GBN Draft Report (March 11th) Draft Thoughts...

M.S. : 3/12/2018 11:59 am
...interesting read from our friend, Colin, who speculates that with Cleveland and Giants going QB one-two, the natural trading partner for Buffalo is Indy at #3.

Lot's to read here... a very well reasoned column.

with his assessment that the Browns are still in the QB drafting first scenario despite what the fans want. This isn't fantasy football and all of these QB's are not equal. The cleanest and most pro ready QB of the top 4 is Sam Darnold without question. Rosen has injury/character issues, Allen is too raw and has accuracy issues, Mayfield is short and has character issues. The cleanest is Darnold. They haven't had a franchise starter since the 80's so they can NOT afford to be cute with the QB position and wait to see who they get at 4.

After that I disagree with his assessment of Barkley dropping to 4. He will NOT drop to 4. I strongly feel if he is there the Giants will pounce or trade back. In that case the Colts will absolutely NOT pass up the opportunity to draft Barkley.

If I'm the Browns though I can live without Barkley. Barry Sanders did nothing for the Lions who never had a QB his whole career there. Additionaly, Dorsey has NEVER drafted a RB in the first round and he has proven he can find RB's later in the draft like he did with Kareem Hunt. This is a deep RB class. He can find one later and still have his QB. You can win without a star RB but it is exponentially harder to win without a solid QB.

A draft of Darnold, Chubb/Fitzpatrick and Guice is an excellent draft for the Browns.
The "character" issues

on Rosen are fabricated. It's fair to ding him on health, but giving thoughtful interviews and having educated opinions is not a character issue.
I agree

in that it would really, really dumb for Browns to pass on QB at 1.

However, if they go Darnold at 1, I think Giants would pass on the other QBs and take Barkley. If Darnold is there, however, then we might have a discussion.
Cleveland is targeting Josh Allen
Coach Red Beaulieu : 3/12/2018 12:37 pm : link
The bizarre trade and giving away a good pick for Taylor only makes sense if Cleveland is going to build an offense around a mobile QB, who can and needs to sit and learn on the bench for a year.

Or its just Cleveland done goof again.

It is if you're in NY. You can't be too opinionated. I can see that getting him into trouble. Imagine him getting into a twitter feud with Trump as he's facing a big game. No thanks.

That aside the character issues are referring to his always seeming to divide a room. You love him or hate him. That kind of attitude won't work well in an NFL locker room. Then you have numerous scouts all saying the big knock on him outside of injuries are the off the field stuff and his lack of maturity. They all can't be wrong.

That aside, his concussion history is enough for me to pass.

There have been people who have said in confidence on SIRIUS NFL radio that a source inside the Browns say they are absolutely going to take Allen 1.

Allen has a big arm but he can't hit anything. Can that be fixed? history says no.

Now if the Browns go Allen and the Giants are staring at Darnold or Barkley then I'd love to hear that war room discussion.

I don't know what scouting reports you've read, but the off the field concerns are mainly being driven by the Media. Our own scout, Sy, has even said there are no off the field concerns with Rosen.

I don't disagree that NY may not be the right spot for someone who has opinions, but Rosen appears to be a smart guy. I'd bet he could adjust to this market.

Exactly. And being very intelligent also should be an asset, not a knock. It's amazing how these narratives get started and take on a life on their own. Most of the information I've read indicates Rosen is the most pro-ready of the bunch and Darnold may have a little higher upside.

Again, being opinionated is not a character issue.

That wasn't an analogy but an example of what could happen. And knowing how opinionated he is do you really think thats far fetched?

But yeah EVERYONE is wrong about Rosen and his off the field stuff. Trent Dilfer in giving him a compliment said that half the people will love him and half will hate him. Charley Casserly said that of all of the QB prospects he has 2 pages worth of issues involving Josh Rosen that is off the field type of stuff. Teams having to question his commitment to the game, to have to question his ability to be coached. To the hot tub incident in his dorm room and questions about his maturity. ALL of that is just made up media hype. Thats why Rosen has had to devote time to prove to teams that 1). his heart is in it and 2). that he has matured.

Obviously I don't know Josh Rosen and all of that stuff could be misunderstandings or just immature things that did occur but that he has grown and learned from. All I know is this, they are enough that he and his team have had take time to dispel those accusations. That fact, along with his concussion history and immobility, are enough for me to want to pass on him. Because after all he might be playing nice now but once he gets a contract then is he gonna be running his mouth again and be overtly opinionated than what you want out of your QB? Not to say that any young man doesn't have the right, but that is not something I need from the QB position. No thanks.

You have it backwards. The Lions never did anything for Barry Sanders.

Really? Try telling people you voted for the President at your next NYC social gathering. I'm not sure "accepted" is what you'd feel. :)

In Dave Te's quarterback podcast, he cations that Rosen is a huge issue with respect to the locker room.

Hey look they tried. But Barry Sanders made them good enough to just have middle round picks...maybe 5-11 is the worst they got a couple of times. They drafted Rodney Peete. Didn't work out. They signed a high priced QB one offseason, didn't work out. They brought in several different QBs that never worked.

And thats the point. They had the generational RB who was good enough to make them mediocre because they didn't have a QB. Which is why you grab the QB when you can get him and try to grab a good RB later. This draft is deep at RB. For a team who hasn't had a QB since the 80's they can't afford to fool around with the position and the GM has shown he can find RB's later in the draft.

Have you checked the turnover rate of Darnold? Not exactly the cleanest prospect in the draft. I would pass on him.
