Who on this roster would start for Philly?

FStubbs : 3/13/2018 7:36 pm
Looking at last year's roster, who would start for the Eagles? Absolutely start - as in the Eagles would trade their guy at that spot for the Giants' guy without question.

I honestly think Beckham is the only guy who would.

Eli wouldn't start over Wentz. I love El, but at this point, he simply would not.
None of our offensive linemen would.
Sterling Shepard isn't getting into the slot over Nelson Agholor.
Evan Engram isn't starting over Zach Ertz.

If I look over at the defense ...

Are JPP and Vernon really any better than Graham and Curry at this point? Even if I say Snacks and Fletcher Cox are even, and while Snacks is good that's a huge if, Tim Jernigan probably still has the edge on Tomlinson, though Tomlinson was a rookie and one of the few bright spots on this team.

Our linebackers? ROTFL. They might be the worst unit in the league. The Eagles have nothing special at linebacker but each of theirs would have been the best linebacker on the 2017 Giants.

Cornerbacks? Jackrabbit would start for the Eagles. I'm not entirely sure DRC would have started over their younger corners.

Safeties: Landon Collins would have to move to free safety (where I'd think he'd be weak) to get into the starting lineup on the Eagles, because they've got Malcolm Jenkins. None of our other safeties would start for the Eagles.

Total: We have only one guy who absolutely would start for the Eagles in Beckham. 3 other guys who MIGHT - one of whom is no longer on the roster, and another guy who might if he changed position.

This team can turn it all around in one offseason?
EDIT.

2 guys who absolutely would start and 2 other guys who might.

fact that the NFL Champions - who have a very talented team set to be good for a while - reside in the NFC East is a significant factor in how the Giants should approach their personnel issues in my opinion.

But that's a sore subject around here.

This actually hasn't been true for most of the decade...but for some reason the Eagles did own us. But they would struggle with most everyone else.

However, they are now ahead of us.

My position is it's clearly a rebuilding year. You compete with young fresh players, and who knows what can happen, but abandon the idea of a "quick fix". It's unimportant if we get the Norwells and Solders of the league. In fact, it's probably better in the long run that we do not.

I actually agree with this. I think this roster was rotten even in 2011 and we won a Superbowl thanks to one of the closest things the NFL will ever see to a one man team. It's still ludicrous Eli wasn't NFL MVP that year.

It’s crazy how Jim Fassel

Come on man. If the Giants and Iggles trades straight up TEs this place would (rightly) explode. But yeah, you’re correct that the Super Bowl winning Iggle (puke) are better than our 3-13 squad.

If I’m an Eagle fan, then you’re a quality poster.
Don't see this as a particularly insightful question
BillT : 3/13/2018 8:15 pm : link
However, OBJ, Engram, Shepard are equal talents to what they have in those positions on offense. Tomlinson and Snacks are on par with their DTs. Vernon is as good as any of their DEs, Jackrabbit and Collins as good or better than their counterparts on the Eagles. Ogletree is on par with what the Eagles have at LB. That enough? Ellison and JPP would get playing time as well. Maybe a 2nd year Gallman as well.
That’s a good one

Amazing since none of our starters can start for them..

I find it mildly amusing that some brain dead posters here think I’m an Eagle fan. I guess when you post spot on facts about how a rival is better that automatically qualifies one as a fan of that team. Interesting reasoning, but then again I wouldn’t ever really quantify many here on bbi as intellectual heavyweights.

Maybe it’s because you only ever talk about the Eagles and never pop up on threads about the Skins or Boys. I guess since you are so intellectually superior to everyone else here, we should just be glad that you grace us with your presence. You are right, BBI is a much better place with the value you add.

Bullshit.
I post plenty on Dallas and, when it is warranted, the Redskins as well. You just see what you want to see.

You forgot the blocked punt. We hit the special teams trifecta the last time we played them.

This is a year to year league and it wasn't more than two years ago the Eagles were trying to recover from the hell Chip Kelly left. Now they're SB Champs.

We have plenty of talent on the Giants and I don't think the gap is that far apart or will take years to catch up or be right back in the hunt. As evidenced by as you have pointed out, how close the last two games vs them were.
It depends on whether you measure the talent
Dave on the UWS : 3/13/2018 9:07 pm : link
From 2016 or 2017. We have more talent I honestly believe but the coaching was SO bad and our schemes so poor there was massive under performing everywhere (I'm not even talking about the injuries)

The biggest difference in the rosters are largely at LB and the OL. And they make a MASSIVE difference. The QBs are going in Different directions also and that is huge. If DG puts together a representative group at OL and LB then, QB aside the rosters won't look so lopsided in the Eagles favor.
at this very moment it's not close....
BillKo : 3/13/2018 9:57 pm : link
...but the Eagles are going to have to pay Wentz in the next two years, provided he is healthy.

With the skyrocketing prices, that's going to hurt them severely in maintaining their roster.

And there's injuries, circumstance, and the bounce of that ball.....

Let's see how it goes. As Parcells said, I'm not ready to drape the place in black.

We have a new regime, let's see where it leads.

To me, the biggest difference between the two teams - was simply scheme.

The Eagles made it look easy to get players open in space.

McAdoo couldn't free up guys if it was 11 on 7........

Or how that bumbling idiot even got the team to a Super Bowl. Outside of Ben McAgoof, he is my all time wtf giants HC hire. He also fired Payton as play caller one time.

I don't think they can, or have to, turn it

around in one offseason. I agree with Eric, they need to plan around what other divisional teams do well, but that isn't going to happen in one offseason. Make enough improvements to be in contention for a WC. And hey, you never know, Philly could run into some bad luck.
As for who could start on Philly,
Section331 : 3/14/2018 9:42 am : link
Odell definitely; almost certainly Engram; Jackrabbit, if his head is on straight; and I would throw in Ogletree. Tim Jernigan is a hell of a player, but come on, Snacks is better.
Philly's roster is good
Essex : 3/14/2018 9:51 am : link
but let's not forget that the key to their success last year was outscheming teams. They had a very inventive playbook that a lot of teams had struggled with. All the credit should go to Doug Pederson and staff and that is why his entire offensive staff was poached. They will be working hard to keep teams off balanced in the off year and teams will be working hard to stop them in the off year, we will see what wins out. I would not be surprised if Philly repeats of if Philly goes 7-9 or 8-8 as I don't think it is their roster that is behind their success. As an aside, people on here were making fun of Pederson as a dope, how did that work out for us.
Based on the biases..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/14/2018 9:53 am : link
many people have coming off a 3-13 season, you put the Giants up against anyone and they will come up short.

Mainly because people will say not a single OL guy deserves to start. Not a single RB. No LB, and they will probably find a way to make JPP and Vernon out to be complete dogshit and have Eli better than only the unknown signal caller in Arizona.....
