Different coaches and medical yet same injury issues so far. Swarzak, Cespedes join the other 10 guys w injuries.

And pitching looks like it has A LOT of work to do already. This zen master Callaway is either going to back his talk w an epic career or become a complete joke in 2 years.

Or do we have to wait for DeGrom news before breathing?

And Swarzak has no timetable for his return.

We deal with this every year. Can you really blame people for being this way? Mets fans are battered children. We've been watching our best players get hurt every single year like we're Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
Vargas

Man. What a change of pace he is from the rest of the staff. Pure junk baller. Offspeed low and away he’s got the Marlins flailing at.
Gave up a blast to cF
Again and Bruce chasing a bloop to rF line is like watching two lovers jogging in slow motion with some romance music in the background. Sooooo sloooowwwwwww lol
Good throw to 2b by Bruce to get him.
1B cameraman - terrible hands!

31p, 2IP, 3H, 1ER (on a HRA), and 1K. Topped out at 87-88mph. Beat writers said that his breaking stuff moved well.
Reyes
Shecky : 3/1/2018 2:18 pm : link
Surprisingly looking good at SS.
Jax sloppy in cF. Lazy play.

6 up 6 down for Lugo
Metnut : 3/1/2018 3:07 pm : link
FB topped out at 94mph, slider 87, curve at 75. Beat writers said he looked really good.
Lugo
Shecky : 3/1/2018 3:10 pm : link
Was sitting 91/92. Night have hit 94, but no on would say he was throwing 94. If that makes Sense. Looked fine though.
Nice curves this inning
Shecky : 3/1/2018 3:12 pm : link
Those have looked excellent. Lots of grounders.
Keep in mind this is the minor league lineup of a minor league team...
Now a K... 8 up 8 down.

I like Lugo a lot as a back-end starter.

He's just a pitcher. He isn't a flamethrower and he doesn't have overpowering stuff, but you always feel like you can get a quality outing and that he'll keep you in the game when he's on the bump.

Hope he can stay healthy.

Same. Any thoughts on David Thompson? I read last year that his defense was becoming a positive and he's had a few hits this week.
For back of the rotation pitchers, Lugo and Gsellman are so
PhiPsi125 : 3/1/2018 6:32 pm : link
huge for this club. With this starting 5, there’s definitely going to be opportunities for them to pitch. And if the pitch like we know they are capable of, they are amazing depth for our rotation.

Not sure why, but I think Wheeler puts it together this year. The potential for this rotation is off the charts but I feel like we’ve been talking about potential for years. Just once, let’s put it together. FTW!
Wow... you don’t hear this every day
ZGiants98 : 3/1/2018 7:08 pm : link
Bobby Cox gushed over Harvey the other day and says the scoreboard velocity readings were “low” and not “high”. According to him, Harvey was throwing harder than the 95/96 on the board.... 🤔
Link - ( New Window )
I don’t think people understand
ZGiants98 : 3/1/2018 7:16 pm : link
How huge just having Syndergaard and DeGrom together and healthy is. We had the best pitching staff overall in baseball in 2016 and number one overall if you just count rotations. That’s without Wheeler for the year, Harvey looking like dogshit and then out for the year, and Matz missing months to injury. Still number one in fWAR and FIP.

If everyone was actually healthy and pitching up to their potential we would probably challenge for best staff of all time. That’s wishful thinking though. In the very least Vargas blocks a guy now. We don’t need that though. The 5 aces dream needs to die. It was never realistic. No team has ever had 5 aces. Just give me Thor and DeGrom and Vargas types and we are already practically there to 2016 levels again. The trickle down effect is massive.
Yes, having 5 Aces is a dream. Even having 3 Aces is
PhiPsi125 : 3/1/2018 7:25 pm : link
a dream but that would have been a reality if Harvey didn’t have his health issues. Crazy to think about but just not in the cards.

Having Thor and DeGrom plus three #3 type pitchers isn’t unrealistic if we ever get health. Big IF.

History tells us that probably won’t happen but, damn if it does.

Yup. We still have a chance to have a generational type rotation if all the pieces came together but for the purposes of us getting to the playoffs just give me our two horses (Thor/deGrom) for now. If one of those go down the doors could blow off in a heartbeat again.

Likewise the bullpen has a similar effect. If you have a top 5 closer coupled with just one really good setup guy, you are going to have a top bullpen (cough cough 2016). I think people think all the pitchers are created equal and everyone needs to be amazing.... You have anchors that carry the load and take pressure off everybody else. The closer and setup guy are in during the toughest of situations almost every time. A healthy Familia is worth 4 "decent" relievers. Thor is worth 4 decent starters.

As I keep saying though, you gotta keep your stars healthy. We have the talent. We have the key anchor pieces. A lof of if we get to the finish line is going to be sheer luck now.

Zack Wheeler hit 96 mph during the fourth. His ball was moving, for better and for worse. Wheeler made Freddie Freeman look silly on an 88-mph slider, striking out two. But he also allowed a run to score on consecutive wild pitches, and needed 26 pitches to record three outs.

So true

are you trying to curse this season on March 2?

Knock it off with this positive optimistic bullshit.

the season is over and the injuries are piling up. Let's stick with that and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out any other way.

Some of us have scars.

Zs been too busy, so someone needs to feel good around here

Didn’t know how to word it, so I haven’t till now. Couldn’t describe it. But the blahness early in camp. The lack of WOW when looking around. But instead the simplicity of ball players just playing baseball. The little things.

Feels almost like a Cardinals camp.

Montero is Montero
Shecky : 3/2/2018 2:01 pm : link
Looks great one AB and teases you, then nibbles, then gets hard. He’s a puzzle I’ll never quite figure out. My assumption is if you told him “look, here’s your role. Go out and figure it out” he’d be fine. But he pitches like every pitch he’s scared will get him sent down.

Split squad day, so tonight’s game probably gets a bit more coverage. Gives everyone an excuse to head down to West Palm for the night, and get the hell out of PSL

.611 career OPS vs. the Mets which is actually slightly below his career mark (.618)

I don't know why I thought that - I thought he was one of those guys we couldn't get out.

He hit like .310 against us in 2014 - maybe that's what I'm remembering since he's a career .218 hitter.

Hows that glove though ;)

Good for him. He came in feeling REAL good about himself. So getting off to a nice start should really do wonders for him and his confidence. I still say it's the pre at bat ritual...
I hope Cecchini works his way into the conversarion at 2B this year
Eric on Li : 3/2/2018 5:27 pm : link
obviously would have preferred to see him have a good year last year vs. a bad year, but he doesn't K, he walks at a decent clip, and he has the tools defensively if he can figure out the throwing issues.
I’m rooting for Chech too.
ZGiants98 : 3/2/2018 5:30 pm : link
There’s just such a log jam at 2B right now. Cabrera, Reyes, Flores, TJ Rivera, Guillorme, Cheech... He’s going to have to be incredible to leapfrog all those guys on the depth chart.

Reyes was worth 2fWAR last year and is signed to a major league contract. Zero chance Cecchini is taking his spot in 2018 unless Reyes is injured. As for TJ, he hasnt played much in the majors yet but he’s already got over a league average line hitting wise and did things in the minors Cheech could only dream of. I’m not saying it’s impossible but I would definitely have TJ ahead of Cheech when he’s healthy.
A log jam
