. Follow your instincts to educate yourself.
thanks for the info

Re: bonds... to clarify, they are bond funds... and I am not currently putting any more into them, just holding.

Johnny... appreciate the offer and I certainly will take you up on it... right now I am in "learning mode" trying to wrap my head around it.
