Love Tomlinson

next year should be fun to watch with our new DC. Reese stunk but I definitely subscribe to his formula with DTs. Paying for Hankins wasn’t necessary.
For all his faults

Reese really did know how to evaluate DT's. It's too bad that he sucked at evaluating offensive lineman.

Too bad they never stick around.
A bright spot in a lost season

Tomlinson looked better and better as the season went along. The question is, if they do go with a 3-4, how will he do as a 2 gap DE, making the assumption that Snacks plays over the nose.
Good stuff...

My opinion was that he was TOO good at picking DT so he saw little sense in trying to resign them because he could pick another one up "in the next draft". But how many 2nd round picks did he (correctly) pick DT when he could have resigned his own DT and used that 2nd rounder pick to shore up a different part of the team.
Wonder how he compares to Rookie Interior Defender's

From other recent rookies classes...
I've always liked PFF.

Maybe Tomlinson will be the backup NT giving Snacks some breathing room.

So true. I'm always on the fence with some of their metrics.
Really excited to see Bettcher’s defense
Simms11 : 2/15/2018 11:53 am : link
and how guys like Tomlinson fit in.
BBI's never liked Filth...
Rocky369 : 2/15/2018 12:04 pm : link
what's the BBI-take on how much he benefited from those around him? For any other team, particularly NFC East, the consensus is usually along the lines of, well he had such and such protecting him, let's see how he looks on his own. Is it still comparable?

Alternatively, he decided he wouldn't pay big bucks 2nd contracts because he could pick up another one. What he did with the cap savings is another discussion.
Run defense
Giantimistic : 2/15/2018 12:45 pm : link
How are we not better at run defense with how good Snacks and Tomlinson were on the inside. Despite JPP's poor pash rushing he is still a very strong run defender and I thought Vernon was as well. Even our back up d-line I thought were good run defenders. Collins is great supporting run defense. Is it just our failure at the linebacker level?

It's systemic. A high quality run defense that's vulnerable against the pass and is not supported by good offense is going to stay out on the field too long, get tired, and then get beat in the run game.
I still think we'd have a serious D if we
idiotsavant : 2/15/2018 12:53 pm : link
Added a giant nose type DT. True...Harrison is that....and yet also much more...the addition would make the others that much more effective and enable fielding a safety like Mike as the middle will be more off limits run wise with both DTS up front same time.

On first downs an additional giant nose DT enables a greater amount of gap assignment multiplicity or variety without risking smaller DTS getting washed out sideways while attempting one gap attacking.

You already have two of those guys and one of them is tops in the league.

The opportunity here lies in putting players around them who can make plays in other situations. Like rushing the passer consistently, which we haven't done since...seemingly 2011. Adding a FS who can cover ground and play the ball alongside Collins would be nice. And if it isn't asking too much, a LB who can cover backs and TEs.

DT is the one place we seem set.

I would LOVE to know how we could be so good at evaluating talent on one side of the line and yet suck at doing the same for the other side. How is that even possible?

Big detractor of Reese and have to admit that DL was his strong suit. Joseph and Hankins were great picks. But he he would not pay them and tried to replace them with stiffs like Austin and Bromley. Tomlinson looks like another winner and the Snacks pick up was terrific. Think his hire of the blowhard untalented Ross hurt his career big time. Good luck, JR, thanks for the memories

I think we'll find out this draft if the problem was being bad at scouting offensive line, or having a front office that placed more emphasis on other positions. Been well documented that the scouts are not changing but the process or at least the player value system is.
Yes and yes
idiotsavant : 2/15/2018 6:39 pm : link
Mode. Those are on the list as well.

I do think that Darian Thompson
And Adams will improve next year. But eyes open for an opportunity at safety and a unique lb that can cover. But yes, if we plan to field a small lb that can cover weay want some beef up front.

Unleash the snacks. Is what I'm saying. And make the lb/ends better. Also. Nose tackles don't go high,so it's not a huge pick used.

Very good point Ten Ton. I agree and look forward to seeing it all play out.

To do with OL it’s the two left feet statue in the backfield I promise you guys Gods could not keep Eli standing in any pocket. You will see the same problems we saw last year again no matter what you do in FA, draft and UDFA. These guys are not great but are they really that much worse than the Pats linemen?
