The New York Giants have decisions to make. Only the decision-makers have recently changed and, with them, so have the schemes and direction of the franchise. With Dave Gettleman as general manager and Pat Shurmur as the coach, everything changes. They are going to make the roster assembled by Jerry Reese and, in recent years, Ben McAdoo conform to their liking. Here are some of the decisions they face, with projections on how it works out: - more - |
Who stays: DRC, Jenkins, Jerry, flowers.
Who goes: Apple via trade, Marshall, Harris.
2: they are NOT giving up on Eli Apple now.
3: They are not cutting Flowers.
Thats all he is worth on the open market.
"not" going to pay.
Flowers stays only because he is cheap, and because he and Jerry(should only be a backup) are the only starters left on the team....and he basically is a one year rental, who won't be here the following season....
Harris is gone....
Jenkins did not play as well as the previous season, but he is still our best CB....
Marshall, probably one of the biggest disappointments of last season...there was a reason why he wanted to go to a team where he didn't want to be the #1 receiver, because he isn't one, or even a #2, for that matter......I can't believe how bad he was...
If anyone should go, it's JPP, but his contract prohibits it....
I like Jerry as a backup, not starter....

he'll have to take a pay cut....they're going to pay a slot CB who's 32 years old....6.5 million. He's earned his money...but he'll have to a major cut or be cut.
"not" going to pay.
Regardless of how you see him.. he is not simply a slot corner.. he is a top 20 CB at the very least..Good CBs who hit the market as FA regardless of age make a lot more then 6.5M..
As for the wonderful first round selections of Apple & Flowers, I sure hope they can contribute in 2018, but who knows? Apple is the real wild card here, whereas at least Flowers did not make himself a total outcast in the locker room.
So... can Apple get his head on straight and can Flowers accept a possible move (and thrive) to another part of the LOS?
Who knows?

I suspect someone else at ESPN invented the headline to draw attention. Bc in the article Jordan makes it clear cutting Marshall is about the easiest decision of them all.
Lets say you cut Jenkins. You save 6 million dollars... And you just created a hole in your roster.. Now go find yourself a top notch.. maybe a shade below a shutdown corner... for 6 million.. you wont.. try 15-17 million..
Same situation with Cromartie.. You created a hole in your roster.. he can play both in the slot and on the outside. He also might make a good move to Free Safety because with his speed he still has some range.. And he is only on the roster for one more season anyway.. why cut him and create dead money?
Marshall is a no brainer. While he creates some dead money.. He hasnt been productive since 2015. He is 34 and coming off an injury. Too many drops as a receiver for my taste as well. I can take his money and possibly sign someone like Donte Moncrief or Paul Richardson on the cheap.
I agree Eli Apple could be trade bait. The chaos he created in the locker room combined with his terrible play really was an issue last year. Can he turn it around.. maybe.. do you want it to blow up the locker room while you find out? If you do trade him then you certainly cannot cut Cromartie or Jenkins. In fact you need to try and bring back Cockrell.
Flowers stays.. cutting him doesnt help you. You have to hope he can be a decent RG or RT.
John Jerry will probably stay.. he should go.. cause he is mediocre.. Jerry is a back up. He shouldnt be a starter.. but he did seem to do better moving to left guard..
Unfortunately cutting either of them just creates more of a hole in your biggest hole..
Harris is a no brainer.. often hurt.. not enough production..
One move I HOPE they would try to make and one I would HOPE would happen is Eli giving back SOME money to make improvements on the OL. At this point in his career Eli has to realize that if the OL improves it can only help him.
There won't be too many surprises among the rest. Harris may take a pay cut. DRC is more than a slot CB.
Marshall and Jerry are gone.. maybe the surprise cut will be Wing.
I'm fine with Jerry as a backup.
DRC: Like Raanan says, if DRC wants to keep his current salary, he has to play more, specifically as an outside corner. That's fine if we sign a good slot corner.
I think Marshall is gone because he's just lost too much.
Agree that Flowers needs competition for LT, and he should be tried on the right side.
Give Apple a short leash and see if he responds positively. If not, Giants cut bait and take a 6th or 7th round pick.

The QB is 37 and makes $22 million...
" hey did you see our cat?"
"we didn't see shit"
DRC I like a lot but it is a lot of money for an aging CB who quite frankly doesn't play a lot of snaps.

I'm not sure where this "DRC doesn't play enough snaps" is coming from.
He played 55% of the defensive snaps, in comparison:
Jenkins - 56%
Apple - 59%
Snacks - 58%
DRC also played 34% of the special teams snaps, which was the highest of the defensive starters.
Jenkins missed several games, so not sure why you would compare them. Apple I do not wish back to be honest. Bad attitudes can kick rocks.
Despite the suspension, which we don't really know what went down... he was one of the few who showed a pulse and sense of pride out there.
He can still ball. Keep him.

I included Jenkins and Apple to help put it in perspective..
Snacks was at 58% if that helps.
Our backs aren't up against the wall, we're healthy as far as cap space. Although his best days are behind him, he still plays well, contributed all over the defense, plays on specials, he projects well into Bettchers Defense as he's a bigger CB who excels in press man and the team loves him. I just don't see the reason to cut him. The market for quality CBs isn't cheap. Just a few years ago Tramon Williams at 32 years old signed a contract for 3 years 21 million.
I'd keep DRC, move Apple, and resign Cockrell. I'd also draft a guy, its a good year for CBs in my opinion.
Not even worth viewing the post.
He played with a bad ankle, till it gave out on him.
DRC is an older player, but the fastest man on the field.
No mention of Pugh & Richburg (the two "best" on the O-line) - I'm being very SARCASTIC
I know this won't be popular, but I also wouldn't cut Marshall. He has an up and down history. I actually expect a decent bounce back season in terms of health and production.
They really shouldn't give up on Eli Apple before seeing how he works out under new leadership and a new coaching staff.
Have you seen the Free Agent CBs? No thanks, I'd rather keep our current guys
