The guy is a damn good back when healthy, certainly better than what we have. Maybe we can get him relatively cheap because of the past few years. We have to take some chances somewhere, and this seems as good a place as any.
GIF is definitely mostly sarcastic. The question mark was supposed to be after that, not after the thread title.
I do wonder a little if things would have worked our differently if the Giants had a chance to draft Martin over Wilson.
Back in the 2012 draft, the Giants wanted Wilson over Martin. Eric has stated that a Giants insider emailed him that info once the draft got under way.
I'm more curious of what would Wilson have accomplished had he not had a neck.
He would never have been a full time player. A situational weapon, yes. But he couldn't master the playbook, couldn't block and was too small. And that is not my opinon only but that of his then position coach Jerrold Ingram. Another Reese Gem, with Mitchell Schwartz, Cordy Glenn, Colby Fleener and Janoris Jenkins on the board.

The word was actually out a few days in advance of draft night.
When healthy he still has it. He hasn't had a lot of work in the NFL. This past year he looked super quick and explosive.
I don't care about the YPC this year. They couldn't block in TB and keep guys out of the backfield. He had no shot. When he had a little space the guy looked good.
My prediction is he has a much better career at his next stop and somebody gets a bargain for the next 3 seasons.

Aside from issues with blocking (which I do not think he would have improved much - not like they didn't consider it when they drafted him), everything else you state is either incorrect or speculative. The guy made big plays as a rookie - both in the passing game, and the return game. But go ahead and trash the guy after 1 year, where he was not the featured back.. Guess you and Ingram would have recommended he get cut after his rookie year.
pretty much toast. Goes to show how short a RB career can be. He's also had some injuries, as well, but that's the life of an NFL RB. One of the reasons I wouldn't take Barkley at #2.

Came into the league at 23 (Barkley turned 21 last week), had injury issues. Different style runner as well. Not nearly as talented.

I agree with you. I know what I saw. He would have had outstanding YPC but the line was terrible in 2012, 2013 and he was getting nailed in the backfield. His ability to cut was almost unreal.
Folks who talk about other guys on the board have forgotten that Bradshaw was the only RB on the roster then and he was badly hurting. Wilson was a need pick example. Not sure why the Giants entered the draft that way.

Loved watching some of those plays as a rookie. He was definitely a home run hitter - watch him in that game against the Saints his rookie year. Amazing talent. Almost 2000 yards of all purpose yards in his rookie year as a part-time player. Might have developed into a Brian Westbrook, or a Dave Meggett type - either way - a guy who could score at any time and anywhere on the field. Since then - the Giants have had OBJ, and no one else who can do that.

I agree with this post except for...Fleener? What's so special about him?
His upside would have well outweighed his downside. He lost his career...a shame. He was a Top 10 back or better.
David Wilson never was a Top 10 back (or better) and didn't look headed toward that distinction. He had a great game against the Saints and very little else. He was not a complete back coming out of college and had struggles at the NFL level before suffering his neck injury.

Fleener may not be Bavaro, but he's been a productive and useful player for 6 years. You could do alot worse in that area of the draft, as we have all seen with Reese's drafts.

Bucs have released RB Doug Martin, as @NFLSTROUD said. Give Martin credit for his comeback to stick in Tampa last year. Now looking for a new team.
I do wonder a little if things would have worked our differently if the Giants had a chance to draft Martin over Wilson.
And you have to think with the injury rehab, the suspension, and the benchings he's probably well rested.

He's pretty fresh for a 29 year old veteran RB.
He's eclipsed 300 carries once and 200 carries twice.
between injuries and suspensions he's probably averaged 165 carries the past 5 years.
For reference Martin has 1150 career rushing attempts in 6 seasons, Todd Gurley in three seasons has 786.
Martin may be washed up or just not that good or not worth the risk given other options, but don't repeat a cliche that makes you look foolish.

"David! I just saw dinner running through the field."
"OK Mom, I'll be back in 5."

He's an ok NFL halfback. Not much more.
