Just saw that

Its only 50% of Beleskey. Even better. Thats a very, very nice deal by Gorts.

He's signed for another year unlike Nash at a very reasonable 4.7M.

It would be a mistake to wait until the Draft to move him if that's what we're going to do. The market could see a glut of D-men with the likes of Carlson among otherspotentially becoming available.

Of course they'll get more for McDonagh. Not sure what you expected here. They added three solid assets for a rental. And as much as we like his game and recognize he has been unlucky, it's a rental on pace for about 40 points
Will miss big # 61 ...
Stufftherun : 2/25/2018 10:16 am : link
despite the criticism he recd from fans who expected 40 goals a season at a contract drawn up by another organization. He was a true professional in every sense of the word and was likely hurt by the system he played in and his responsible 2 way game.

As far as what came back this way from a personnel standpoint, not much to get overly excited about, and we can only hope that loading up on draft day will pay off.

...for a rental'.

Actually they added one solid asset. Possibly two if Lindgren is, maybe...maybe not. Spooner and Beleskey? meh.

But I think we did OK and noted the 1st rounder is the real asset and centerpiece of the deal.
Spooner
Kyle in NY : 2/25/2018 10:31 am : link
25 points in 39 games this season, had a 49 point season two years ago. As the third piece in the deal, I think that qualifies as solid. And they can always unload him for more assets as well

According to Boston fans the next time Spooner doesnt avoid contact or give any effort defensively will be his first time. He can put up points on PP and that is about it
Spooners's size and effort to date as a two way player...
Torrag : 2/25/2018 10:39 am : link
...is the issue and why I don't regard him as much of an 'asset'. He lacks that special something smaller guys must have to really help your club ala Zuccarello.
Fair enough
Kyle in NY : 2/25/2018 10:41 am : link
but as the third piece in a rental deal, I'm good with it. Boston could very easily go out in round 1 against Toronto and this becomes an early 20s first rounder
1st plus Lindgren
bigbluehoya : 2/25/2018 10:51 am : link
Is a good haul. Dont like spooner? Dont tender him. Hes a RFA.

I didnt say I expected anything rather I simply pointed out that aside from the # 1pick, there wasnt much to get overly excited about. Belesky is a dump, Spooner is undersized, and as Mike pointed out below, is lacking in size and is hardly physical, which is something youd like to see up the middle especially in what is fast becoming a smaller roster. Sure, the game has changed quite a bit but bigger bodies are always ideal for the long grind of an NHL season. Lindgren is a wait and see player with some grit to his game by all accounts but again, its a wait and see.
'Spooner...is lacking in size and is hardly physical'...
Torrag : 2/25/2018 10:57 am : link

Nash had the highest 5v5 G/60 of any player while he was a Ranger.
BrettNYG10 : 2/25/2018 11:00 am : link
Disappointing playoff performer, although I don't think he gets enough credit for his excellent play in 2015 (2014 is fair game, IMO).

Great Ranger, I'll miss him.

Return looks good. Don't know anything about Lindgren. But Spooner is a really nice piece that I hope they can flip.

I wish him luck. One of the more dominant on the puck guys I've seen, especially in person, but finishing hung him up while in NY.

Yup. Nash was a very good player. It's a shame his run here will be defined by a lack of historically great clutch moments but this is how it works in sports. You're defined by those specific, clutch moments in time.
If Nash had scored 2-3 More postseason big goals

The number one pick is something.

Retaining 50% of Nash salary is huge too.

All in all, okay trade, but not better than okay.
I don't think retaining Nash'ss salary is any issue.
yatqb : 2/25/2018 11:59 am : link
He comes off the books after the season, and we're not gonna need that cap space for any of our trades at the deadline. Indeed, if anything we'll be trading high salary guys in the next two days.

Beleskey's salary is an issue, though.

Me? LOL? Just getting caught up, my youngest had two games this morning already.

I would be a little disappointed in the Nash trade if I was a Rangers fan, but they got what they wanted, a 1st round pick, a young prospect (lindgren) and a young NHL ready player (spooner).

I'm just not a fan of Spooner (for the Rangers) and the 1st will be a late first.

I like Lindgren a lot though.

Sort of surprised MTL and TOR got together for a trade, but I like the return for Plekanec. He's a legit NHL C and can play PK and win on the dots, but he's not a top 6 player and he's a 35 year old rental.

What I don't like is I read that WPG had a slightly better offer on the table, but Bergevin opted to take into account Plekanec's wishes (he is a 13-year Habs veteran), and keep him in the East.
Hope
Giantfootball025 : 2/25/2018 1:15 pm : link
they flip Spooner for a 2nd or 3rd. I don't see him as a fit here, unless the Rangers see something I don't.

