For those using Brees at 39 as an example.....

of why not to draft a star franchise QB.

The Saints are looking for Brees replacement.

They are very interested in Mayfield. They've had several long talks with him. Met him several times at the Combine , seeing if he can learn the west coast offense.

Brees himself has said he is at the end of his career. He's 39 , the Saints want Brees to groom his replacement before he retires.

New Orleans has a HOF QB , and is still planning for there future , why not us?

Something to think about with Eli Manning.

Saints draft at 27

Mayfield probably goes top 10. That's a hella distance to move to get a "franchise" QB.
So same should be said for the Steelers and the chargers

I can see the argument.....but Eli is two years younger and NO will be resigning Brees....not replacing him in the short term

Yeah I think there willing to trade up to get him , if he falls far enough.

I think the chiefs did something similar a few years ago right? am I wrong?

No I believe the Saints want to do both. They want to resign Brees for a few years , and then during that time get the replacement , and have him groom him. They want both
Saints fans may

have to go back to wearing those bags on their heads like the NYG fans to get close enough to replace Brees.

(albeit a long time ago) and missed a full season.

The Giants need a plan in place for Eli's eventual replacement. That doesn't necessarily have to involve drafting a QB in the first round in 2018.
just keep beating the same

Wanting Mayfield and getting Mayfield are not the same
George from PA : 3/12/2018 10:47 pm : link
Signing Brees.....for 2 years will not be happening either.....as someone will pay 3 if not 4 years.

So, I am not sure what your is the point?

Get the QB at 2.....I suspect the Giants will do their due diligence.....Darnold, Rosen or Allen...not sure Mayfield is in consideration but all will be looked over.

Barkley will also be an option

As well as one or two trade downs
The problem with grooming QBs

These days is you lose years of by far the biggest advantage of playing them with their dirt cheap salary.

The Seahawks are tearing their team apart now. Then look at the Rams who are building a great team. They have a small window to go all in to win until Donald, Gurley and Goff eat up a 3rd of their cap space, and their team fades into mediocrity.

This is the reality of the NFL today. A shit load of top heavy teams that have zero depth because salaries have sky rocketed, regardless of the cap increases.

I keep hearing people say well just keep Eli for 2 more years then let Webb take over. Webb would be on the last year of his rookie contract at that point. So what if he has a mediocre Blake Bortles like season and commands $30M a season?

Eli might be two years young but has been playing like he's 2 year's older
Well, the Saints have a HoF QB...

Brees back to NO

Eli when protected has played by well
George from PA : 3/13/2018 3:34 am : link
He needs an OL....that creates holes in the running game, so play action works and allows Eli a little time in the pocket

Why reese is no longer here

Brees signing for 2 years for 48 million seems like a no brainer.

Gettleman completely contradicts you when he says that teams are keeping their best players, who never reach the open market .
