Pick 34

Breeze_94 : 2/15/2018 1:34 pm
The Giants have a chance to land a high impact player at the top of round 2. I think they go QB round 1, but there is a chance some really good prospects could be available at 34. Who are some of the guys you like at pick 34?

My list (hope is 1 or 2 of these guys slips):

OT Mike McGlinchey- Not likely to be on the board, but I think there is a chance he slips a bit. His film shows that he struggles against speed at times and can be beat. He is relatively maxed out (5th year senior), and he has some holes in his game. Maybe that makes him fall into the Giants laps in RD 2. He could be a Luke Petigout type for the Giants. Solid starting OT.

EDGE Arden Key- he had an injury plagued season, film wasn't as impressive as 16', but he is a freak in terms of his physical ability. He could be a great addition at 3-4 OLB and has as high a ceiling as anyone in the draft. A lot of mocks have him falling.

EDGE Harold Landry- Same case as Key- great 2016, not as good in 17'. Questions about his size/ability to stop the run, but he could be a dynamic edge rusher for Bettcher if he slips to round 2.

LB Rashaan Evans- all around stud at LB, would be a great fit inside next to Goodson but he can also rush from the edge as he showed at Bama. Projected to go in the 20's though.

OL Billy Price- He will likely go end of round 1, but he is a day 1 starter anywhere on the interior of the OL. He is a bull in the run game and a wall in pass-pro. I think the Giants will look to FA (Norwell, tender Jones) and the mid rounds for the interior OL, but Price is definitely still an option.

other notables: RB Derrius Guice, OT Kolton Miller
Hoping for Braden Smith OL Auburn

Based on SYs recommendation
I'm a fan of

The Southern Border Wall aka Will Hernandez. He is an immovable mountain of a man. Want a clean pocket? Build the wall.
Nice watchlist
Torrag : 2/15/2018 1:39 pm : link
I doubt several of them are there but as you note someone has to slip and slide down the board. Of those you listed I'd run to the podium to draft Key or Evans.

Yea that what I was going for- a guy who could slip and be available there. Like Landon Collins in 15', and Myles Jack in 16' (although he was injured).

I really think there is a chance that 1 or 2 of these guys is available at 34.
Like Evans and Price
uncledave : 2/15/2018 1:45 pm : link
doubt they're there though.

Some other names to consider:
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Taven Bryan
Sam Hubbard
Isaiah Oliver (especially if we lose DRC/Apple)
Chukwuma Okorafor

He is another guy I like, although I'm not as sold as Sy is that he can play LT in the NFL. He has the size/length to do it, so maybe he can- I just don't see many guys go from playing mostly guard at the college level (i know Smith played some RT too) to all of the sudden playing LT in the NFL.
I would be thrilled with
Jay on the Island : 2/15/2018 1:47 pm : link
either Braden Smith or Isaiah Wynn.
Throw Wynn
Andy in Boston : 2/15/2018 1:51 pm : link
the Guard from Georgia in there, although he'll probably go in the 1st round.
I'm looking forward to day 2 since we're so high
adamg : 2/15/2018 1:55 pm : link
like you're saying, some stud is likely to fall into our laps. Even in the third round, one of those running backs that seem unattainable now could drop.
Leighton Vander Esch
Big Rick in FL : 2/15/2018 2:19 pm : link
LB from Boise State is another name to throw out there at 34. He's a stud.
There will be someone
Dankbeerman : 2/15/2018 2:41 pm : link
who everyone is sure will go im the 1st that is somehow still there.

The pick is a good trade spot too depending who slips
If he's there at 34...

...I'm only thinking of one player:

Ronald Jones, RB, USC

He is fantastic and IMO could be the steal of the entire Draft!!!
It is a great pick

I’d like to recreate the 04 draft where the Giants walk out with Eli in the first and then pair with an OL (Snee) to anchor it for a decade (and 2 SBs)

In this case Im hoping for a Josh Rosen pairing with Braden Smith or some other OL like Hernandez or Wynn, etc. that Gettleman likes.
Tyrell Crosby LT Oregon
Rjanyg : 2/15/2018 3:58 pm : link
or Will Hernandez. I think it should be O Line.

