Baker Mayfield

chitt17 : 2/20/2018 12:31 pm
I know I am in the minority, but would love the Giants to draft Mayfield. Trade down a few spots if the thought is, he is not worth the number 2 spot.

I think he better than the rest (just not as tall).

Those comparing him to Manziel, should instead compare him to Brees.
the others have better measurables ...
Csonka : 2/20/2018 12:34 pm : link
but I agree Mayfield's been the better quarterback. Going with the others is about projection.
Can't argue that...
NYG07 : 2/20/2018 12:37 pm : link
Darnold and Rosen certainly have the better profile as prototype NFL QBs. I would be very happy with any of those 3 QBs. I disagree about trading down though. If the Giants identify Mayfield as their guy, they should not get cute and just take him at 2.
Well
MotownGIANTS : 2/20/2018 12:37 pm : link
skipping the draft is not going to help him rise that is for sure.
Brees
cokeduplt : 2/20/2018 12:42 pm : link
Has a much stronger arm than mayfield. Mayfield accuracy is due a lot to the players being open because of scheme. He hasn’t shown that he can be the pocket passer Brees is at this point. Comparison is weak

I don't see how that factors in, Winston and Mariota both declined to attend the draft. Joe Thomas skipped the draft to go fishing.

Brees also played at Purdue with a shit line and little talent. His release, accuracy, and decision making were incredible as he was always under pressure. I still remember watching him play and saying this guys gonna be incredible....
skipping draft night

means there's no chance he shows up and makes a fool of himself.

Yup I don’t see the comparison except for size.

Because teams are using his size against him the draft is the exact place to show size does not matter in direct comp with the other top QBs ....

I disagree with the arm strength but agree with the pocket passer comment. What Brees does so well is manipulate passing lanes. That's what makes him so great. Not saying Mayfield can't learn to do that but that's kinda what makes the comparison a stretch for me.

Russell Wilson is the best comparison from my perspective.

Best case: Wilson
Worst case: Manziel

Yea I don't agree. These teams we'll have their conclusion on Mayfield before draft night.
No thank you!
Tom in NY : 2/20/2018 1:06 pm : link
He's been a great college QB, but I think his game is going to be challenged in the NFL.

Darnold, Allen, Rosen before Mayfield.
Mayfield is a player.
LI NHB : 2/20/2018 1:10 pm : link
I'm starting to get the feeling the Giants are in a can't miss situation with any of Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield.

It should have absolutely zero impact on where he is drafted. Lots of players have chosen to spend draft night at home with family and friends at their side. No one has ever been knocked down for doing so. If anything it makes sure he doesn't get embarrassed; like what happened to Geno Smith on draft night.

Well if he is closer to being like Johnny Football, we can look forward to a future Grey Cup match-up of Johnny vs. Baker.
How is Wilson a good comparison
Tuckrule : 2/20/2018 1:29 pm : link
They don’t play at all alike. Only in size are they similar and Wilson is much much thicker. Mayfields frame is smallish although bigger than I thought after he weighed in at the senior bowl.. And Wilson’s arm strength is near the top in the nfl. Mayfields? Bottom 10 if he’s in the league today.
Mayfiedl has a great act.
TC : 2/20/2018 1:48 pm : link
But does he have enough athleticism to do it against NFL defenders? We'll find out next fall.
IMO
mrvax : 2/20/2018 2:10 pm : link
Mayfield has enough going for him that he will succeed in the NFL. Just how good? I have no idea but he'll have a solid NFL career.
The monster in the room for me is Josh Allen
TMS : 2/20/2018 2:12 pm : link
This guy has all the tools to be another Rothlesberger / Elway. Size. toughness, athleticism attitude and tremendous arm strength. Working with Shurmur and ELI he could develop in two years. Now we are talking franchise material here.
Bree’s has a stronger arm than Mayfield?
Giant John : 2/20/2018 2:36 pm : link
What a bag of dog shit that is.Breesmay be more accurate but arm strength is not close.

UGH. If Josh Allen is taken at #2, forget the remote. I'm throwing coffee tables.
Yeah ok

6'0" spread QB in the Big 12?

Gettleman isn't trying to get fired in 2-3 years.

Delete this useless thread.
I'm not a Mayfield hater
Breeze_94 : 2/20/2018 3:27 pm : link
but I just can't see him being the Giants pick, especially at 2nd overall.

Like the poster above mentions, he is only 6'0 tall, and comes from a gimmick spread offense that played against the big 12.

Mayfield IMO will be a solid NFL QB, but for the most part when you pick as high as the Giants do, you have the luxury of looking for a guy who checks ALL of the boxes, and there are a few too many question marks with Mayfield.

He absolutely has a stronger arm than Mayfield. Mayfield can throw the ball far but he doesn’t have the zip on his ball that Brees has.

Wilson is listed 5'11" and 215 lbs. Mayfield at the senior bowl was 6' and 216 lbs. I don't know where you're going with the "similar size but Wilson is thicker" talk. Their body composition appears to be very similar from what I see.

Daniel Jeremiah polled 5 league executives asking for comparisons, 1 of them said Wilson.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000839431/article/ask-5-whats-best-nfl-comp-for-oklahoma-qb-baker-mayfield

Here's a stat comparison of the two from college:
https://cfbcomparisons.com/russell-wilson-vs-baker-mayfield-college-comparison/

I also think you underestimate Baker Mayfields arm strength. He wasn't far behind Josh Allen at the Senior Bowl.

Mayfield isn't quite the athlete Wilson is obviously. I don't expect him to put up Wilson like numbers at the combine but they have a similar playing style (ability to move in the pocket or escape and extend plays) and a lot of the same traits (quick release, throwing accurately on the run, command).
I like him too....
Simms11 : 2/20/2018 5:36 pm : link
and believe Shurmer could put as system together to exploit his skills, however, how will he handle the winds, cold and weather at METLIFE?
If you think he is the next franchise QB

He is more than worth the #2 spot
Mayfield may or may not be the right choice

I’ve watched Mayfield and Brees. I don’t know how much film you watched on either. But I completely disagree with you. LOL!