Retaining 50% of Nashs salary is pretty much the antithesis of huge. It has literally no implications for NYR moving forward.

is challenging Dumbrowski for WORST GM IN THE BOSTON SPORTS MARKET.
Nash for Spooner,Beleskey, Lindgren, '18 1st, '19 7th( its a body, right?)
Then signs Brian Gionta, fresh off the Olympic team.
Next will be Ignila for a 2nd go around.
I think its the Dirty Water. When they really need the Fountain of (talented)Youth.
At least they'll have 2 guys that can actually pass cleanly AND, lift the puck when the goalie is lying on the ice.
You guys are ridiculous
BestFeature : 2/25/2018 2:17 pm : link
Some people think that Spooner as is is as good if not better than Nash now, and he's younger. We also got a 1st round pick. We also got a solid defensive defenseman prospect. Outside of this board people pretty universally think that the Rangers got a great deal. When I read the Rangers page on Facebook I lose all respect for Rangers fans because 90% of them don't realize that it's not 1995 anymore and all they want is #Toffness. Yet here we are at BBI and I'm getting the same vibe. Don't make me lose respect for BBI too. This is a great haul for Nash. He wasn't in our plans anyway. He's a pending FA that's on pace for less than 50 points, and is 33. What did you expect?
I like Spooner.
BrettNYG10 : 2/25/2018 2:18 pm : link
But he's not an asset the Rangers need right now. Can they flip him for a 2nd or 3rd? Don't know anything about the prospect.

I think it's a good deal. I was hoping for one of the Nashville good prospects and a first, but this is a solid deal.
Dont understand why Spooner is being dismissed as
redbeard : 2/25/2018 2:19 pm : link
A throw in. Hes on pace for a 50 point year at 26. Hes not gonna be a sure fire top 6 winger but a third liner with offensive upside isnt just some schlub

He's a 4th line player on the Rangers. IMO. It's not that he's a bad player, but he's redundant with their roster.

He's not displacing Z, Hayes, or even Desharnais, IMO, probably sends Lettieri back to Hartford though if they make no other moves.

And then next year with Lias Andersson and Chytil both being centers, he's just not a good fit in NY.

He's in Hartford, again my opinion.
Spooner is a very talented player who has failed to take the next step
Vanzetti : 2/25/2018 3:13 pm : link
Sometimes guys like that put it all together when they go to a different organization. Often, they don't. We will see.

But he is exactly the type of player you look for in a trade like this. Excellent passer, can carry the puck on his stick, has the body control to skate with the puck up center ice.

Agree this as well as similar from bigbluehoya:
Quote:
Stings a little to see Nash go. Never quite produced at the peak level they expected, but a true pro and a hardworking player. Probably unlikely, but Id gladly sign him again in the offseason.

And it does sting: for all his lack of big numbers, Nash had the ability to turn a game around, spark the Rangers out of a funk, by his tenacious checking, sneaky steals and then creating in the attacking end with his possession...he was hard to move off the puck when he had it. Often on special teams. As said, a true professional, team guy. Will be interesting to see where Gorts goes with all this.
Agree that we are gonna miss Big Rick
redbeard : 2/25/2018 5:17 pm : link
The sentimental part of me hopes that he finds a way back to broadway in the off-season but realistically know thats probably not gonna happen

Didn't deliver, that is his legend.
The haul for Nash
PaulN : 2/25/2018 6:05 pm : link
Is fair, but it's not a great haul. But it is fair. Now they need to develop players, they must fire AV, who is not the right coach for player development. Jon Cooper, the coach for Tampa Bay Lightning's minor league team is supposed to be the next great coach. Rangers should move on him right away. The Lightning have a best system in the NHL, they have more great prospects then any franchise, this guy is developing =all these players coming into the league for the Lightning.
Benoit Groulx
PaulN : 2/25/2018 6:08 pm : link
Sorry, I named Tampa Bay's coach, Benoit Groulx is the coach for Syracuse, he is the guy I meant to say.
Saw a stat
pjcas18 : 2/25/2018 6:13 pm : link
while Nash was a NYR he lead the team in goals, third in assists and 1st in points.

hockey is such a team game, I hesitate to blame a player for team failures, so you guys know if he let the team down in the playoffs (on the scoresheet) more than me, but from the games I saw (all the Canadiens series and some more - since I watch as much playoff hockey as possible) he was usually the Rangers best player in all those series after Hank.

His loss will be felt if they don't re-sign him IMO, though tempered by the youth infusion with players like Andersson and Chytil probably, but nonetheless it will be felt IMO. Until he's replaced. A big body like him who plays a legit 200 foot game, can fit on all specials, and can be gritty (even if it's not his game) is hard to find.
I hope they bring him back
Kyle in NY : 2/25/2018 6:16 pm : link
In the end, he became one of my favorite players on the team. Really enjoyed watching him and he was absolutely dominant in his first three seasons here. The 2014 postseason will unfortunately always cloud his legacy but his playoff choker reputation is overblown IMO. I bet he does really well for Boston
