He can play both guard spots and RT. He is a very good young offensive linemen who gets the most of his ability. He is not the most talented offensive lineman but he is a hard worker who plays well.
Giants current starting OL from left to right: Ereck Flowers, John Jerry, Brett Jones, Jon Halapio, Chad Wheeler. John Greco and Adam Bisnowaty options too.

we barely have those on the roster right now. We actually need a lot more JAG types who have proven NFL value. This isn't exciting but it's the nasty medicine we need.
reaching again. He is the Steelers BACKUP OL the last 2 years. and we are gonna pay him as a starter.
The Browns had a terrible offensive line and Shaun O'Hara was just a backup there. When he has played Hubbard has been very solid for Pittsburgh. The truth is he would be an upgrade at both guard and RT for the Giants. The versatility just adds to his value.
We need linemen and so call it what you will, but we have to do something to put a line together. IMO, there will be 2 high draft picks used on the Oline. We have to do a better job in the draft. That's Reese's biggest failure.

I call it Dumpster Diving for OL help. I've been calling it that for 6 years now. Some things never change.

Spending a top 10 pick on an OT and another on guard plus a 2nd round pick on Richburg is dumpster diving? Sure they picked the wrong players but that isn't dumpster diving.
I was reading that Hubbard is a flexible player who can play all (5) OL positions. He is ,however, a smaller player.
He is definitely not a "Hog Mollie", at 295# he is more of a finesse blocker and works best in a zone blocking scheme.
He does not seem like the type of player the Giants are looking for. Norwell was the type of player that they were seeking.
Not certain who fits the mold that they are seeking.
I have a feeling that the line rebuild will take a couple of years, and the players will come from the draft.

Yeah, he's undersized as a tackle. His body is probably more suited to guard.

I don't think Gettleman is talking about a guys size when he says hog mollie. I think its more of a general term for OL who can flat out play regardless of their size. Hubbard had some nasty blocks in the running game for Pitt last year.

These are exactly the types of players the Giants need right now. He may not be the biggest or strongest, but he is effective. With the disaster the line is in now and guys that are already projects (Flowers, Fluker, Wheeler). We need EFFECTIVE football players. Forget the measurements. Guys who can get the job done who we don't have to break the bank for.
as mentioned, O'Hara was exactly that type of player. Ron Stone was a backup in Dallas. David Diehl was not considered a "blue goose" LT and it had been said that you cannot win a SB with David Diehl as your starting LT.
You have to find guys who can come over cheaply, which means you are not signing prime free agents. There is talent out there but I think a lot of BBI will be disappointed at the names that come out. It reminds me a lot of how some people complained about Antonio Pierce when he was signed. Guys like Pierce and O'Hara win you SB's.
I'm excited to have Gettleman in charge of our FA. I feel like he did very well for us when he was in charge of Pro Personnel back in the day. With Abrams at his side I'm confident the numbers will work out.
I like gettleman also. And believe we should wait and see and Â
And that they will do stuff good for the team.fun stuff. And sensible stuff.
.But I'm also a bit surprised how many fans here are stepping in here to justify Hubbard. I mean, is that our job? To make every move seem like it's a great move?
This. With limited cap and many holes to plug, this should at least help the transition to a solid team. It's going to take another 1 or 2 years though. And patience.
14 mil per, that would be 60 million for the OL alone! All kidding aside, spotting under utilized talent and "building" a team is the way to go. DG has been good at it, and Reese was awful at it for a very long time. This guy is exactly the type of guy to zone in on. Has been a backup and when given the chance played well and is now a cap casualty. A couple of these types, get better play out of Flowers, draft 1 or 2 guys that can step in and you have a decent OL.

That's how I interpreted it as well. Somehow people took it to mean big even for a big guy, but I think what DG was getting at is simply that the game is won and lost in the trenches and you need quality linemen in general.

For JR that was by choice; this is out of necessity because JR blew ops in the draft.

And since as fans we only know names we are not giving DG his due. Did anyone know Norwell before DG since him in Carolina? I bet not. The guys he signs will probably not be household names. Let's try to be patient.
But here's to wishful thinking.

They are too close to the cap to keep him. He would be a reserve again with the return of Gilbert.

So plan C...

woof
It sucks missing out on Norwell, but one player was never going to fix this OL, and there is no doubt Gettleman is well aware of that.
Steelers opted to go back to Gilbert and let Hubbard walk. This would be a quality, low cost signing.
How would it be a waste he played well last year and we have no one
Makes sense. Not.
This board two years ago had Richburg headed for Canton

So depends on $$$$
True, even at LB & RB.