Agreed, He would be the athletic coverage ILB for the Giants 3-4 scheme similar to how the Steelers used Ryan Shazier.

Will Hernandez..small school but kid is a stud
.

1. (Ask the boss)
2. (G, OT, DT, RB)
3. (Same list but add LB, S)
4. ( repeat whichever remain)
5. (Add TE to same list)
6. Same
7. Same
Someone good has to fall out of round one.
Ira : 2/15/2018 6:06 pm : link
Focusing on any one player in this situation usually leads to disappointment, but if we draft well, we'll get someone very good.
Lamar Jackson
Bill L : 2/15/2018 6:14 pm : link
Allows us to get the superlative player in round one (Barkley) and sates the “get a QB, any QB”crowd. Win-win.
Yes.
idiotsavant : 2/15/2018 6:20 pm : link
Barkley in 1 then Jackson in 2 would be a coup if as advertised on both.

Fun.

Then lines and backers on down.

should be a playmaker or quality OL available.
I think you have to go O-line at 34
larryflower37 : 2/15/2018 8:36 pm : link
Too much top guard /center talent should be available that would make an immediate impact.
If any one of C.Williams, O.Brown or Q.Nelson
est1986 : 2/15/2018 8:52 pm : link
Slips past 20.... I would make some calls.

Tuckrule : 2/16/2018 8:04 am : link
who are you calling? Your brothers and sisters to tell them he slipped?
Your first 3 guys won't be there
jeff57 : 2/16/2018 8:08 am : link
The last 2 might not either.

My choices would be: Price, Wynn, Daniels or Smith. Hernandez, if they don't sign Norwell.

Agreed, even if the Giants sign Norwell they should still take either Smith, Wynn, or Hernandez at 34 then the interior of the offensive line would have gone from a liability to a strength. Wynn and Smith have the added benefit of being able to play OT as well.
A Luke Petitgout type?
GeorgeAdams33 : 2/16/2018 11:29 am : link
WTF does that mean?? Yes, they both played at Notre Dame, but that is about the only similarity besides being a white guy.
Pick 34 is a huge pick for DG
Rjanyg : 2/18/2018 10:46 pm : link
It almost has to be an immediate starter, especially if pick 2 IS a QB. With all the issues on this team we need young production.

I'm thinking OL maybe LB.
I also like Jones
Jay in Toronto : 2/18/2018 11:38 pm : link
he could be there.

Pick 34 should be a BPA, IMO.
I like Harrison Phillips
Milton : 2/18/2018 11:57 pm : link
I know he doesn't fill one of the team's larger holes, but his flexibility as both a DT and a DE would give Bettcher better ability to mix and match the likes of JPP and Vernon to whatever front works best against the particular offense they are facing that week.

He is currently projected to go anywhere from the middle/late first round to the middle of round two. As far as matching the greatest need to the prospects projected to be available with pick 34, we'll get more clarity after free agency. The field is wide open as it stands right now.
If QB is the first pick
madgiantscow009 : 2/19/2018 12:17 am : link
then best OL available has to be a real possibility if he/she is in that tier of talent on their board.

No doubt, but there's always the possibility that a guy whom the Giants have in their top ten falls to the 34th pick and in such a situation you don't want to be tied to an OL even if under normal circumstances you would've been perfectly happy taking that guy with the 34th pick.

In 1997 there was a heated debate in the Giants war room over Ike Hilliard and Tiki Barber for the 7th overall pick. The Giants selected Hilliard and as it turns out, Barber was still available for them in the 2nd round (36th overall). As the story goes, the scout who was championing Barber was still steaming. An exec said to him, "why so glum, we got your guy anyway?" to which the scout responded, "Yeah, but the wrong guy is going to get the big bucks" (I'm paraphrasing, so feel free to try your Google magic if you want the actual story with quotes).

Hope the scout who pushed for Barber is till with the organization
