I keep reading people saying the Giants won't pay OBJ what he wants. First and foremost I want to see that OBJ's injury hasn't/doesn't impact him long term, ala Nicks. But it got me thinking, who are star players the Giants have had and lost to free agency in their prime?
Going back to the mid 90's I cannot think of any losses.
Strahan
Sehorn
Armstead
Toomer
Barber
Eli
Tuck
Osi
Who have we lost? I am talking star players we wanted to keep.
One thing Reese did well was draft DT’s. He didn’t think it was worth it to pay for that 2nd contract when he could draft a much cheaper, solid replacement.
Keeping some on the other hand has led to a few mistakes. Guess who?

I disagree. Did you figure in that it cost a 2nd round draft choice every few years? Maybe Reese could have resigned one of those DT and used that 2nd round pick to add to the OLine or some other position.
I contend that Reese was TOO good at finding DTs in the early rounds so he didn't value what he had and was all too willing to part with those DT and spend more draft picks to replace them.
If OBJ is generational, what does that make Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Megatron....?

All true, but there were implications. By going Hankins and Tomlinson in Round 2 (as ultimate replacements for Cofield and Joseph respectively), we were unable to select, say, a premium LB or OL in the second round.
Didn't Reeves cut McCaffery?
Nicks, Cruz, Wilson, Boss
I should have just made the comment that not many guys thrive away from the Giants.
and I'm saying that with 20/20 hindsight, he turned into a fantastic, hard hitting safety. Redskins signed him after his Giants contract was up.
I think he had some illness (maybe sickle cell) that ended his career early or I think at least impacted his play, but he was great with Pittsburgh.

OL is a poor example. He DID spend some high picks on OL - Pugh, Richburg, Flowers just to name a few.
Now you can argue (correctly) he didn’t choose well. But using a 2nd every 4 years didn’t inhibit him.

While I agree using a 2nd round pick every few years to fill that position was high, the performance didn’t suffer so there’s a lot of value there. It’s noteworthy to see how well he did at that position via the draft. Only if he could’ve been as successful in drafting Olinemen.

As I just mentioned above, OL is a poor example. And so is LB. Reese - for whatever stupid reason - didn’t highly value LB. Part of his undoing.
He was damaged goods (consussions). Played two more seasons after Giants and then retired.
He was a good player and I think the Giants would like to have kept him at a reasonable price. But that was clearly not going to happen. I believe the Raiders outbid themselves for his services!

Ooops... to correct my mistake, it was Tomlinson to replace Hankins; Hankins to replace Joseph; and, Joseph to replace Cofield. All very fine DTs, but the point remains that Jerry Reese had to keep picking a replacement in Round 2 which may have prevented us from getting a premium LB or O-lineman.

Can't imagine them letting him go.

Beckham's impact on Eli's numbers is nearly 4x what Jones' is on Ryan's. I haven't looked at Brown/Roethlisberger or Johnson/Stafford, but I'd be surprised if either had the impact that Beckham has. Eli's passer rating is 30 points higher throwing to Beckham than it is when he throws to any other player on the team.
