Breer: NYG in on Solder

Another team in on Patriots OT Nate Solder: The New York Giants. After losing out on Andrew Norwell, their search for offensive line help continues. Pats will have a battle to hold on to Tom Brady's left tackle.

I would been fine paying Norwell what JAX paid him
Knee of Theismann : 3/13/2018 7:55 pm : link
Instead we're going to end up paying Pugh and Solder a combined $25M/year to be mediocre. How can you argue a little extra dough isn't worth all-pro play vs. mediocre/sub-par play? I don't care guard vs. tackle, o-line is o-line in today's NFL with all the different blitz schemes Defenses come up with these days.
I agree
big canoe jeff : 3/13/2018 7:55 pm : link
But the Giants need to do it this year only
Then we should be in a good$$$ situation DG needs to be firm don’t kick the can down the road so we are in perpetual cap hell like forever under reese

Pugh will sign elsewhere
I think this proves
Knee of Theismann : 3/13/2018 7:58 pm : link
That David Diehl is like essentially the reason we won 2 super bowls. We got insanely lucky getting a guy in the 7th round who wasn't even a left tackle and he ended up filling that role reliably well for half a decade.

went to Vikes, did fairly well there.
Didn't hatch have a back?

?
geez went back looking at OL draftees
bc4life : 3/13/2018 8:25 pm : link
Snee in 2004 then ...Mitch Petrus, James Brewer, Adam Koets, and several years we didn't draft any OL.
No he didn't have a back
bc4life : 3/13/2018 8:27 pm : link
but he had a sharp legal mind - remember when he didn't want to participate in rookie camp without a contract due to fear of injury?

James Brewer, another Ereck Flowers. Except Flowers actually plays with some aggression and power.

when we drafted Petitgout in the 1st. I was crushed the year we just missed out on Ogden and got Cedric Jones.

I’d be really surprised if we don’t take at least one OL in Rounds 2 and 3.
Checked it

Hatch injured his back early in his rookie year. Possibly had tweaked it pre draft even.

I would too. Building the OL through the draft will take a couple a couple of years but you need to start with this draft.
Seems like they went through a period
idiotsavant : 3/13/2018 8:55 pm : link
Where they wanted the line to 'look professional' ( I.E. not fat wide droopy pants).

Which is very silly of course. Get great football players. Wide is fine.
also took shawn williams

30 is not old for an OLineman.......
Simms11 : 3/13/2018 9:10 pm : link
they can play into their mid 30s in most cases. He’s an average LT, but he could add some stability to the position for a few years.

1000% agree , especially if your planning to draft a franchise QB for the future

Also this moves Flowers to guard or RT which could be a second huge addition to the line

Not sold on overpaying for Solder....by the time this team is ready to really compete for a SB, he will be too old....

We need building blocks to start with, not blocks that will need to be replaced in a season or two...

This team will make moves that make you scratch your head, like re-signing Herz and cutting DRC......I feel Gettleman is trying to go middle of the road instead of a full rebuild...

So be it....so long as the end justifies the means......

Bingo, he’s nowhere near as good as the money he’s going to get for a 30 year old. Hard pass on Solder
I wonder if they are in part driving Solder price up to get Flemming

The guy to sign was Norwell - could have gotten another 10 years out of him. Solder has already played the best he will ever play. At 30, he's not the guy to be signing. Reminds me of the same backward ass thinking when Reese cut ties with 24 year-old, SB champion, emerging star Linvale Joseph, and opted to go with older, less talented, and useless vets like Jenkins and Patterson.
do you people even understand how free agency works?

funny how last year everyone wanted Whitworth who was five years older.. now we dont want a younger player who has played on a championship team ??

this place just loses its mind on the offseason..

What's really FUNNY is that you are comparing Solder, who has made ZERO Pro Bowls in 7 years to Whitworth who has been 1st Team All Pro and made 5 Pro Bowls. Comparing an apple to a quashed orange, but if you think you must...

sorry but pro bowls dont really mean much to me..

here is the reality.. there isnt much talent in free agency. Solder like it or not is the best tackle out there. The Giants made an offer to Norwell. he chose another team. Thats how it works.. Just like you can chose another place of employment.. so can they.. fans just dont seem to able to deal with the fact that someone didnt chose THEIR team..

Pro Bowls don;t mean much is easy to say when a guy blocking for Tom Brady has not made 1 in 7 years. Just because you do not get your guy Norwell means that you turn around and overpay for a less productive, older, and inferior player. What fans get - and apparently you do not - is that you do not take a FA snub and compound the issue by trying to make up for it. See decision to pass on 24 year old Linvale Joseph and knee-jerk older, less talented Mike Patterson and Cullen Jenkins

Go watch the tape of the Superbowl. Solder is solid. Not great but solid. If say he's between the 8th and 12th best left tackle in football. On a four year deal that expires at his age 33 is all good

Dave G couldn’t get the top head coach he wanted or top tier free agents he wanted/needed for the OL... facts. Didn’t like the Dave G hire and that’s not going to change until he makes some good moves.. haven’t seen any yet. It’s a shame how such a poor OL a year ago looks to only be getting worse now...

I'm not saying he's bad - just not worth the $15M/year he may command. if there was no cap - sure, but are you saying you would give him a 4yr/$56M-$60M deal? I would not go there at all.

jtgiants : 3/14/2018 2:20 am : link
I'm saying he's a top 8 to 12 LT. That's a major upgrade from flowers. Unfortunately that's the going rate. He'll help
Vette, certainly entitled to your opinion but
George from PA : 3/14/2018 6:03 am : link
Solder's market value IS what he is worth. If someone is willing to pay him.

Now, if you feel that it is a mistaken in judgement by he team, maybe.

Desperate times leads to desperate measures.

The Giants have Wheeler as our only LT prospect.

Solder might cause a domino effect across entire OL. Solder solidifies LT,which allows others to go to better fitting positions. Win/win
Who cares about the money?
Big Rick in FL : 3/14/2018 6:09 am : link
It's not yours. There are always ways to make cap space. The Eagles were 9 million over the cap and have signed 2 free agents so far plus traded for Michael Bennett.
Down To Giants & Texans
pa_giant_fan : 3/14/2018 7:11 am : link
Per Ian Rapoport. Which means he'll go back to NE
Solder at LT & moving Flowers to guard..
Sean : 3/14/2018 7:18 am : link
hopefully could really improve this line.
Going forward
AdamBrag : 3/14/2018 7:31 am : link
Solder is likely a slightly below average left tackle. That's a huge upgrade for us, no doubt, but paying him as the top left tackle in football will make it really tight on our cap space. Signing Solder could be similar to when we signed JPP last year.
