Whitworth vs Solder this year

BigBlueDownTheShore : 2/25/2018 5:03 pm
I cannot wrap my head around the BBI thought process this year. Most on the board last year were all in on Whitworth who signed a monster contract at 35 years old.

Nate Solder is 30 years old and I have seen over and over again that we shouldn’t sign him since he would be on the decline and back end of his career.

Most point to Solder’s back injury, but if you look back on injury histories Whitworth was held out of games due to back injuries and knee issues as late as 2015.
Good point

We should try our best to sign him and Norwell not sure if it's possible to get both. I would prioritize Norwell though.
Solder is a good player....but

I watch every Pats game, he is not in Whitworth's league. I think a lot of us would love to sign a stud LT but there has not been much available. Most are broken down! I think we use Flowers another year and draft a developmental prospect to give Flowers and Wheeler competition. if Wheeler gets stronger he could surprise.
A week ago I suggested

Cameron Fleming. The Pats had 3 Right Tackles. Sy liked the idea but said he too could be expensive because the level of OL play in the league is bad. Anybody with potential might get overpaid. But that could settle one position, Right Tackle, which has been horrible the last few years.
While you were looking at their history,

I'm sure you realized that Whitworth was named to the pro-bowl multiple times over his career. He is the prototypical LT. While Solder is younger, he was only named as an alternate to the pro-bowl this year.

Solder's son has cancer. I would be surprised if he uprooted his

family. He'll be a Patriot next year. Wasn't there also speculation he may retire?
Is Solder a product of the scheme the Pats play? How well would

he do changing to a system at his age?
Whitworth is a MUCH better player than Solder

ever was or has been. Solder almost retired due to his family issues. Whitworth did not sign a huge contract. He signed a 3 year deal and would have been a great signing. He has been worth every penny and more to the Rams.
I only way

I can see the Giants getting Solder is if Belichick tries to go cheap on him.
If the NYG were a one year fix

I’d go all in on Solder. But I think they’re 2 years away. Getting younger and better should be the strategy here.
Give me 4 mercenaries on 2-year contracts to fill out the o-line

With Flowers somewhere other than LT. Pay them about $20-22 million.

Then, take 2 solid drafts to find their replacements.
Solder will not sign here and there is a 1 in 3 chance of getting

Norwell.

Move on down the road.
It's very simple really...

They're not the same player.

Whitworth is a better player, and he's doing things guys who are 36 shouldn't be doing. You never bank on a lineman playing at that level at that age.

Last I checked we won 2 Super Bowls with David Dheil at LT, not a perennial pro-bowler.

We need a serviceable LT. Flowers can contribute somewhere, but thinking Wheeler is going to be the answer isn't the real answer. He could be, but we can definitely do better.
Servicable is great if you get him at that price
JonC : 2/26/2018 11:27 am : link
which figures to preclude Solder, perhaps the best LT about to hit the open market.
We should aim higher than serviceable
JonC : 2/26/2018 11:28 am : link
and it's not looking like a good year to do it, which helps Flowers' case.
