NFT: Yankee fans: Domingo German Question...

M.S. : 3/8/2018 9:11 am
...how does the organization view this prospect... starter, reliever?

What is his upside... potential?

If he's major league material, when would he make the 25-man roster... 2019? 2020?

Thanks in advance.
I believe a starter,
section125 : 3/8/2018 9:14 am : link
but there are better observers than me. (Where is Dunedin81?)

No idea when he makes it. I liked his stuff when I saw him up last year. I suppose he is close, maybe 2019.
He turns 26 in August

From MLB.com...
Quote:
German averaged 94 mph as a Minor League starter and 96 mph as a Yankees reliever, featuring sink and run on his fastball and showing the ability to maintain his velocity into the late innings. His low-80s curveball improved in 2017, showing more consistent depth and neutralizing right-handers. He also can get swings and misses with his changeup.

While German throws strikes, his command isn't as sharp as his control. He sometimes falls off in his delivery, elevating his pitches and making them more hittable, and his long arm action gives batters a good look at his pitches. He has had success as a starter in the Minors but may wind up as a reliever in the Majors because of his inconsistent command and lack of a track record of durability.
My best guess is that he is more likely to be included in a mid-season trade than included in the Yankees future plans.
Starter mid rotation
arniefez : 3/8/2018 9:24 am : link
with upside, still raw but making big progress. Probably AAA to start the season but is also probably the 6th starter. He keeps pitching like he did yesterday he's going to force them to find a spot for him.
a few things

Domingo German is CURRENTLY on the 40 man roster. He was a starter before his TJ surgery, and has done thing since coming back to indicate that he can't continue to be a starter. If that doesn't work out then you consider him as a reliever.

He's going to start the year a AAA in the rotation and it wouldn't surprise me if makes at least several spot starts of the course of the season and should someone get hurt I'd imagine he's closer to first in line to get called up than say - Sheffield or Adams - because he's already on the 40 man.
I watched him yesterday ...

Its hard to say. I'd like to see him face a team late into the game and see how they hit against him after facing him over a few at bats.
Got him
Phil in LA : 3/8/2018 11:01 am : link
in the Eovaldi trade and he immediately started overthrowing and got TJS. He's healthy now and has really been coming on strong since last year.
From the little I’ve seen of him
mfsd : 3/8/2018 11:27 am : link
Which is really just seeing some highlights of him in the past plus a couple innings yesterday, he’s got the talent and potential to be a higher end starter, but could struggle to keep his mechanics consistent. We could see him falling off the mound a bit at times yesterday throwing his fastball, and Boone made a cryptic comment about how he needs to find a consistent arm slot.

I’d agree with those saying he starts in AAA, and is potentially either a call up due to injury or part of a future trade
he has three solid pitches
RasputinPrime : 3/8/2018 11:31 am : link
and starter before reliever still in play. I think he and Cessa will be the first to get spot starts or step in if someone goes down.

I was at the game yesterday as well and his stuff looked legit. Mets put out their A lineup and German handled it well. Would've gotten out of the 3rd if Florial didn't drop a flyball.
Aaron Judge 'one and done' with Home Run Derby

Any chance the shoulder was injured or aggravated during the derby last year?

Glad to see Didi plant one.
i'd like to know what our catchers

are hitting this Spring. It seems like all of them are beating the crap out of the baseball.

I think some have brought that up (Judges shoulder/Derby) - he’s consistently denied it, as we’d expect

While German is on the 40 man roster, it would really be a close call between him and Adams to be the "next man up" if a Yankee SP went down. Adams is NOT on the 40 man roster, but is probably more "ready" to go.

Remember that due to injuries, German's career high in IP in a season is about 123 (last year). Even assuming a standard 35 inning bump, he would max out around 155-160 IP.

Adams hit 150 IP last year, and should be good for 185-190 in 2018.

If the injury to a SP was early in the season, it would probably come down to who was on enough rest to make the next start. If around mid-season, the Yanks would have to strongly consider whether German would have enough IP left to be able to step up for a long period.

There is also the added possibility that by mid-season, Justus Sheffield and Domingo Acevedo could be pushing to be called to NY.

These 4 are likely the reason that Yanks didn't fall all over themselves for the mid-rotation FA types that are still out there.
Judge is such a high character guy

love how much it’s clear that he did hurt his shoulder but he refuses to make excuses. That’s what winners do.

close to being a Rule 5 guy - say next fall? Wondering when they need to do something with him.
Sheffield looking good

another solid game all around so far.
Wade

continues to impress. Great D today and another solid day with the bat. He has to be the in the lead for the starter at 2B.

I believe German is already on the 40 man roster so he’s not Rule 5 eligible

Doh, you are right. Sorry about that.
German
Bavaro84 : 3/8/2018 6:30 pm : link
is one of the more underrated Yanks pitching prospects. His fastball is in the 95-98 MPH range and he has 2 above average secondary pitches, one being his curve. He also have very good command. Some prospect publications have him in the Yanks top 10 and as we all know the system is stacked.
