The Cap

djstat : 2/23/2018 11:54 pm
Lots of people post crazy stuff on here about trades and cuts. With the Cap I will promise you JPP is on the team this year. So will OV. As of today the Giants have $24.5 Million in cap space of an expect d $178 Million cap. More dollars can be had and will be had when players are released.

Brandon Marshal - $5.1 Million
John Jerry - $2.5 Million
Dwayne Harris - $2.4 Million
Brad Wings - $1.025 Million
Ray Ray Armstrong - $1.2 Million

Cut those players and save $12.225 Million for a total available cap of $36.7 Million.

The Giants are not as rich in cap space as Cleveland or San Francisco’s but they have a better roster and more talent.

The Giants are in a good cap place.

They can resign OBJ and probably lower his cap number by $2 Million.

Remember all you neagatove nellies that the cap is not straight dollars and cents. It’s complex.

Good news is we have good cap health and NYG has figured out how to have cap money to spend without restructuring contracts.

The Giants can extend OBJ this year and take his $
Thanks, DJ

Remember our own BBI captologist, Optimus?
Every player cut is replaced in the Top 51...

Just not posting as much. I think you hold up on giving Odell his money until next year. By then, you trade Eli or release him---this is based on the assumption that they draft a QB 2nd overall (probably Rosen). Nice confluence of events.

Hi mrvax. Thanks for asking. I was sick for a bit, but I'm better. I'm overseas now and went through a divorce so things changed for me. I didn't make it a priority to post.

Leave that stuff alone for the life of me the Cowgirls got 4 compensation picks we got one? Why because we signed Smith and Ellison that’s what’s being said great moves.
Who the F*ck is Ray Ray Armstrong?
ZogZerg : 2/24/2018 7:54 am : link
I have never heard of that player.

Good Point Milton. You still need to replace these guys, which will use up cap.
Brad Wing being cut
Jolly Blue Giant : 2/24/2018 8:29 am : link
Won't effect the cap much because he is the only punter on the roster and obviously you need to sign another punter.

technically yes, but via the rule of 51 if you sign. Free agent, one of those minimum salary guys Falls back off the 51 so you can use their number.
John Jerry is one of your starters - by default - but a starter anyway
Ivan15 : 2/24/2018 8:34 am : link
With 3 other linemen as free agents, you don’t cut a cheap starter who would cost more to replace.

Same with Wing. Don’t cut him loose. Bring in competition. He had a bad year. Past performance indicates he can be very good. Just like the “shanks” in my golf game, he can be fixed.
You need to factor in subsequent years as well
Bruner4329 : 2/24/2018 8:37 am : link
Although we probably will have somewhere between 30 to 35 million in 2018 cap space, next year we have almost double that amount before any future changes in 2019. Meaning they can be creative and push some of the impact outside of 2018 for cap purposes. We should be able to do some things this year. We have some flexibility.

I was going to mention this as well. The other thing you have to consider is where the team sits compare to other teams in terms of salary cap as well. Although the Giants appear flush with cash over the next three years, in each of the years there are at least 20 teams with more cap space, which does impact the Giants ability to compete for the premium FAs. One nice factor is that the Eagles are dead last in cap space over the next three years. The Redskins and Cowboys are in the same neighborhood as the Giants over the next three years.
Marshall and Duane Harris
GeoMan999 : 2/24/2018 10:15 am : link
Are the ones to be cut still leaving a healthy cap number ($31 million or so).
Whatever
djstat : 2/24/2018 11:07 am : link
The point is, the team is in a good position cap wise.
don't cut Harris
Chip : 2/24/2018 11:59 am : link
When you can restructure any number on contracts and create more room. A top gunner who can also play some WR for a 1.9 saving after cap displacement isn't worth. Restructure is the Cowboy way.

Did you know that 14 teams have over 31+ mil CAP space before even doing any trash dumps but the Giants are in a good CAP situation if they can get to 35+ mil. Now does that really make sense when your team needs 30+ new players being kind to some others?
Chip
Dragon : 2/24/2018 12:02 pm : link
What has Harris done to even come close to his contract numbers?
Not many teams..
FatMan in Charlotte : 2/24/2018 12:02 pm : link
do "trash dumps" and really haven't for many years.

