NFT: I finally saw the movie Split, Spoiler warning

Jay on the Island : 3/9/2018 11:01 am
Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen it yet. What an excellent movie with another M Night Shyamalan twist thrown at the end.

The sequel to Unbreakable and Split comes out in 2019 and the title is Glass. Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, Samuel L Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy are all returning. In split I see that they refer to Kevin's dad leaving on a train during one of his therapy sessions. Towards the end he leaves flowers at a train station right before he turns into the Beast. I think that Kevin's dad died in the train accident in which David Dunn was the sole survivor in Unbreakable. Did anyone else get this impression?
Sounds like it could

Yes that was revealed at the end of unbreakable. I hope that is not the big twist at the end of Glass as it is too obvious IMO. I assume Mr. Glass will continue to believe his is the archenemy of Dunn who will attempt to pull Kevin and David's strings. Will they introduce more people with super abilities? M Night Shyamalan has a chance to develop an entirely different superhero universe. As of now it appears Glass will be the end of it but if Glass is a big success he might change his mind.
it sets up a very cool battle

good v. evil, social v. antisocial, body v. mind. By that I mean Dunn was born with an unbreakable body; Kevin's mind turned him into what he is.

Interesting set-up in that Dunn uses his power for good while Kevin uses his for evil. Dunn protects; Kevin hurts. If the two are equally powerful and this is a situation of "immovable object meets an unstoppable force," I suppose the tiebreaker is . . . everyone else. Society will back Dunn over Kevin. It could be the difference.

Given Knight's proclivity toward Christian-based themes, I suspect Dunn will win, perhaps at the cost of his own life.
When does Michael Fassbender come in play

with magnetic powers? Oops, wrong franchise.
Since there's a spoiler alert ...

and since I have seen both (Unbreakable is among my favorite non-Mafia movies lol - just love the darkness, the pace, the message) ...

... would someone remind me exactly what the connections were revealed to be between the two stories? I'm old ... and it's been a while. lol And I've never been sick a day in my life, no broken bones ... just saying.
You have to watch the end

Since we are spoiling the film here - the last scene takes place in a diner. A news reporter on the TV is describing the killer and says that b/c of his many personalities they are calling him "the Horde".

A patron at the counter says "that reminds me of when they put this guy away 15 years ago, they gave him a funny name too, what was it" and then Bruce Willis' character from Unbreakable, siting next to her, says "Mr. Glass". Roll credits.
Yeah ...

... just re-viewed it.

Could be pretty cool.
They probably meant to imply
BlackLight : 3/9/2018 1:35 pm : link
that Kevin's father was on train with Dunn, and died in the accident.

Other retroactive bits of connecting the stories. Some are saying that we see young Kevin in Unbreakable, being dragged through the stadium concourse by his overbearing mother, and they brush up against Dunn, who "reads" that the kid might be being abused.
M Night Shyamalan caught a lot of flack for "Unbreakable"

...I think he even said it was his "best picture." Naturally, people said Sixth Sense was. But I really enjoyed the movie, so happy to see a convo on the topic.
The home intrusion scene was a bit over the top, though...

I stayed away from Split since it seemed to dark, but would be pumped if this proved to be a redux of Unbreakable.
"Unbreakable" was good

I even like The Village, both probably moreso than Sixth Sense.

The twist in the Village was incredibly obvious though.

The ending was great

I was waiting and searching for the surprise all the way through and it still fooled me big time.
split was fantastic

from what i recall the guy that Willis kills in unbreakable was supposed to be the beast/horde, but was changed for some reason. Maybe not enough time for his back story.

I don't think I guessed the twist in The Village, watching it the first time. But I'm pretty certain that I went in just looking to enjoy the movie, and not trying to stay ahead of it by guessing the ending. I'm pretty sure that's the reason everyone says they saw it coming. They were looking for a twist, and there's only so many things it could be.
