NFT: Sopranos prequel movie in the works

DanMetroMan : 3/8/2018 1:00 pm
Chase finally returning to expand The Sopranos lore will be welcome news to the legions who still feel that his HBO series is the greatest of all time. The groundbreaking show ran for six seasons from 1999 – 2007. It put HBO on the map, established the market for DVD sales of popular series, and won 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and Peabody Awards for its first two seasons. It launched the stars of a slew of actors and revived others, most notably the late James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, Lorraine Bracco, Michael Imperioli, Dominic Chianese, Steve Schirripa and on and on.

Some of the beloved characters from the series will appear in the film. I couldn’t get any more information about the plot, but the time period indicates there will be room for Tony Soprano’s father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy,” the former captain of the Soprano crew (played in flashbacks by Joseph Siravo), and a younger version of his wife Livia (played indelibly in the show’s first season by Nancy Marchand), and Tony’s uncle Junior, played by Chianese.

Expectations will be through the roof

but it sounds promising. Johnny Boy, Livia, Junior, Dickie Moltisanti all in their primes in 1960s Newark - should be interesting.
I miss Mario Puzo

The magic he could've spun writing for this.
Was hoping it would be a series,
barens : 3/8/2018 1:12 pm : link
but I'll settle for a film.
It would be cool if they could bring you chronologically
Chris684 : 3/8/2018 1:14 pm : link
through the time when Tony, Tony B., Ralphie and Jackie Aprile were all young and making their bones but not sure they're gonna go there.

They can probably cast all of those guys as youngsters. Sirico is probably too old looking at this point to ever play a younger version of himself as well so interested to see what they do with Paulie's character.

Yeah a nice eight episode season would've been great, similar to True Detective, but this is better than nothing.
If

anything it gives you some hope there could be other related projects.
Tough to improve on perfection.

While I would obviously watch, my expectations would need to be managed. Very rare for a sequel- or prequel- to maintain the quality of the original. The bar is set very high.
Not that it guarantees anything but

"The Many Saints of Newark" is a great title.
Can't wait to see a young Richie Aprile as well lol..

Maybe we'll see him take down Rocco DiMeo and get "the jackeeettttt!"
Haha yes..
Chris684 : 3/8/2018 1:25 pm : link
I guess we would expect to see Junior, Johnny Boy (obviously), and hopefully Carmine Lupertazzi.

Probably Richie Aprile, Paulie and Feech LaManna. Maybe Johnny Sack?

And then if we're lucky Tony's generation cast as teens Tony, Tony B, Ralphie and Jackie.

Or maybe I'm getting my hopes up.
Maybe we'll see when Tony, Sil, and Jackie Sr

knocked over that card game
Not many plot details yet
bceagle05 : 3/8/2018 1:32 pm : link
but it seems to focus on the 1960s Newark riots, and the tension between the neighborhood Italian and African-American gangsters during that time. Probably leaves out the New York guys, but who knows?

Also, I recall Tony being in his mid 40s when the show ended - during his coma "dream" sequence, "Kevin Finnerty" tells a doctor he's 46 years old - which puts his birth date around 1960. Not sure how faithful they'll be to that, but if so, Tony and his pals would still be young children, as they were in the flashback sequences.

ALT_Giants, I think outside of the Godfather and Godfather
sequels, his writing is nothing special.

I completed the "Sicilian" for me just OK

I tried to complete "Fools Die". Started 3 times but
never got into it.

Good News about the Soprano's. Can't Wait.
Not a fan of the last few HBO series

I like Ballers
I liked music in Vinyl, just hated the series
the Deuce was a creative travesty
the Night of ....thought,too long politically correct

The Fortunate Pilgram was my favorite of his.
from Wikipedia:
Quote:
The Fortunate Pilgrim is the real birthplace of The Godfather. As Puzo says, the book's hero, Lucia Santa, is based on his own mother:
I really like Puzo

"Fools Die" is my favorite book of his, and as mentioned The Fortunate Pilgrim was terrific as well.

Agree! I wish for a series and I think it would be great, but like you said, I'll settle for a movie.....
too bad so many of the original cast
pjcas18 : 3/8/2018 6:09 pm : link
are now dead. Would have been nice to keep some people around, though I guess by having it a prequel the almost no one would make sense to play themselves anyway.
