I don't understand why people (Jordan Ranaan) want to cut a 22 year old former top 10 pick because of a rough year. He was solid as a rookie, starting 16 games for the NFL's second ranked defense. He had a tough year in 2017, especially off the field, but a lot of that can be attributed to his maturity issues. The thing about maturity issues- they go away as you mature.
I think the new coaching staff/gm is a great thing for Eli Apple. It gives him a change of scenery without him having to leave the scene in the first place. I'm expecting a bounce-back year from him. The talent is there. He was outstanding vs Denver and Seattle this year, blanketing receivers like Doug Baldwin and Emmanuel Sanders.
Here is a nice little breakdown vid of him from this past year. The guy is an athletic specimen who can mirror receivers, and that is something you can't teach/give up on so early.

I think the question isn't whether you'd find a better corner with the 6.5 mill. It's whether you can better use the money whether it's on the O line or elsewhere in addition to adding a cheaper slot option.
I imagine that clean slate comes with a short leash also.
If he's still what he was, only Cincy or NE would want him( can't imagine him and the Patriots way going well).
Hope he grows up here. He could be real good.
We'll find out over the next 6 months.
As a matter of fact, you have to believe everyone is given a 2nd chance, (Flowers included). With a new coach comes a new scheme and with that, every player gets a chance to see how they fit into that scheme. Some good players in the old scheme will not fit and some "not so good players" in the old scheme will find new life. Maybe Apple is one of those. I think he'll be given a chance at least even though it might not work out, the chance will be there for him to take a hold of.

When you are getting thrown out of practice it means
not having you around is a plus.
Also there has been accusations that he 'jaked' it
and didn't even try.
As I suggested in another post, if you are going to
start over, then I believe you must bring his mother
into the discussion. I think she is also a problem.
If the Giants get him turned around then that would be
great, but I don't think you can even talk about cutting
DRC until you are sure Apple wants to play and that
he can be coached.
we hoped he would progress in year 2 but he seamed to regress instead hard to judge when spags defence was a mess and mac lost the locker room either way they need to add another DB doubly so if they cut DRC be that in FA or the draft so with that its too early to cut apple he is on his rookie contract so isnt costing them big money either
Looney. A very talented football player who had the
talent of a Hershel Walker or Bo Jackson. But, he
was nuts.
The Giants cut their loss in pre-season and traded
him to Colts who couldn't straighten him out either.
He was a disruption! They said he got more fines in
pre-season than the whole Giant team in 20 years.

As for DRC, he plays slot, but he can obviously play outside if they need him to. He can also play centerfield (although his tackling would be a concern there). Given the questions surrounding Apple I think it's short sighted to view DRC as an overpriced slot corner. He is veteran insurance that can step in wherever they need him to. I wouldn't be eager to give that up to save a few million. You can find a cheaper option in FA, but it will most likely be a downgrade.
Honestly, most of you are stuck in 2010 when it comes to player salaries anyhow. 6.5 isn't going to break the cap this year, and he will be off the books next year.
His main problem, is still locating the ball....too many times receivers caught passes on him, because he had no clue where it was....
I agree, DRC is a huge question mark....he is another year older....he had missed some time, the last few seasons, due to nicks here and there(the GB game in the playoffs was huge).....but when healthy, he is the second best DB on this club.....
As someone mentioned, cutting him frees up money that can be used elsewhere, but then you create another hole.....
I think what it comes down to for DRC, is the direction that this football club is going.....if they are playing for now, he is back.....if they are playing for the future, good possibility he is cut....
Reading Harrison’s comments this week, one wonders about his mental state . Not for nothing : he sounds deranged . The new staff has its work cut out for them . Eli graded C+ last season when he got on the field . The talent is there . But his antics were inexcusable . However, Collins public dress-downs also were inexcusable . The Giants have more to worry about on their D than just Apple .
I understand he went through some tough times last year but I think it is best for the him and the team to part ways. He's going to have a ton of attention on him from coaches, players, media and fans and I think he's going to struggle handling it maturely. If they can trade him for another player in a need position and / or draft picks, they should do it. I would do this even is we don't resign DRC (which I wouldn't). I would resign Cockrell, sign a veteran with a known good locker room presence and draft a CB. I've seen enough over the past two seasons that I wouldn't want to infect the chemistry of the team going forward.
If he has any smarts , he will adapt to the new rules.
If not ... then do what has to be done.
If not, he absolutely has to be retained, coached up both on and off the field, and see what we've got.
2) He's a locker room cancer (as acknowledged by players)
3) His attitude stinks, he quits on plays
I wouldn't give up on him yet, but the leash is short.
We don't know what Gettleman, Shurmur and Bettcher view the situation, but they have no ties to Apple and will have a plan on how to build the team going forward.
From all reports the team suspension last year has enabled the Giants to negate the guaranteed component of Eli's salary
It doesn't make sense to cut outright at this point unless he proves to be a real problem. However, I can see a case where Gettleman sees an opportunity to improve the roster by either trading for another player or maybe a draft pick and get the kind of guys he wants.
We should consider Eli Apple in all of this as well. It could well be that Apple will be better off with a fresh start elsewhere.
In Bettcher's scheme it addresses one of the biggest weaknesses we have on our current roster being a fast, athletic 'money-maker' ILB.
