La Canfora says it would be a huge upset if Norwell ended up anywhere other then New York. I know people don't like La Canfora on here, but he's definitely been most accurate writer when it comes to the Giants. At least since Gettleman took over.
If Andrew Norwell, the top offensive lineman on the open market, lands anywhere other than the Giants it will be considered a major upset throughout the industry. He is a player Giants GM Dave Gettleman knows well from their time together in Carolina, and the Giants are desperate to finally actually upgrade their offensive line … |
Why? Beason was an injured player before he got here. Norwell isn't.
San Fran other most likely. Cleveland signed Zeitler last year.
Everyone keeps touting Nelson to them at 4 and now Norwell. They have 2 top flight guards already. Zeitler ans Bitonio
Don't also forget Shohei Otani was once considered an early slam dunk signing with the Yankees.
But Eli's not me.
But Eli's not me.
I'd feel the same, rather another title.
For Norwell??
Cleveland's starting Guards
LG - Joel Bitonio (6-year, $51M contract extension signed in 2017)
RG - Kevin Zeitler (5-year, $60M contract signed in 2017)
Where are they playing Norwell?
They didnt win a single game
They didnt win a single game
A good reason why it is foolish to use the #2 overall pick on a guard.

Then thats not much of an argument for their importance.

They also have a hall of fame left tackle. Is that also not important?
Cleveland has some excellent linemen. That has nothing to do with why they're winless and unsuccessful.
He's a quality player. Zeitler is probably better.

if he needs money to outbid Cleveland for players...

Didnt say Norwell. Just add-libbing to other posts in thread...
Personally I like Gettleman's seemingly no nonsense approach.
The Giants reportedly would have drafted Bitonio if he had fallen to them. Unfortunately he didn't and they took Richburg instead. Bitonio has developed into one of the best guards in football.

He was fired because he wanted to get rid of some of the Owner's favorite guys and there was a difference of opinion. He wasn't universally hated by all his players.
Now you want to add what should amount to the highest paid OG in the league to a line with maybe one or let’s be kind two possible starters available. Does he make the running game special all by himself what about the passing game. This is the kind of moves teams close to championship makes not bottom of the barrel teams.
SYNAPSE!

I think it probably speaks more to the value of a good QB and a competent head coach, don’t you?

Dragon,
Norwell is a 26 year old all pro guard. He will be signed to a long term contract, I can assume 5 years. Locking up 1 of the 5 positions with a known superior player is very important to the proper building of the whole unit. It is also smart to back load the contract so we can sign other pieces, like Fleming who is also 26 years old and should come at a reasonable contract. Jone will be you starting Center. I suggested drafting Will Hernandez in round 2. So, that is 4 of the 5 positions. Flowers and Wheeler will fight it out for LT. Let's say Flowers starts for one more year, here is your line:
Flowers, Norwell, Jones, Hernandez, Fleming. All the players will be in their prime and all are healthy. I'll take this line over last years line
I don't want to be mean, but what the hell does Beason have to do with Norwell? Beason was an oft-injured LB past his prime (after 2-3 years of injuries). Norwell is none of that.
If we had this type of attitude, we would never sign anyone (because some guy from some team was past his prime and didn't work out, we can never sign a player from that team?)

was fired was because the players hated him? Why would one of his ex-players follow him here? I know there has been a lot of talk about the Giants being interested in Norwell but, I can't figure out why he would come here (besides money) if the rumors were true about Gettleman?

Okay ... maybe we have a chance. I heard it different but, it was right after he got fired and people were surprised because just 2 seasons earlier they were in the SB. But, the reports that I heard might have been inaccurate and pre-mature.
Either way - I like his style. Seems like an old school disciplinarian (ala Tom Coughlin).
Why did Shawn OHara, Kareem McKenzie, Antonio Pierce and Plaxico Burress sign here? It is probably a combo of $, fit, $ and connection with coaches. The Giants have a good rep on treating players well. New facilities, newer stadium, NY City really offers players opportunities.
Ok, so provide us with a list of the teams we never had an unsucceful trade with or free agent signing and then we can see what is left.
Patient: Doc, what's the prognosis?
Doc: You will live.
Patient: That's great news!
Doc: Oh. Uh, sorry. Meant, you will NOT live. Eh, I forgot one word ...
I hear this argument frequently, yet players sign contracts with shitty teams all the time.
