Another team in on Patriots OT Nate Solder: The New York Giants. After losing out on Andrew Norwell, their search for offensive line help continues. Pats will have a battle to hold on to Tom Brady's left tackle.

how many clowns here on BBI said pass on whitworth too? he was the BEST pass protecting LT in football last year...
i guess we missed the boat on that one huh? we have an aging QB if you want to be AT ALL competitive, it starts with the OL. sign solder who still has 3-5 left in him and draft a OG in either nelson or one of the round 2 guys....

sorry but you guys are crazy if you dont think this would be a massive upgrade to our OL

Solder has never been as good as whitworth.
Plus value
idiotsavant : 3/13/2018 5:35 pm : link
Is that he has been well coached on the line. That must be contagious. Help bring cohesion up front, explain stuff to newbs.

Also. Appears to dovetail with the draft - in its supply of guards.

Whitworth was 5 or 6 years older. Good for him that he’s still playing at a high level at his age but the Giants didn’t want to take the risk, atleast it made sense.

jon, it doesnt matter....people wanted to pass on whitworth because of age and cost....exactly why people are complaining about solder...

the 8th-12th best LT in the league. Flowers is somewhere in the upper 20's or 30's. Huge upgrade. We are seeing LT's play well into their 30's (Peters, Whitworth, Thomas).

At the very worst, we get a solid LT who we can trust to protect Eli or our young QB's blindside and a definite upgrade at probably the 2nd most important position on offense. I'd be willing to pay 12 or 13mil for him. Anything more than that is no bueno.

Update on Solder
Breeze_94 : 3/13/2018 5:42 pm : link
Tom Curran (NBCSN Boston) said on Periscope that Solder will not be taking any visits yet and would like to stay in New England, market is probably 12-13mil a year.
The Giants need a OT
David B. : 3/13/2018 5:42 pm : link
More than they needed a OG. Solder isn't Ogden or Pace, but he is solid, and would certainly be an upgrade over what the Giants have had.
I don’t think he is leaving the Pats. Only if Bill B low balls him.
Ivan15 : 3/13/2018 5:45 pm : link
He will give a big discount to stay with the Patriots.
He's at BEST
Dave on the UWS : 3/13/2018 5:45 pm : link
barely adequate. Would he be an upgrade? Yes but at what cost? Eli's blind side would still be a weak point. I don't trust the beat writers. I think most of this is speculation. I would expect this to be DG doing his due diligence.
I absolutely understand
Emil : 3/13/2018 5:47 pm : link
those who are not pleased with how things are going today, but signing a quality starting LT is an absolute must. Even more so than an all-pro OG in Norwell.

The problem with the Giants roster is the product of years of horrendous drafting. As a result, the Giants are not going to be able to FA their way out of this. The hole is too deep. What they can do is use their money wisely to fill critical holes. A start LT is one, a reliable veteran RB is another, another legit NFL caliber WR is one more. No doubt fixing the roster is going to be a long process, but if the Giants have a middle of the road OL next year, a Flanker (X WR) to work opposite OBJ, and an above average ground game, there is no reason why the team can't improve to at least 500. I know, big deal, but you have to start somewhere. The organization needs to get the culture of winning back.

I was one of the earliest proponents of signing Whitworth as early as November '16. Many posters deserve to be called out for being a proponent of Solder, but being against Whitworth. Whitworth is a prototypical LT. Solder will likely sign a similiar deal whether it is here or elsewhere. If he signs here, there will be many that will herald it as great signing. But a year ago, Whitworth wasn't worth the money. Bunch of hypocrites ...

if the price is right, but I don't see him leaving NE.

But he is an upgrade, still hopefully has a few good years left, and he is a true Left Tackle on a roster that doesn't have that guy on it right now. At the very least, he is a solid option who buys us time to groom a young Left Tackle from this years draft class or next years (more realistic).

The LT problem is the hardest to solve. We need to work with Wheeler and any draftees to think about a back up LT and the future.

We can get guards and maybe even RT more easily.

See if Flowers can play anything OK.

but this guy has the pedigree, proven he can preform at the highest levels and has shown some durability.

locking him up for 13 + mill over the next 3-4 years is money well spent imo. if you also consider our need at T, the lack of options in FA and the draft's depth at guard; this becomes more and more attractive.

Get it done, DG.

Happens every year. If we don’t sign the equivalent of LT in his prime within the first 3 minutes of free agency, this place becomes Arkham Asylum.

