Gettleman's reputation as a tough GM

Hammer : 3/14/2018 7:29 am
Does anyone think that Gettlemen's reputation as tough, no-nonsense GM is going to play into individual player's thinking in regard to signing with the Giants?

Or is it all about the money?

I kinda think its the later. But...

Don't you remember when they said no FAs would come to the Giants when Coughlin was hired and had a rep as a "tough" coach?

Yes. I do. Good point.
It's always about the money. Especially when they say it isn't.

No because the interaction usually occurs only twice - on the way

article it pretty much says why Gettleman was fired.

He didn't give extensions to Olsen who was 30 at the time and Davis who was 32. He was looking at potential trades. He was looking at impact if they were released AND he was weighing those options vs. resigning them.

When he let steve Smith go, he had Richardson's blessing. Same with DeAngelo Williams. When he let Norman go, he pretty much had everyone's blessing, to the point some thought Cam Newton orchestrated the move.

But he took on richardson's sacred cows in Olsen and Davis. Two great players and great off the field figures. Richardson demanded that Gettleman keep those players in Carolina no matter what and Gettleman told him that wasn't doing his job right to which richardson told him he didn't have a job at all.

This isn't about pissing off players - every GM does that. You think ex-Giants loved Reese?

from the mid 2000s teams say on twitter, they all pretty much back Gettleman and bash Reese.
Yeah, Stewart following him from CAR

undercuts this notion quite a bit.

Said he'd go to the team where God told him to...and he conveniently went to Green Bay who happened to be the highest bidder? Clearly, God could count. Or Reggie was full of crap.

likes his "Hog Mollies," they sort of lost all objectivity. They were like not only does he prioritize an offensive line he has this corny nickname that he puts to it. Forgetting such facts as every GM likes investing in the OL, even Reese. After all, Reese invested plenty of assets in an OL he just did so poorly--Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Schwartz, Baas, and I can go on and on. Gettleman's success or failure will not be because he likes "Hog Mollies," it will be because he knows how to pick them--and that we will only know in a couple of years. When a poster uses the term "Hog Molly" as sort of a Gettleman positive, I know everything I need to know about such a poster.
I don't think players really care who the GM is.

Maybe if, as apparently with De'Angelo Williams, they had a poor relationship in the past, they might hesitate to sign with him, but otherwise, I doubt it matters a bit. It's about money and opportunity. Players aren't drooling to sign with a 3-13 team.
Another question
Fred in Atlanta : 3/14/2018 11:11 am : link
would you want to sign a player that is turn off by toughness of GM or Coach?
The players aren’t dealing with the GMs during FA

Their agents are and all the agent cares about is $$.
