NFT: Yankees announce first round of cuts

Beer Man : 3/9/2018 4:52 pm
RHP Cale Coshow, RHP Raynel Espinal, LHP Trevor Lane, C Chace Numata, LHP Justus Sheffield and RHP Dillon Tate to minor league camp.

Sheffield was sent down after his rough outing yesterday and his 11.0+ era so far for the Spring,
SYN - ( New Window )
Maybe Sheff wasn't going to make the team...

...even if he walked on water all Spring.

+1. But he did have a terrible Spring showing.
In other baseball news ...

I saw my first highlights of Ohtani. Its too bad the Yank's couldn't sign him. His breaking ball is one of the nastiest I've seen in a long time.
Interesting how tales get told

Sheffield had a few very good innings(his 1st of each appearance) and a few awful ones (his 2nd of each appearance), nothing in between. He had pretty much no chance to make the team and needs better command but the stuff is there.

Here's what Joel Sherman had to say about Ohtani today:

I have now seen Shohei Ohtani pitch and I am sure the 30 teams that so wanted him saw way better than this. Slider was very good but plenty of hangers. Fastball 92-94 not 97-99 and trouble locating #Angels.

The highlights focused on his breaking balls, which looked very sharp.

I watched all three of Sheffield's outings, I thought he struggled with location, not so much walks, but putting the ball where he wanted/needed to. He's is only 21 and I'm sure they will be working hard on it this Summer. Adams has fared a little better, but his location has not been the greatest either.
Just means the locker room is less crowded tomorrow

Nothing earth-shattering in this round of cuts- everyone on the list was a non-roster invitee. Now down to only 16 non-roster guys- and most of them are C and P who are going to the minors in a few days.

Espinoza, Wade LeBlanc, Adam Lind, and Shane Robinson are the guys sweating the cuts. They are likely the only non-roster guys in camp with even a remote chance of having the Yanks make a hard choice on whether to add them to the 40 man roster.

Honestly, I don't think ANY of them make it and they opt out or go to AAA
Dillon Tate was not a surprise either
Beer Man : 3/9/2018 5:53 pm : link
His pitching reminds a little of former yank Phil Hughes. His fastball didn't show any movement and stayed consistent at 94/95 mph. He is going to have to work on mixing things up or MLB hitters will light him up. The Yanks do have him working on a two seam fastball that has some sink to it.
Second round of cuts announced too

Domingo German has been very impressive when Ive watch, though I havent caught many games either.
I love the movement on his fastball. He could be another Chad

Green. They should give him a chance, though our pen is stacked.
I thought Tate looked good in the little I saw him
arniefez : 3/10/2018 12:01 pm : link
I don't get the Phil Hughes comp but what do I know. I bet Tate hopes he comp's the 54 million Hughes has been paid.
Several guys could get ready this year
Phil in LA : 3/10/2018 12:05 pm : link
just not to start. As the vet pitchers need more innings, the young starters have to go to minorl league camp to keep builind up their innings.