Thankfully we didn't get Norwell. too many holes to fill to spend on one OG.

because wisdom from 15 years ago says guards shouldn't make a lot of money but throw money at a 30 year old tackle with injury and concussion concerns who doesn't really want to play anywhere other than NE. Good talk.

overpaying is built into free agency. the questions is how mush do you have to overpay. IMO, he'll be able to get more elsewhere.

His little one has some health issues, so, that will probably be foremost in his thought process (e.g., access to best treatment)

how many clowns here on BBI said pass on whitworth too? he was the BEST pass protecting LT in football last year...
i guess we missed the boat on that one huh? we have an aging QB if you want to be AT ALL competitive, it starts with the OL. sign solder who still has 3-5 left in him and draft a OG in either nelson or one of the round 2 guys....

sorry but you guys are crazy if you dont think this would be a massive upgrade to our OL

+100

are you insane, Whitworth was all pro in 2015 and 2017. Now, his age was an issue and I can understand passing on him, but to equate Nate Solder to Whitworth is probably the dumbest thing I have read today and I have read a lot of dumb things today.

Easy killers. No where in that comment did he say Solder was Whitworth. What hes saying is that if you pass on the only guy avqilqble youre flipping retarded. Its not about Whitworth vs Solder, its about Flowers vs Solder lol. Comeon guys make a wee bit of sense huh?

Are you a Jet's fan? You don't have to like him but I root for the G-Men and have for 40+ years. If you have an issue with him then go follow someone else.

Instead we're going to end up paying Pugh and Solder a combined $25M/year to be mediocre. How can you argue a little extra dough isn't worth all-pro play vs. mediocre/sub-par play? I don't care guard vs. tackle, o-line is o-line in today's NFL with all the different blitz schemes Defenses come up with these days.

Not sold on overpaying for Solder....by the time this team is ready to really compete for a SB, he will be too old....

We need building blocks to start with, not blocks that will need to be replaced in a season or two...

This team will make moves that make you scratch your head, like re-signing Herz and cutting DRC......I feel Gettleman is trying to go middle of the road instead of a full rebuild...

So be it....so long as the end justifies the means......

The guy to sign was Norwell - could have gotten another 10 years out of him. Solder has already played the best he will ever play. At 30, he's not the guy to be signing. Reminds me of the same backward ass thinking when Reese cut ties with 24 year-old, SB champion, emerging star Linvale Joseph, and opted to go with older, less talented, and useless vets like Jenkins and Patterson.

sorry but pro bowls dont really mean much to me..

here is the reality.. there isnt much talent in free agency. Solder like it or not is the best tackle out there. The Giants made an offer to Norwell. he chose another team. Thats how it works.. Just like you can chose another place of employment.. so can they.. fans just dont seem to able to deal with the fact that someone didnt chose THEIR team..

Pro Bowls don;t mean much is easy to say when a guy blocking for Tom Brady has not made 1 in 7 years. Just because you do not get your guy Norwell means that you turn around and overpay for a less productive, older, and inferior player. What fans get - and apparently you do not - is that you do not take a FA snub and compound the issue by trying to make up for it. See decision to pass on 24 year old Linvale Joseph and knee-jerk older, less talented Mike Patterson and Cullen Jenkins

I'm not saying he's bad - just not worth the $15M/year he may command. if there was no cap - sure, but are you saying you would give him a 4yr/$56M-$60M deal? I would not go there at all.

Vette, certainly entitled to your opinion but
George from PA : 3/14/2018 6:03 am : link
Solder's market value IS what he is worth. If someone is willing to pay him.

Now, if you feel that it is a mistaken in judgement by he team, maybe.

Desperate times leads to desperate measures.

The Giants have Wheeler as our only LT prospect.

Solder might cause a domino effect across entire OL. Solder solidifies LT,which allows others to go to better fitting positions. Win/win
Who cares about the money?
Big Rick in FL : 3/14/2018 6:09 am : link
It's not yours. There are always ways to make cap space. The Eagles were 9 million over the cap and have signed 2 free agents so far plus traded for Michael Bennett.

AdamBrag : 3/14/2018 7:31 am : link
Solder is likely a slightly below average left tackle. That's a huge upgrade for us, no doubt, but paying him as the top left tackle in football will make it really tight on our cap space. Signing Solder could be similar to when we signed JPP last year.
