NFT: Winds of Winter may never blow

Bill L : 2/15/2018 1:19 pm
or, at least we may all be dead, for get about George, before it's published. Apparently, he's decided to start another Westeros series and will wait until he writes the first volume of that before he lets us read the next volume of ASoIaF

Of course

He's already gotten his big payday with the HBO adaptation. He knows the iron is hot and HBO would jump at another opportunity to adapt a prequel.

Really, I had given up hope of him finishing years ago. On the one hand, I can't blame him. He hit it big. On the other hand, how lazy can you be that you can't finish what you started, keep giving fans the runaround, and need the TV producers to help you unwind the story after you wrote yourself into a corner.

How he hasn't been dropped by his publisher at this point is baffling.
as Modus said I gave up long ago...
Torrag : 2/15/2018 1:44 pm : link
...he bailed on his fans that put him on the map. Unforgiveable really. I've boycotted any and all things that could put a single penny in the man's pocket until/unless he finsihes the written version of Song...not that he'll miss it but it's all a consumer can do.
Yeah, I get it

it's pretty much comedy at this point.
What's funny is I've heard he's already released some chapters
NYG27 : 2/15/2018 1:49 pm : link
I've never read the books but have been told that Martin had release chapters from Winds of Winter as early as 2011. All told there was 7-8 chapters that were released early, so how much more of the book does he have left?

It's worse than that. He claimed that he finished the book a couple of years ago. Those 7-8 chapters he released were originally cut from DoD and were supposed to be a jumping off point to WoW. He has since finished, in 2015 (iirc) and has been doing rewrites.

How can anyone believe anything he says at this point?
Well, fuck.

How is this a surprise?

We were discussing this exact situation two years ago.
writers block

maybe he should just hire the HBO show writers
I may be off
Modus Operandi : 2/15/2018 3:22 pm : link
But perhaps when it became clear that the show would outpace the books - from season 2, basically - perhaps there was an agreement in place that he would not release the final book until after the TV series concluded.

Wouldn't surprise me.

As much as some people bash the HBO writers, I have enjoyed their take on Season 6 and 7. Martin might be wise to get them involved or use their story lines to finish his books.

You know they're using his story right? I mean, they wrote the dialogue, but they basically found out what his plans were for the books, got outlines and then created the last couple seasons from that.

Martin gave them the outline for every major character. Although both sides have said that both their story lines have separated from each other and gone in different directions.

That's where I think the HBO writers can help Martin out and finish his books. They all know what the end game is, it's a matter of actually sitting around and completing that task. The HBO writers are completing that task with season 6, 7 and 8. Which so far, I've liked the direction they've gone with.
He doesn’t “owe” anybody

A thing. I like his books and look forward to the ending, but he owes me nothing. If not for him sitting down to do the lonely work of starting them and writing the series with little hope of the fame and money he got, I’d not have Westeros and be poorer for it. Moreso the TV series, perhaps. If he’s sick of it and decides to never write another, so be it. The series will tell us the end just fine. Some of you mad that this guy won’t do what you want sound ungrateful he did any of it. Plus he knows whatever he does half will say not as good as TV or not as good as the other books...no wonder he’s not into it.

If it came down to the HBO writers helping George finishing the books, I'd rather he just not fucking finish it.

This is what I've thought. Either the last two books get released simultaneously right after the last show airs or they don't get released at all.

I think the same. Once the show became such a mega-hit the obvious move would be to not cannibalize their own story. There's a reason they try to desperately avoid leaks when shooting. Get maximum attention for the TV series and then when the books release there will be a second life as the readers will get to experience the differences in the story.
