The Giants actually warranted a second compensatory pick and are one of five teams who qualified but will not receive a pick because the final numerical values of the qualifying free agents lost by those clubs ranked No. 33-37.
The Giants lost Hankins, kicker Robbie Gould, offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse and defensive back Cody Sensabaugh last offseason. They added quarterback Geno Smith and tight end Rhett Ellison.
The Bengals, Cowboys, Packers and Raiders each received four compensatory draft picks.

Another reason they didnt need Geno last year. Thanks McAdoo!
Start with the Bengals, Cowboys and Packers, each of which have received four additional draft picks.
Cincinnati has added picks in the third (No. 100 overall), fifth (No. 170) and seventh (Nos. 252, 253) rounds. Dallas' haul consists of selections in the fourth (No. 137), fifth (Nos. 171, 173) and sixth (No. 208) rounds. Green Bay's spoils are nearly identical, with picks in the fourth (No. 133), fifth (No. 172, 174) and sixth (No. 207) rounds.
Gallman last year looks like a decent 4th rounder, long way to go.
Goodson could be a decent one if he can stay healthy but big IF
Then there is almost a decade of busts. I mean the best one in that time was prob Andre Brown...
Zak DeOssie in 2007 was a decent one. Only a ST guy but with the team for 11 seasons and 2 SB's.
2006- Barry Coefield is a very good 4th rounder
2005- Brandon Jacobs is also a good one
2000- Brandon Short
1992- Keith Hamilton
All in all, the Giants have hit on like 5 or 6 of their last 20+ 4th rounders.
Kind of puts it in perspective. Gettleman actually did pretty well in CAR in the 4th round. He hit on 2/3 4th rounders in Carolina. Got an All-Pro RT in Daryl Williams and a starting caliber S in Tre Boston, who is in LA now, but just had a great season and is going to get a nice deal in FA this off-season.
I think getting Cockrell makes up for giving up our 7th for Cockrell, but maybe I'm misunderstanding how trades work.
Another way to look at it is that the Giants gave up a 7th round pick for a one year rental on Cockrell and finished 3-13. So did getting Cockrell really make up for losing this year's 7th round pick? Only if they re-sign him. At least then it could be said that his year with the Giants gave them both inside information and the inside track on landing him as a free agent.
As you say, they have the inside track to resign him if they wish to. If he wants too much money or they don't want him, then a 7th round pick for 1 year rental was still fine.

That's 20/20 hindsight. At the time when the Giants made that trade, they were 0-0. At the time when the Giants made that trade, they were coming off a 11-5 season and a playoff berth. At the time when the Giants made that trade, they had reasonable expectations that they would be in a position to contend for the playoffs yet again in 2017.
And they gave up a 7th round pick for a season of Ross Cockrell. There's no "only if they re-sign him" condition required. One season of Cockrell is fair value for a 7th round pick. JFC, talk about overvaluing draft picks. Just months earlier, the Giants spent a 7th on trading up for Bisnowaty in the 6th. If you want to talk about recovering a wasted 7th round pick, that's the one to mention.
Getting a player that played as well as Cockrell did

Of course it's 20/20 hindsight, but Mr. Nickels was talking in the here and now, so I thought that was the whole point. As for Cockrell in 2017, I think he exceeded expectations.
An extra 4th rounder is good news, but I would rather see the new regime stop developing great defensive tackles just so some other team can reap the benefits, i.e., Hankins, Joseph, Cofield, and Griffin.

What would the point of that be? We spent a 3rd pick last year. The odds of finding a good QB that late in the draft is minimal.
ROD BABERS
As opposed to the current GM using one on Edmund Kugbila. lol
The current GM hasn't made a pick and a long-time assclown is already projecting a miss.
Awesome stuff!

No one is projecting a miss dumbass,
Actually, given the consistently fucked up shit you post, it probably was....
