paid guard in NFL. The article says a Giants source has told Chad Forbes that franchise is very serious about signing Norwell to be highest paid guard.
Its still all just spec until March 14 but I tend to believe it. I think the only thing that will stop Norwell from being a Giants next year is if the Panthers tag him.
sorry no link it was on my facebook feed.
However, put me in the camp that believes this is agent and not NYG driven.
I think it's almost impossible for the Panthers to franchise tag him. They just signed RG Trai Turner to a 4 year 45 million dollar deal. Also both Ryan Kalil & Matt Kalil have big contracts. RT Daryl Williams is playing on a horrible deal so he will probably want a new one soon.
Ryan Kalil has a 9.6 million dollar cap hit this year.
Matt Kalil has a 7 million dollar cap hit this year.
Trai Turner has a 7.7 million dollar cap hit this year.
Daryl Williams has a 2 million dollar cap hit this year.
So they have 26 million tied up to 4 Olineman. Zeitler got 12 million a year last year. So Norwell will probably get 12.5-13 million a year. I doubt they can put that much more into their offensive line.

How many of their coaching hires leaked?
The franchise tag for OL does not designate for which OL position they actually are. So Carolina would be paying LT money for a G. A franchise tag is highly unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.
The Giants aren't "random"
Our GM is the guy who found Norwell in the first place and Mike Shula is our OC now.
Connect the dots.
I doubt that. It's been known for a while that he's going to be the highest paid OG in NFL history. Kevin Zeitler was 27 and never was a Pro Bowler let alone an All Pro. Norwell is 26 and a 1st team All Pro.
The franchise tag will be 14.5 million for Norwell. So I doubt the Panthers put almost 41 million into their 5 starting OL. Especially when they have to resign their All Pro RT soon.
Haha I think they know better than that. Supply and demand, fellas. Quality lineman are very hard to find, great lineman are on the verge of being dinosaurs. So when he hits the market there will be multiple teams fighting for him and he will be paid.
I see some say 'you don't pay a LG that much' and honestly that line of thinking is outdated. The position on the line doesn't matter as much anymore. If you can get a caliber lineman like Norwell, you pay the man.
Gettleman signed Matt Kalil to a 5 year 55 million dollar deal a year ago so he clearly is willing to spend on a FA offensive linemen. He also spent a lot to extend Turner and Ryan Kalil. I believe Ryan Kalil was the highest paid center at the time of his deal.

All they have to do is tag him. Ryan Kalil is in his last year of his contract plus they can move on from any of those guys after next season to make room for the better player in Norwell.
I think what you meant was Gettleman was able to find solid offensive linemen without using high picks on them. He found Norwell as an UDFA, he signed Remmers off a practice squad, and lastly he drafted Trai Turner in the 3rd round and Daryl Williams in the 4th. Hopefully he can still identify solid offensive linemen without using a 1st round pick on them.

They settled for option B head coach wise and option C offensive coordinator wise... so not much good came out of that... but it’s different player wise because there are 100’s of players, harder to guess who likes who but when there are only 5-10 reasonable HC’s available same thing coordinators wise and there are only 5 teams or so competing for the same coach it makes less difference if you know who likes who...
I remember the talk about the Giants interested in OV before he was even made available (he was tagged or something)... who is to say a leak like that did not impact the final cost... other teams heard and drove up the price tag
Jerry Reese is gone.
JAX was very interested in Vernon. We weren't getting him any cheaper than we did regardless of what was or was not out there as far as our interest level.
Perhaps a cheaper option like Josh Kline or Zach Fulton.
Kareem Martin played for Bettcher
Jerry Attachou from the Chargers is also a FA

I don’t believe it was the general manager directly leaking info but someone in the building talks a lot and second hand, third hand info travels fast.

So why isn’t the narrative just the Giants “are interested in Norwell” instead of specifically saying Giants “are interested in marking Norwell the highest paid guard”... that is the part I don’t like to see/hear
Maybe it is total BS thrown at the wall... maybe it’s the Giants getting word to Norwell’s agent so he doesn’t accept a lesser long term deal...

Draft class has some good interior OL. We will need to take one or two big time if we don’t bring in some good FA OL.

Because that headline would generate less clicks.
Do you really believe someone @ NYG HQ is leaking info that they are going to make Norwell the highest-paid OG in football?
C'mon. They're smarter than that. This isn't coming from our FO.

I like Zach Fulton. He has started 46 games for the Chiefs mostly at guard but last season he stepped in for star center Mitch Morse and played well despite never playing center before this season. He is only 26 so he could still continue improving. He would be a good inexpensive option at one guard spot and the other will hopefully be either Braden Smith, Isaiah Wynn, or Will Hernandez.

I should create a clickbait website, it's so easy.
The same exact article was linked a couple of days ago. the only comment on those threads should be "247Sports is absolute shit"

You don't know that they settled for option B at head coach. Stop making definitive statements about things that you have no inside information about.
Eric has specifically said that the Patricia stuff was bad information, and Patricia has said he was never offered the job.
Exactly!!!!
Good point ... hell if I was the competition, I would bid them up with no intention of signing him - just to make sure they paid a higher price and added a bigger dent to their cap. But, for all we know that is what they did say - "highly paid guard"? Maybe the editor got it wrong in the translation? Why would they make any comment at all .... unless there is some real smoke blowing going on?
Well our GM signed him in Carolina and our OC was his OC his entire career. So I doubt they are worrying about interviewing him. Actually I doubt any team is going to interview him. Just like most high priced free agents. Once free agency starts deals are agreed very quickly and it's been like that for a while now.

the Giants have to say "highest paid guard" instead of "highly paid guard". Why start the bidding at a record breaking pace?
Why say anything at all about Norwell if they truly intend on targeting him??? Makes no sense.

Shurmur was their top choice. It's odd how you don't mind doubling down on how clueless you are.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to connect the dots between the Giants and a big time free agent lineman. It's an obvious team need, Gettleman drafted Norwell years ago, and the head coach and the GM each made offensive line a talking point in their introductory press conference. There are no state secrets to keep quiet about.
No OL is going to have five number one or two picks the CAP prevents this since it’s very difficult to keep players on the same team for more than four to five years. Stop drinking the stupid soup no one player is going to solve all the problems associated with the Giants OL and team problems. For whatever reasons almost every FA they sign becomes one of the walking wounded once he becomes a Giant. The quick easy fix looks great on paper then turns into another FA player not living up to contract dollars being paid it’s not a secret it’s a fact.

I thought norwell was undrafted.

This is one of the dumbest, incoherent posts Ive ever read here...even if you were drunk when you posted it.
I dont even know what youre arguing.
Start "interviewing players?" Teams dont really interview players in free agency unless they have a history of off the field problems.
First, consider the source.
Then, take two seconds to think about how absurd it would be for our GM or anyone in our front office to come out and tell the world that we have every intention of making Norwell the highest paid OG in football.
This is nothing but clickbait from a complete pile of shit source with zero credibility.
I absolutely think NYG are going to have serious interest in this player. So will 5-10 other teams. It would be fucking weird if the Giants weren't interested. They need OL help desperately, Gettleman found this player as a UDFA, and Mike Shula coached him.
We'll make a competitive offer - probably more than any other guard is currently making. Will it be enough? We'll see.
Bottom line - I could have written this fucking article. The Giants aren't out there announcing things like this. If you really believe that, you're just completely off base here.

Gettleman would still have been the GM of the front office responsible for signing him. And he was a Panther for 3 years. The familiarity has to be there.