Teams structure contracts such that they have the ability to release players without terrible cap ramifications. Plus, each year the cap rises, making it even easier to plan for.

You really seem to not understand the cap. It isn't a race to have money left over - the optimum spot would be to be right up against the cap every year without stifling the ability to make moves.
The Giants can do more than that
rich in DC : 2/24/2018 12:17 pm : link
Marshall and Armstrong are almost certain cuts. DRC might be, depending on whether the defensive coaches feel he fits their scheme.

Jerry and Harris will be likely cuts. Harris offers nothing in the return game anymore and is not a legit WR. Jerry is just a guy. The Giants brought back their depth signing in Greco. Jerry won't be starting in 2018.

Taking all that together, he's what the Giants COULD have.

DRC- Dead money on cap: $2.0M Cap savings: $6.5M

Marshall- Dead money on cap: $1.0M Cap savings: $5.156M

Jerry- Dead money on cap: $800,000 Cap savings: $3.325M

Harris- Dead money on cap: $800,000 Cap savings: $3.25M

Armstrong- Dead money on cap: $0 Cap Savings: $1,237,500M

One of the BIG misconceptions that MANY fans have about the cap is what dead money actually is. The first thing to remember is that each player has a "cap number" which is a combination of salary, bonuses, prorated signing bonus and other like factors. That number is ALREADY INCLUDED in the team's cap.

Therefore, "dead money" is NOT a new addition to the cap- it is simply the REMAINDER of the player's cap number that cannot be eliminated by cutting or trading the player.

For example, using the numbers above, Marshall has a "cap number of $6,156,250. That is made up of his $5M salary, the $1M prorated signing bonus and $156,250 in other adjustments. When Marshall gets cut, his salary cannot be paid, so it is eliminated from the cap. However, the pro-rated signing bonus cannot be eliminated from the cap as it has already been paid. The $156,250 in adjustments come off.

Thus, the Giants incur a $1M "dead money" hit- but save $5,156,250 by releasing him. None of this is "new" hits to the cap- it is the remainder of the original cap number that cannot be eliminated under the CBA rules.

Thus, under the cuts above, the Giants would incur $4.6M in dead money (out of the original cap numbers totaling over $24M that was already counting against the cap, saving about $19.5M against the cap, putting the Giants roughly $44M under the cap.

Sure, that means that the Giants will have to spend $$ on a CB in FA- but we have to be honest that DRC isn't a long term solution- and it is time to replace him and get a solution that the Giants can count on for at least 3-4 years.

I also think that fans need to have perspective. The Giants might get one big name FA, but will likely be shopping in the mid to low range group of FA with a max of around $40M to spend in FA- with so many teams having well in excess of $50M in space.
For DRC
DavidinBMNY : 2/24/2018 12:38 pm : link
A restructure/reduction might make more sense.

I'd rather pay him say a total of 5 million with 1.5 rollover into next year of Bonus (so basically he takes a payout he can make up in incentives) and with an option to keep him another year at say 6mm all in.

He's still a good player.

Again, missing the point.

DRC HAS BEEN a good player, but IS showing decline. There is a serious question whether he is even worth keeping this season. He is no longer an every down player. However, extensions/restructures are how you end up with a cap disaster. When a player is in decline, you do NOT want to extend the cap hit.

Instead, you cut the player, take whatever hit there is (VERY minimal with DRC) and move on to the next player that will get you through the next 3-4 years.

Jolly Blue, the GIANTS have already signed another punter.
Red Dog : 2/24/2018 2:36 pm : link
Austin Rehkow, who was in camp with Buffalo last summer, has been signed to a futures deal.

Rehkow may not be the NYG punter of the future, but it clearly shows that Wing will have competition for his job in summer camp.

I like DRC and know he only played 58% of the defensive snaps last year. I think he's very useful and we should keep him for the 2018 season. We have no idea what will happen with Apple. If Apple screws up he's gone and DRC heads back outside.
Cap question:
mrvax : 2/24/2018 3:08 pm : link
With the current CBA, there is a floor on player's salaries. I know you can carry it over for 1 or 2 years then after that the cheap team must split $ to all that team's players for those years.

Has any team ever done this? I've never heard.

It is but it isn't mrv. In the UAE you can get it pretty easily in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
