The case for Minkah Fitzpatrick

RomanWH : 2/22/2018 4:28 pm
Provided the collective Giants braintrust comes away from their extensive draft preparation not enamored with any of the top QB prospects... I'd like to present a case for a draft prospect that isn't often discussed on BBI. Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

A local kid(from Old Bridge, NJ. Played at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City), Minkah saw a good amount of playing time in his true freshman season for Alabama(45 tackles, 11 passes broken up, a couple of sacks and 2 pick 6's). Over his Alabama career, he added to his impressive stats while playing very, very good centerfield coverage safety and a solid amount of nickel corner as well.

At 6'1", a little over 200 pounds, MF lacks ideal size but makes up for it with outstanding instincts and coverage skills.

Giving a versatile and well-rounded talent from a top college program to our new DC could significantly help return our defense to prominence. It would free up Landon Collins to play closer to the LOS while MF is in single high. Heck, you could move them both around all over the place with different presnap looks and blitz options. Really give opposing OC's fits.

Gone would be the days of our questionable safeties(I'm still trying to erase the Unga days from my memory). Opposing TEs won't have such an easy time being productive off our safeties anymore. Passing plays will be better challenged since we'd be fielding a DB group of MF, Collins, Jenkins, DRC, Cockrell, and if he can get his head on straight, Apple. That's definitely not easy to win matchups against.

Obviously, there's a large contingent who are on Team Saquon if we pass on a QB. And some on the Nelson bandwagon and if we stay a 4-3 front, some want Chubb. Most anyone would say that #2 is way too high for a safety and I fully agree. All I'm saying is if DG gets a good trade down package I wouldn't be upset at all if MF is our pick. Lord knows he could help any of the teams picking in the top 10(including the Browns who would love to pair him and Peppers together in their defensive backfield).

He is not a very good cover and is more of a safety at this point. He would be a reach at 2 and would prefer another position at either quarterback or running back.

not that I disagree with anything you said, but a number of experts have Fitzpatrick going 3-5 in their mocks. If true that he's a top 5 pick, is he a reach at 2.
His agent must be fuming
NikkiMac : 2/22/2018 4:51 pm : link
Because the other day I heard on NFL network that he says his best position is slot corner, admitting that might cost him some money because outside CBs get more money usually.

That report will have zero impact on anything.
I just like his initials

Just a little overrated IMO
est1986 : 2/22/2018 5:00 pm : link
I don’t like how he was used at bama. I actually think he can be good as a pure cornerback but haven’t seen him as that, he’s all over the field but if you want a guy doing that go Derwin James. I don’t think Fitzpatrick goes top 10. That’s what I mean when I say overrated. He seems to be a top 10 guy in nearly every mock draft. I think he can make a good physical corner. Interested to see where he lands and how he is used in the NFL. Id start him at CB instead of S.
If as advertised ...not a crazy idea
idiotsavant : 2/22/2018 5:05 pm : link
Even though I think DT improves by leaps and bounds this season..S is the new LB.. in the cliche sense.

Free up Collins. Enable multiple sets.

It's all on your value. But not crazy to add a safety.
He’s the best football player in the draft in my opinion.

I made the case for Fitzpatrick on here a month ago and was flamed by the BBI experts.

This is not true. In fact many project him to play corner.

What is considered ideal for a free safety?
You mention a giants safety named Unga. . . . . .
Snacks : 2/22/2018 5:59 pm : link
I think you are referring to the former Linebacker.

I don't recall a safety named Unga ever playing for the Giants.

No big deal though.

Fitzpatrick is fantastic. He reminds me a bit of Jalen Ramsey in terms of versatility and ability.

Kid has a great head on his shoulders. He's a natural leader and an outstanding football player. He's going to be awesome.

That said, I just can't see NYG taking him 2nd overall and don't think they should.

You're right... Snacks
RomanWH : 2/22/2018 7:47 pm : link
Was completely wrong about Unga. That's my bad memory still remembering him getting torched in coverage.

Once again, I'm advocating that I'd be fine with DG drafting MF after a trade down. He is regarded as a top 10 talent though.

Not anymore. The nickel position is a highly paid one. Example is our very own DRC

How much has Tyrann Matthieu been worth for the Cardinals on the field?

I would argue that Fitzpatrick is an ideal fit for Bettchers multople schemes considering he could be used in the slot, at corner or free safety.
Maybe with a trade down
rasbutant : 2/22/2018 11:34 pm : link
Broncos again are a great trading spot at 5.

Potential for there to still be a top 3 Qb there, Barkley, Fitz, or Chubb. And you pick up say an extra 2nd rounder and a 1st rounder next year.
He will be a great pro because
Jimmy Googs : 2/22/2018 11:58 pm : link
he is simply a football player. Don’t worry about that he doesn’t fit a true position. He just gets it...

I agree. Maybe top three player IMO but outstanding instincts and plays all over the field. Reminds me a little of E Thomas.
if browns
msh : 2/23/2018 2:38 pm : link
take barkely and we trade back with browns to 4 and they dont want one of the QB's then chubb could go to indy at 3 (thou i think they may look QB with the uncertainty over lucks shoulder still hanging over them) then in that situation fitzpatrick is a viable option escpecially as they would have extra picks for OL and WR in that senario then yes i think he could be the pick but unless they trade back i would prefer either barkley (if available?) or chubb if they stay at 2 not so much at 4 with extra picks he makes sense at 2 with no trade in play its a bit of a luxury pick
Some excellent comparisons
RomanWH : 2/23/2018 3:20 pm : link
If MF comes close to being like an Earl Thomas, then he'd be worth a top 5 pick easily. Also, good point about how creative Bettcher was in Arizona at putting the honey badger in positions to succeed. Could Fitzpatrick be a healthier honey badger? Is there a more complete prospect in the draft?
You need to look at him within the context of the others
JonC : 2/23/2018 3:22 pm : link
#2 is probably going to be too high to pick him.

Agreed. That's why I said in the original post in the last paragraph that I'd be cool with this selection if we trade down.
I'd wager they choose impact on offense

Darnold or Barkley.
